Question of Sport finally killed off
Apologies if there’s another thread but was announced yesterday that QOS had finally been put out of its misery by the BBC stating “ financial pressures “. Apart from Paddy “ kiss of death “ Mcguiness , I wouldn’t have thought QOS cost more than a few brass washers and tea bags to film . Rumours that PM was offered a revolver and a bottle of scotch are not confirmed .
It joins Top Gear and to a lesser extent Football Focus as once great shows reduced to infantile scripted nonsense .

Comments made were “ we have to provide value for money to the licence fee payers and prioritise high impact content”
Laughable, repeat after repeat programmes, often at peak viewing times not to mention some of the other crap they think people want to see.

50 years of one of the best quiz programs on TV killed off within 2 years of McGuinness hosting and 2 non entities as team captains. Stan's blind man on his galloping horse could have seen this coming.

Let’s not pretend it wasn’t a big steaming pile of turd a long time before McGuinness began to present it.

Me too.
I liked Sue Barker and the csptains. They got the prog. Opportunity for top sports people to meet and compete and have some fun.
Then they literally wrecked it. BBC must have some strange and hopeless decision makers.
Simple prog wrecked.

Re: Question of Sport finally killed off
Have only been a very occasional viewer in the later Barker years , though was always ultimately a light hearted but decent sports quiz . Putting Paddy in the chair and turning the show into some pretendy banter led comedy show was surely chasing an audience which never was .
Top Gear was also an awful shadow of past glories ( good show even pre Hammond /May) . Always thought the BBC got a very tough ride from the media , but now feels like an almost obscure satellite channel such is their BBC1 output .

Re: Question of Sport finally killed off
I think the BBC is in a tough position with shows like this but is dealing with it really badly. It is in the nature of such long running programmes that the personnel need to be refreshed sometimes to keep the whole target audience engaged. But what they haven't adapted to that among younger generations there just isn't that much of an appetite for them no matter who is presenting. I think they probably would have been better running with Barker, Tuffers and Dawson for as long as they could and accepting there might not be a future for it after that.
Same thing with Top Gear really - they did a bad job replacing Clarkson but it had effectively become the Clarkson show. You can't just carry that on without him.

Ditto and likewise.
Many posters on here said the same when the programme changes were first announced. The BBC said plummeting viewing figures were one of the reasons behind scrapping the programme.
I noticed last night there were at least 2 programmes advertised as “celebrity specials” which is another good reason to switch channels.

Financial pressures?
The BBC pay out disgustingly high salaries to a bunch of non entities. I wonder how many people have to pay a licence fee to line the pockets of the top 20 on this list - and that’s before a programme has been made.

A must watch for years although I gave up on it a long time before McGuinness. But it was obvious the minute they went down that route with him, the end was coming. Sad to see programmes like this disappearing.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 1:38 pm50 years of one of the best quiz programs on TV killed off within 2 years of McGuinness hosting and 2 non entities as team captains. I still hum the original (or at least 80's) theme tune in my head with fond memories.
I remember back scuttling one of my girlfriends in front of the TV while it was playing.

While the oft maligned Linekar is paid a huge salary, the fact remains, that as a presenter and anchor the jug eared soy infused remainer is excellent at his job .

When you take out of the equation that Lineker occasionally states very obvious criticism of the government, it's hard to look at the list of highest salaries and not think Lineker and Shearer stand out as being incredibly overpaid.
It's right for the BBC to pay market rates to retain popular hosts and at least in theory it's right to do the same for news presenters and journos. There's loads of people who could do MOTD though.

Re: Question of Sport finally killed off
I suppose it depends whose salary you are comparing Lineker’s with. Match of the Day is one of the BBC’s flagship shows so it’s no surprise that the presenter of this show is the highest paid. I also disagree that loads of people could do that job as well as Lineker. Similar to Clarkson and Top Gear mentioned above, I suspect MOTD would lose popularity if he was replaced.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 2:52 pmWhen you take out of the equation that Lineker occasionally states very obvious criticism of the government, it's hard to look at the list of highest salaries and not think Lineker and Shearer stand out as being incredibly overpaid.

Well we have to pay. The Licence fee is an anachronism in todays media world. Let the BBC compete in tge 'real world' and see how the get on.

Re: Question of Sport finally killed off
lineker gets lots of stick just because he's a liberal.
as bordeaux said on another thread it tends to be the same folk that complain about cancel culture who also object to lineker's overtly political views.
when i see football on the telly usually the only real intellectual in the room is gary. the fact he can pronounce 'th' properly is worth his wages alone.

On Saturdays’ Football Focus we had the totally clueless, inept Alex Scott informin us that the highlights from Spurs’ visit to Nottinem Forest was comin up. She can’t ( or won’t ) pronounce a G.

The release of Sue Barker was the beginning of the end. Now let's get rid of that MOTD and finally end that historic relic called the "Licence fee."

It’s not a regional accent, she possesses, you know what I’m getting at. She’s the female version of Clinton Morrison, with the lazy emphasis on certain words. Awful to listen to. I’m not advocating a return to 1940’s and 50’s Pathe News style commentaries, like the Harry Enfield character, Mr. Chomondley Warner, but our language is English. If the presenters can’t manage it, then get people to do the job who can.

While the BBC is generally quite poor and agonisingly woke these days it’s not as dreadful as those “ cancel the licence fee” loons who also seem obsessed with cash payments and Covid conspiracies.

Pretty sure Alex Scot most definitely speaks in a regional accent , it’s that London English patois that I’m sure about 20/30% of Londoners ,certainly black and people of colour speak in .Though AS has a more polished version . I’m sure it’s even officially now recognised as a dialect as well .
