Another signing on this day in 1999 and a player close to leaving too

An excellent signing, I didn't realise he was only 26 when he arrived.
John Aldridge seemed to do really well at Tranmere, I can't remember him doing anything else after them.

Every time I hear the name Mickey Mellon, I can't help but hear the squeaky voiced Radio Lancashire commentator from the mid 90s shouting his name. Perhaps Ian Chisnall?

I remember being really excited by this signing. If I remember, he didn’t really get going initially and came far more into prominence the season after when we gained promotion.

I'll always remember MM from when he whacked that one in at the BHE against Blackpool, then ran backwards
towards the lashers fans, whilst pointing at his name on the back of his shirt. Priceless. :D

Very good player he was.

He’d played in 24 of their 27 league games that season but six days earlier, they’d gone out of the FA Cup against Ipswich, losing 1-0 with Ipswich benefiting from a John McGreal goal just months before he made the move to Ipswich, and that left them needing to sell
I’ve read this a few times and not sure it makes sense. It reads that McGreal left Ipswich for Ipswich

It's all coming together nicely now.

One or two more signings and we'll have the backbone of a good side.

I’ve missed out a word - should read ‘John McGreal OWN GOAL’.

I’ve corrected it.

Mickey Mellon’s transfer to transfer to Tranmere was the only time in my life I have known about a move before it happened and I have no doubt that will never happen again! Long story but I was on the lash in Dundee with former loanee Paul Robinson and he rang Mickey Mellon who told him he was off!

Good player for us so I was a bit gutted.

That was the opening of the new 'East stand' that night I think?

A few years later. It was in the promotion season. I have a strange feeling it was a Sunday game.

It was a Sunday sat right behind the nets when it went in a cracking finish as was his one at Scunthorpe.

East stand opened very early in 1996/97 season. I think it might have closed for the first two games that season.

We had season tickets for the new stand and had to sit in the Cricket Field for the first two home games. Was it a win against Walsall and defeat to Shrewsbury?

I think it opened against Blackpool but a couple of years earlier.

That's what I seem to remember and the third home league game was Blackpool but we'd played Mansfield in the League Cup after the first two. It was definitely open for the Blackpool game and possibly for Mansfield.

10th September 1996 a 2.0 win with goals from Gleghorn and Nogan if it’s the same game!

Yeah just looked. It was 2-0 but Gleghorn scored. Not Mellon.
