They could have easily sold him against Mowbray's wishes. His price must have gone up anyway.

Missed that. Apparently (according to the Athletic) it isn't much of a surprise locally.

Read on Sunderland message boards after the Newcastle tie in FA Cup to see their reaction and many wanted Mowbray gone.

Once more a demonstration that many fans think they are entitled to be top of the league, and have very short memories regarding their own clubs 20 year + trajectory… one that Mowbray had checked and started to reverse. Some clubs are beyond help, their own over inflated self importance is their major downfall.

Lot of time for Mowbray, always comes across well. Will be back in work soon I’d imagine. I’d say Sunderland are running about par but clearly have loftier ambitions. Sometimes can come back to bite you.

Fans aren’t impressed at all. Looks like their young owner is throwing his weight around a bit.

According to my mate who’s a massive Sunlan fan, it’s a hell of a shock. He said no one saw it coming.

Have to agree with that Tony. I have had a couple of Sunderland supporting mates on the phone tonight saying how shocked they are and they are no happy with their young chairman/owner at all.

In addition Vera and her boys are getting vexed about the FA Cup tie as Newcastle will be entitled to 15% of the ticket allocation, that’s about 7000 Geordies on the loose in the County of Durham. Expect a Sunday 11.00 a.m. ko time and the cops to reduce the allocation considerably on “ health & safety” grounds.

Bizarre decision. It feels like a few of these sackings are happening in quick succession so as to get the man they want in before another gets them. I wonder if Swansea or Sunderland want Heckingbottom or Wilder.

My friend was similarly shocked, just didn't see it coming at all.

Noooo, I can't believe that; surely all that Geordie/Mackem Northumberland/Durham rivalry is a thing of the past now that they're both hand-in-hand within the Metropolitan County of Tyne & Wear.

Fully agree.

The STID documentary, which was pretty good, did give the impression of this obsession with "we're a big club". One bloke talked about "our ground", another about "how many travel". Fair enough. But Sunderland's history is not magnificent for a club with such a large catchment area.

And, at the end of the day, you can play in front of 75,000 every week and be an unpolished excrement. And you can be a well-managed team put together for a relatively small amount of money and perform on the pitch.

But now they have to pay Mowbray off.

I don't understand quite what they expected. It's a pretty young team that's had a bit of a bad spell, but not bad enough to go full Watford.
