Are Burnley and Chelsea pioneering the same path?

Post by claret59 » Sun Dec 17, 2023 8:54 pm

Interesting feature on Chelsea this afternoon's TV in which they seem to be trying out a similar recruitment model to Burnley and with very limited success to date.
They have spent a fortune on new players none of which are yet good enough for first team football. They are , supposedly, buying for the future.
Their results this season are better than Burnley's but still only averaging a point a game.
Perhaps ,clutching at straws here, they know something the rest of football management have yet to discover!

I’ve tried the same model playing football manager, the problem is you get sacked before you find out if any of your youngsters come good!

Only thing both clubs have in common is American owners who don't actually know anything about football but are led to believe that there lies a secret winning formula by using stats instead of knowledge and experience.

not sure I would use the phrase pioneering - there are many similarities (though our Academy is miles behind theirs) including the use of AiScout (which was originally developed with the support of Chelsea's Academy

it is not surprising that both ownership groups are adopting similar policies given their backgrounds are similar

If you want to see a club that is regenerating with an steady influx of young absurdly gifted players then look at Real Madrid - that is a process that has been building over a period of around 5 years - not all have been a success but they have been transitioned in a couple at a time with the summers addition of Bellingham now being seen as an incredible signing

We tried this long before the modern era. We were going to have the team of the 70’s…. Then came the 80’s.
