Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
So I’m planning on flying from the states to Manchester for the Bournemouth match in early march. What is the best way to get from the airport to burnley? I’ve got plenty of time and don’t want to spend a lot of money/drive.
I also don’t want to make like 25 transfers to save a few bucks so I would prefer to make the least transfers as possible.

I looked at northern rails but it looks like they are striking? Is that common? Manchester has a tram that gets you from the airport to Piccadilly then it looks like the x43 would get me to burnley. Can i buy tickets there or do ineed to do it online ahead of time?
Re: Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
I've taken a train from Manchester Road direct to the airport - can this be done in reverse?
Northern were striking - i was in Brum for busienss on Friday and could only go as far as Preston from Birmingham

Taxi from Manny airport 35 minutes around 40 quid.
Train 15 quid change once in Manchester centre 1 hour 30. 45 minutes Manny to Burnley.
Bus or tram to Manny centre then x43 an hour to Burnley.
At the minute each bus fare costs max 2 quid.
Pay all fares on the day.

They have not announced strikes for March yet. If times aren’t showing for your date it is most likely they aren’t in the system yet as it is too early.AshevilleNCClaret wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 1:38 pmI looked at northern rails but it looks like they are striking? You can either get a taxi (book in advance if doing this), TPE (transpennine express) train to Victoria then northern to Burnley, train (TPE or northern) to Piccadilly, tram to Victoria, then to Burnley, or train to Piccadilly then walk to cholton street and bus to Burnley.
Only one train an hour to Burnley and is often cancelled, so the bus way would be safest option as if you miss a train an hour wait at victoria isn’t ideal.
Trains from the airport to Piccadilly are frequent. I would not recommend getting the tram from the airport unless you have to as it takes ages.

Thanks. I thought it was a typo for 2 quid for the x43 up to burnley….is it normally more?

Being posh I haven't got a bus since Queen Victoria was alive albeit but my son gets the X43 to Manchester and it normally costs me about £75. Albeit I suspect £73 of that is beer money...

Yeah, all bus fares in Lancashire (maybe England) are capped at 2 pound. Not sure when that will finish though.AshevilleNCClaret wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 1:46 pmThanks. I thought it was a typo for 2 quid for the x43 up to burnley….is it normally more?

The train to Piccadilly is quicker, if they are running. The Metro tram is slow but guaranteed. At the airport the platforms are adjacent. You can sort it out there.
The X43 departs from chorlton street itself, outside the bus station.

Thanks for all of the info. I’ve got time on my side so the tram and x43 seem the way to go. I’ve already budgeted 73 pounds for beer money on the trip so I should be good

It’s a brilliant government scheme in my opinion, runs to 31st December 2024 so Asheville should be fine:Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 1:50 pmYeah, all bus fares in Lancashire (maybe England) are capped at 2 pound. Not sure when that will finish though.

As others have said Asheville, if you don’t want to get a taxi (easiest/quickest, but most expensive) the best is train to Manchester Piccadilly, then X43 to Burnley. Take that from Chorlton St - 2 minute walk from Piccadilly, out the station and straight over the bridge.
Enjoy the game.

Only 73 pounds? With the cost of ale these days over here I’d double that (smiley face).

I’d agree with those who have recommended using the X43 bus from Manchester. They run far more regularly than the trains. Takes around 75 minutes from Chorlton Street.
Asheville - It is only a short walk from Piccadilly to Chorlton Street for the bus.

Re: Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
If it was me I would get the train from Manchester Airport to Salford Crescent then get the train from there to Burnley Manchester Road. No walking to change method of transport, one ticket will get you straight through. Depending on the day and time, the change could be as short as 10 minutes. This is assuming trains are running, of course. Northern rail isn't reliable unfortunately.
If you prefer to stop in Manchester for a beer then a train to Piccadilly followed by the x43 from Chorlton Street would be a good plan.
An alternative is to get the train to Victoria and get the train from there to Burnley Manchester Road.
Either way there's plenty of options.
All the best for the trip!

Re: Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
There should be no more train strikes with Northern until at least April - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67577683
But as others have said for assurances on reliability the X43 would be a better option to take rather than the train. Even though there should be no train strikes it will still probably be cancelled or arrive 2/3 hours late.

Witchway X43/44 bus is as reliable as it gets.
I used it to Rawtenstall in January when the trains were striking.
Not to mention being significantly more affordable than a train ticket but of course takes a little longer

Metro link runs from Airport to Victoria Station. Ideal if trains are running also.

Re: Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
I do it for all home games. The only direct connection with no change between the airport and Burnley is Taxi. Cost 80-100.
Public transport.
Easiest and fastest is A) Train to Piccadilly. Tram to Victoria. Train to Burnley. Unfortunately this doesn't always run smoothly due to Northern Rail cancellations or train strikes. Tip: when purchasing a train ticket in airport get one to Burnley that allows you free travel on Metro between Piccadilly and Victoria.
A) Train to Picadilly. Takes approx 30 mins. Metro to Victoria Station (Bury Line) every 12 mins takes less that 10mins.
Train from Victoria to Burnley( Manchester Road) once an hour on the hour approx. Takes 45mins. Platform 6 train to Blackburn.
Total time with waits 2hours-2h 30m if lucky.
B) Train to Piccadilly (same as above)
Walk to Chorlton Street 15 mins.
X43 Bus to Burnley every 20 mins (half hour on weekends) 1H 45 mins- 2H 15m in traffic. Manchester suburbs, specially Bury New Road slooooow.
Total time with waits 2h 30 mins to 3 hours.
C) Train to Preston. (Blackpool North train) 1H 30 mins.
Train Preston to Burnley. If Manchester Rd 45mins. If Burnley Barracks or Burnley Central 1h 30mins.
Total 2H 30m.
d) Metro link Manchester Airport to Victoria Station 1H 30 mins
Blackburn Train as A) above. 3 Hours.
E) Train to Piccaddilly as above.
Tram to Prestwick 1 Hour.
X43 Longfield Centre Stop. (Walk 2 mins). Bus to Burnley 1H.
Total 2H 30m plus waiting time.
F) Scenic Route
Train to Picadilly as above.
Tram to Bury 1h 15m
Bus 483 to Burnley 1H through Rawtenstall, Bacup, Waterfot etc.,
Total with waiting over 3H.

Re: Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
The hourly Manchester Airport - Saltburn service stops at Victoria which means if you're lugging suitcases etc the changeover is easier however the layover at Victoria is nearly an hour.
Manchester Airport - Preston has 3, sometimes 4, trains an hour and then there are 2 an hour to catch from Preston into Burnley (one takes longer but still gets in before the next fast service).
You'd probably have less of a layover going via Preston, but both stations have pubs.

Re: Best way to get from Manchester airport to burnley?
I've just had a quick look at Uber and it's currently quoting me £38 from Piccadilly Station to Turf Moor.
Personally I'd get the train or metrolink from the airport to Piccadilly (£4-ish), then jump in an Uber. Saves trekking across town for the X43 and then sitting on a bus for well over an hour. And getting picked up by a taxi/uber direct from the airport can be a pain, easier to do so from the station in Manchester.
If you're not bothered about cost and just want fewer transfers, Uber is currently quoting £60 direct from airport to Turf Moor.

You could go
Manchester Airport to Salford Crescent 2 trains an hour 17 minutes and 48 minutes past takes 25 minutes (10.17 arrives 10.43)
Salford Crescent to Burnley Manchester Rd 2 trains an hour 22minutes and 55minutes past takes 54 minutes (10.55 arrives 11.49)
This is £24 return

X43 route changed again on way out of Manchester. Now stops at Princess Street, Market Street (across from M&S) and then the next stop is Strangeways. But the X43 in my opinion is by far the best option.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 12:13 pmThis is 100% your best ^^^^ , quickest and cheapest option . Assuming that your return flights are well into the "upper hundreds" of pounds... I would definitely get the train from Manchester Airport -> Victoria or Preston -> Burnley. Saving a tenner return or whatever it is hardly seems worth it.
I wouldn't get the bus, unless you actually have a thing for buses and the M60/M66/M65. The train is much more pleasant, there is no doubt.

Well, you can't get more american than spending almost nothing for clothing not made in the USA,and then gorging yourself at a all-you-can-eat buffet...Acting Claret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 10:19 pmI was in Asheville in March for a couple of days. Thanks for all of the info. The trains seem nicer but don't want to deal with a possible striker/other issues.
the subway and then the bus seems most safe... might try the trains on the way back.

You don't need to decide until the day, anyway. If the trains are running, get the train. If they're not, get the bus. The train doesn't sell out, you can always get straight on.

I'll be doing that Saturday. Just far less risky than relying on trains imoClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 4:29 pmX43 route changed again on way out of Manchester. Now stops at Princess Street, Market Street (across from M&S) and then the next stop is Strangeways. But the X43 in my opinion is by far the best option.

I'd no idea on the new route and was in Manchester a few weeks ago. When I was set to leave the only stop I knew was definitely still there was Chorlton Street so I walked there from close to M&S in the pouring rain only to find the bus stopping exactly where I walked from.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 11:30 amI'll be doing that Saturday. Always the bus for me though, more frequent and more reliable.

With Xmas markets in Manchester and flooded roads, the X43 has been taking over 2 hours recently.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 11:30 amI'll be doing that Saturday. Just far less risky than relying on trains imo
I would take the train in December.
