No watching Chelsea v Newcastle
Re: SPOTY
Pointless award but always baffles me how little recognition they give to Ronnie O'Sullivan, one of the greatest sportsmen of all time in one of the few sports left on the BBC

Re: SPOTY
Haven’t watched this programme for decades once they started messing about with the format.
I think Wyatt Earp was still around forget about Mary Earps.

Love the idea of creating a thread to say you're not watching something.

Every single year there’s a thread that goes the same way as wellevensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 8:15 pmLove the idea of creating a thread to say you're not watching something.
Decided to watch for half hour but must admit, it is crap, just watching to see Broads highlights

I’d love to know if there’s anything they’ve tinkered with that’s seen it’s figures sky rocket? They’re so poorly advisedkentonclaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 8:49 pmViewing figures have plummeted over the last few years, since the BBC tinkered with the format viewing figures struggle to reach 2.5m hence the switch to midweek instead of a prime weekend slot.

Re: SPOTY
I didn't watch it. This year. Or for about the last 10 at least.
An utterly pointless awards ceremony aside from (hopefully) giving recognition to the likes of Bobby Charlton.

So England women lose a final and their keeper gets the prestigious () award yet England's U21's win their tournament without conceding a goal and Lord Trafford isn't even considered??

Wish I'd put a tenner on a lady footballer winning it. Really didn't see that one coming.

Re: SPOTY
Congratulations to Mary Earps. Her performances really did propel an under-strength England team far further in the World Cup than our overall play would have got us. She's a worthy winner this year.

Re: SPOTY
Presumanly the BBC chooses the shortlist to vote from though. The competition wasn't exactly strong. Whether that is to "engineer" the winner they want or just represents a poor year of sport is another debate.

Re: SPOTY
The viewing figures for this “once prestigious event” have nosedived to such an extent that not only has it lost it’s prime Sunday evening slot, it is now hidden away in the Tuesday evening schedule.
Likewise, with A Question Of Sport where the viewing figures plummeted from over 4 million to under 1 million after Sue Barker was replaced and the programme was presented in a changed format.
People always come out to applaud the diversity changes to these programmes but none of them can be bothered to tune in to watch them, and are actually switching off as the plummeting viewing figures indicate.

Re: SPOTY
Not really "the public". The rules were...
There are two ways sports fans can vote: by phone or via the BBC Sport website. Votes are only valid once the voting system opens and before the lines close on the night.
To vote online, you must first sign in to or register for a BBC account and then find your favourite candidate. There is no charge for this, but you'll be limited to one vote per BBC account. (I believe voting is opened during the show when one of the presenters announces voting is opened)
If you wish to vote by phone, numbers will be shown on screen during the live show.
So- those who can be arsed to have a "BBC account" and are made aware (whilst watching the show) when voting is open then go online to click + those who are watching the show live to spot the telephone number (and can find the enthusiasm to phone in and pay 15p).
It'd be interesting to see the number of votes cast in total this year but I believe BBC stopped revealing these a few years ago. In the first ever vote (1954 won by Christopher Castaway) around 14.500 votes were cast. I suspect more than that but not hundreds of thousands ( SPOTY viewing figures were reported as falling from 4.7 million in 2019 to 2.3 million in 2020 so almost certainly a lot less viewers last night - maybe under a million?)

Good point. Only people with a telephone or the internet could vote.LeadBelly wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 11:05 amNot really "the public". The rules were...

Re: SPOTY
Not quite. Only people with a telephone or Internet who are willing to share their details with the BBC who will then use them to try to brainwash them with pro-trans and anti-racist messages.
The Daily Mail brigade won't fall for that trick, even if it means a woman wins SPOTY again.

Re: SPOTY
I don’t watch SPOTY, but what diversity changes are these? I suspect viewing figures have dropped because less people are interested in watching a televised awards ceremony when they have access to hundreds of different television channels and endless on-demand programmes and films. Not to mention being able to watch key clips almost exactly as they happen via social media.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 10:21 amThe viewing figures for this “once prestigious event” have nosedived to such an extent that not only has it lost it’s prime Sunday evening slot, it is now hidden away in the Tuesday evening schedule.

Re: SPOTY
Like many others, i've not watched it for years - basically for me since the BBC had no sport of note, and therefore couldn't show highlights of the year. It went from being a fantastic sporting review show covering everything from Football, Cricket and Racing, to rowing, boxing, showjumping and everything in between, with an awards ceremony at the end, to a pretty average entertainment show quite quickly in my view.

We are probably about 3 years away from the short list being made up of members of the winning side of the boat race, a couple of crown green bowlers and someone from strictly such is their attitude to sportdandeclaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 1:22 pmLike many others, i've not watched it for years - basically for me since the BBC had no sport of note, and therefore couldn't show highlights of the year.
