Probably the first time she's had VAR, I would imagine it takes some getting used to.

Good luck to her, she can't be anyworse than some of the useless refs we've had this season

Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
Work hard, try your best and learn everything you can about the game and how to referee it, prove yourself worthy of a place in the top league (even tho it only took you 8 games to prove it) then run around for 90 minutes listening to instructions from another referee in a studio somewhere.
Like everyone else, I wish her the best of luck. Let’s hope we don’t notice her, that’s the best sign a ref’s doing ok.

Women don't like taking instructions from men, maybe she'll tell the VAR bloke that she's sticking to her on field decision!
Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
Should be nowhere near the men's game. I see no need for it at all. There isn't a shortage of male referees. Virtuous box ticking bull****. Its just another ploy to demasculate the game.

I would much rather a female ref and a male commentator than a male ref and a female commentator.

Good luck to her. Despite all the misogyny on here I am proud that our club is involved in this first for a premier league game.

Not to the extent of having to recruit females to do the job. This isn't being done because of a shortage. And if we're going down the road of capabilities and the oft quoted "can't be worse than some of the males we've got", maybe we should replace James Trafford with Mary Earps.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:48 pmIs that a fact? I thought there was, and there certainly appears to be a shortage of capable ones based on recent experience.

(The analogy - by the way - is irrelevant, since she doesn't need to match a male "physically" if her positioning and judgment are sound. There are some excellent female referees officiating in junior games that I have watched)

I imagine she will do it very nicely. "Sorry, VAR, I saw all I needed to do first time. I'm sticking with my first decision. Hi groove, have you slipped into a time warp? It's now 2023, not 1921 when the FA used the "reasoning" you are quoting to ban women playing football. Other than physical differences, which is why men and women often compete separately in sports, there are no reasons why we need to reserve some jobs for women and others for men.

Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
Hopefully the players will be more reserved about abuse and trying to pressure her. I don't have any problems with this; she will be implementing the same rules as the men so there is no reason she won't be as good or better than the quite frankly useless crop of top flight officials. Consistency is all we're asking for, both in and across matches.

Yep we've got an article from CT and a thread from Jdrobbo focusing on this whilst they completely ignore some horrible misogynistic comments on the Joey Barton and SPOTY threads.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 7:55 pmGood luck to her. Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
Really hope she has a good game -
My only question is has she gone through the rigours of reffing in the football league and the championship? Or just been chucked in to the PL?
If she has and it’s a process then brilliant - if it’s chucked straight in then that’s a different matter.

Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
Barring a baffling foul given against Amdouni when he had been shoved, I thought she was great. The game flowed and didn’t you notice the players felt less entitled to shout and whinge at her - something to be said for that. She had authority.
Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
Thought she favoured then in some 50 50 decisions apart from that brilliant performance.

She did alright anyway.
She could win next years SPOTY and wear a 'knickerless dress' like Mary Earps.

Re: ARTICLE: Rebecca Welch to make history at Craven Cottage
There are plenty of male referees who have reached the PL after not much time in the lower leagues. Similar to how some players will rocket up the leagues when they’re clearly good enough.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 1:00 pmReally hope she has a good game -
