Re: African Cup of Nations
Zaroury and Foster I presume for us?
Although it's possible Zaroury isn't picked given his lack of playing time
And that Foster is advised to not go for his mental health

Re: African Cup of Nations
At the moment I don’t think losing Zaroury will have a detrimental affect on us ,
Re: African Cup of Nations
I don't think Zaroury has been selected this season.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Unlikely we'll be missing anyone, Zaroury hasn't been included in Morocco's provisional 55 man squad and Foster, with his recent illness, has been advised not to go and South Africa advised not to select him.

Obviously I’m on my own in believing Foster will be there…
Re: African Cup of Nations
Xaroury was just a bit too early for his own good.

The non selection of Anass Zaroury is a total mystery as is Bennys continued absence instead we have totally ineffective Redmond and Ramsey.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Can hardly say they have had a chance other than the odd 10 minutes here and there in mostly dead rubber games. The performances of Koleosho and then Odobert have had more of an impact and injuries to Benson in particular over Ramsay and Redmond.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 8:31 amThe non selection of Anass Zaroury is a total mystery as is Bennys continued absence instead we have totally ineffective Redmond and Ramsey.
Re: African Cup of Nations
Must be reasons why Zaroury hasn't played much. Maybe he just isn't good enough. He certainly had improvements to make and didn't have great form after the World Cup. But I'm surprised. He was the one from last season I thought could make an impact.

Re: African Cup of Nations
I’d be very disappointed if Foster went to AFCON
Re: African Cup of Nations
I'd be surprised if he went
Re: African Cup of Nations
I'm with you I think he'll go, bit of a coincidence VK did the interview saying he shouldn't go and that he'd spoken to his international manager then a few days later he was fit to play even surprising VK

Re: African Cup of Nations
I’m not sure how fit he is to play right now. Certainly not the player he was pre illness. That is no criticism of the player. He is going to need a lot of time to get back to full fitness
Re: African Cup of Nations
looking at that, forests win on boxing day was a massive blow for us
Re: African Cup of Nations
Im not sure we have any power to stop him going. Especially when hes playjng every week for us

Confirmed that foster isn't going.

Good stuff. We will never know what went on behind the scenes but this seems like the sensible decision

A shame for Foster, can only guess obviously but wouldn't blame him for being disappointed.

Feel for Lyle, feel for South Africa but ultimately I think this is the right decision.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Vinny’s comments were pretty clear about him not going - his support network and treatment programmes will be UK based so it would be remiss just to abandon that. It’s a real shame for him but his health has to be the priority.
Re: African Cup of Nations
Hope they’ll be kind enough to let him play for us as I’m sure they could stop him from playing if they wanted to.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 2:55 pmFeel for Lyle, feel for South Africa but ultimately I think this is the right decision.
Re: African Cup of Nations
Hope they don't ... Lyle playing and getting the kind of reception he is getting from the Turf Moor faithful is probably doing him a lot of good.

I don’t think any National Team has the power to do anything like that do they?
Maybe if they tried coercing him but then that would soon get out and be massive news - not a good look.

Re: African Cup of Nations
I think, but may be wrong, that if a club refuses to release a player for international duty for reasons other than injury, then under FIFA rules that club cannot play that player for the duration of the international call up.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 3:49 pmHow on earth could they do that? He’s contracted to Burnley FC.
That would not apply in this situation as South Africa have not called him up.
Re: African Cup of Nations
I imagine we would win that argument. There's clear documented health reasons for him not going.hetheclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 4:19 pmI think, but may be wrong, that if a club refuses to release a player for international duty for reasons other than injury, then under FIFA rules that club cannot play that player for the duration of the international call up.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Pretty certain if a club stops a player from playing an international match they aren’t allowed to play until after the match.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 3:44 pmI don’t think any National Team has the power to do anything like that do they?

Re: African Cup of Nations
Just a thought - is it possible for Forest (and others) to lodge an appeal for a postponement(s) on the basis of the number of international call ups. I’m sure that if one of the “beautiful “ clubs were in the same situation a strong case would be made for special exemption.

Lots of Injuries to Forrest players to be hoped for then.

It says in this report that Foster wrote a letter saying he didn't want to go and that he was agitated when he was named in the squad.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Seemingly a huge lack of empathy and understanding from the SA head coach.

Clubs know the situation when they choose to sign African players.IWOODLOVETT wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 4:45 pmJust a thought - is it possible for Forest (and others) to lodge an appeal for a postponement(s) on the basis of the number of international call ups. Re: African Cup of Nations
Can't blame South Africa and the South Africa coach being a tad angry at not being able to include Foster when he's able to play for his club side.
The other way around and Burnley fans would be fuming.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Only if they didn’t understand the reasoning. The medical experts and Lyle himself will know which decision is most beneficial to his health. And ultimately Lyle has asked to not be included in the squad. The SA coach’s comments come across as accusatory of Kompany and show absolutely no support of Foster or consideration of his health.

Re: African Cup of Nations
The lack of any empathy and understanding of Lyle Fosters medical situation by the South African's, suggests him not taking part in AFCON is very much the correct decision.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Unless of course they understood the situation, and realised he needs to stay where the help is for him, it's not the playing that's the problem, it's the help required for the other 99% of the week which wouldn't be available at the tournament.

Re: African Cup of Nations
Course it would. You can get help anywhere these days, not just in East Lancs. Take a nano second to share any information with a specialist mental health team in Africa. Teams meetings to discuss the notes, and where the discussions started and where they are going. What he’s responding to and what the triggers are…. I’m sure you get the point. It’s entirely manageable. I understand continuity can help, and using teams or some other means of face to face discussion that can still be a tool.
Those are the reasons I used to decide whether he’d go or not, and why I decided he’d be off.
And whilst some are absolutely adamant he won’t be going, I believe time will tell on that score.

Re: African Cup of Nations
The comments/language around Lyle’s illness and this news about him withdrawing from AFCON, not necessarily on here per say (though there’s a bit of it), more on other digital platforms and the response of the RSA manager absolutely shows just how much more needs to be done to spread awareness/understanding and alleviate the stigma of people suffering with their mental health.
Comments along the lines of :
- ‘bet he gets well in time for AFCON’
- ‘why are we playing him if he can’t go to AFCON’ etc etc
are just not good enough.
Please, if you’re one of them that has even had a train of thought along those lines get educated on the topic.
I know I can be wrong about plenty of things (as we all can) but this isn’t a trivial matter - still a lot of work needed to be done.
