Instead of spending millions on the "Town to Turf" stuff and (in Colne) widening the not-too-busy dual carriageway from two lanes to three at a new traffic light, why didn't they spend the cash on getting existing roads up to standard?

In addition to the money spent on roads HMG are giving the Cockneys another £250 million to upgrade the Piccadilly Line, I am not sure if this is in addition to or part of the £6.4 billion provided since 2020 to support transport in London as outlined in the article below

Meanwhile up here on Tyneside the Metro system is literally falling apart with nearly every day gaps in service due to train failures, apparently we have some nice new trains coming in from Switzerland but we haven't seen them yet and tbf HMG are building stations in advance of the Ashington to Newcastle rail line re-opening supposedly in 2024, so you will literally be able to ride direct from Newcastle to pitsville, birth place of Jimmy Adamson. More underground tunnels in Ashington than the whole of the Gaza strip (probably!)

Probably a fair comment in some respects. However, how much would the £ per person rate come down up here, if we had even a half way comparable public transport network?

I’m certain that there are a hell of a lot of people in the north not using public transport because it’s:

Unreliable
Too costly
Too infrequent
No service in their area
Overcrowded

I do try to use public transport here in Chester. I live close to the city centre so the services are not too bad and my bus pass comes in handy. However when using Merseyrail to Liverpool I'm expected to stump up the fare, unlike the Scousers on the Wirral and north of the Mersey who get free rail passes as well. My good friend who's a ST holder at Goodison travels to home matches FOC. Train from Spital to Moorfields, soccer bus to Goodison. Sorted. There undoubtedly is a big disparity between the haves and have nots on public transport but I do feel more should be spent on fixing them pesky tank traps.

Agreed, would need a leap of faith to invest in the hope that it turns things around. Even then, you would hope that they had the good sense and realise that it will take a decade at least to change peoples habits in terms of using public transport. It would be a generational change to get public transport used as frequently as it is in London, but it needs to happen.

Even then, you would hope that they had the good sense and realise that it will take a decade at least to change peoples habits in terms of using public transport. It would be a generational change to get public transport used as frequently as it is in London, but it needs to happen.

The reason people in London use public transport is not because they have a different attitude, it's because driving a car is so inconvenient. It's only the city centre that is really public-transport minded. Out in the suburbs they still use cars.

If we want people to use public transport more, then car driving needs to be made so vastly expensive that only the seriously rich can use it, or so very inconvenient that buses are better. Possibly making 90% of roads buses-only and banning street parking, for example.

Don't underestimate the convenience of having a car. Those who can afford it, will pay quite a lot for it.

Have you seen how expensive a school bus fare is? There’s probably not much difference cost wise if you drive your child to school. Add that to the fact that it will probably be on the school bus that bullying takes place given a lack of teacher presence.
