Man Utd allocation at Wigan tonight
United have been given one of the side stands with 8k tickets instead of the usual stand behind the goals which holds 4.8k
Wigan fans aren’t happy about this.
Sure we have had the side stand at Wigan before ? 0-0 draw under Stan, Neil Wood made his debut for us I thought he was going to be special because he was from Man Utd. He was awful

Burnley fans were in the stand the first year we played at the new ground, they were meant to be though! Can't remember another game where we were in the side but might have missed it.

Re: Man Utd allocation at Wigan tonight
On our first visit to this ground we arrived just before kick off and the end was pretty much full with more outside still waiting to get in. The game started and the decided to let us go in this stand which wasn't open yet, we got in this stand then some decided it would be fun to go in the end behind the goal with Wigan fans in.
Had they then gone into the main stand they could have done all 4 stands in 1 game.

Apart from York, that's the most chaos in a ground I've ever encountered.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:34 amOn our first visit to this ground we arrived just before kick off and the end was pretty much full with more outside still waiting to get in. Re: Man Utd allocation at Wigan tonight
I remember a 0-0 draw there under I think Cotterill (so wouldn’t be a Neil Wood debut) and we were definitely in a side stand yes. I remember nothing of the game in the slightest but I recall it absolutely lashed it down after the game like I’ve never seen before, an absolute monsoon. We were soaking like we’d jumped in a pool going back to our car.
Re: Man Utd allocation at Wigan tonight
What's Wigan's average crowd, about 8 thousand? Plenty of room in the other 3 stands for their regulars and those who just want to watch Man United.
Think I've been down the side twice, both terrible nil nil draws. Three times if you count our first ever game there when they couldn't accommodate us all behind the goal.

I might be wrong but I am sure you could buy tickets for this game then they announced you could pay on the day.dougcollins wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:35 amApart from York, that's the most chaos in a ground I've ever encountered.
Was quite similar outside as well that day.

Wigan is a top away day.
I wouldn't be happy about having 8k United 'fans' up from London in Burnley though, so best of luck to the local Wiganers.

I was in the ground early for both these games. Didn't really see it as chaos. More fun and games.dougcollins wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:35 amApart from York, that's the most chaos in a ground I've ever encountered.
The most chaotic I've seen it was Bradford away when both of us could go down, Bradford didn’t have the money to print tickets, so it was pay on the day. Behind the goal stand was full before 2pm with thousands still outside. They opened a section of the side stand for Burnley fans moving Bradford up. Burnley fans just kept coming and stewards kept moving City fans ùp, well past the halfway line.

Re: Man Utd allocation at Wigan tonight
Did Neil Wood not score a free kick on his full debut at home?
Just looked it up you’re right it was his debut at Wigan. Maybe the Norwich game was his home debut either way he was crap

I think the last time I was there was for a friendly maybe around 1998? From memory I think we drew 3-3. I am fairly sure Steve Blatherwick got one of ours and Geoff Horsfield got at least one of theirs.

I was only a young lad but my memories are Burnley fans set off running down the empty stand towards the Wigan end once they were let in, long time ago and my memory might be a fantasyQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:28 pmI was in the ground early for both these games. That’s how I remember it, think it was un-allocated seats, I just remember it as a free for all. They then opened the stand to the left of us and Burnley fans charged down. From what I remember, I think Alan Lee missed a sitter to win us the gameBurnley1989 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 1:05 pmI was only a young lad but my memories are Burnley fans set off running down the empty stand towards the Wigan end once they were let in, long time ago and my memory might be a fantasy

Just a little game of British bulldogs. There was at least 2 pitch invasions to the right hand side stand before the game after goading from the Wigan fans.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 1:05 pmI was only a young lad but my memories are Burnley fans set off running down the empty stand towards the Wigan end once they were let in, long time ago and my memory might be a fantasy
Burnley took a mob of around 800 in response to Wigan bringing 300 to Burnley when Ian Wright just signed. There was lots of trouble near the miners.
They took over Wigan for the day until the walk back to the station after the game. Around 200 rugby lads emptied from a club for a ruck. Both sides claimed victory.

Definitely on the side for the two 0-0 draws there under Stan Ternent (the Neil Wood and Bradley Orr debut) and Steve Cotterill. Both were in 2004.

Is that the one when the police were clearing debris from behind the goal to let our lot in? Loldougcollins wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:35 amApart from York, that's the most chaos in a ground I've ever encountered.

I don't think some fans appreciate just how bad we have been at Wigan, and how welcome last years 5-1 win was.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 1:54 pmDefinitely on the side for the two 0-0 draws there under Stan Ternent (the Neil Wood and Bradley Orr debut) and Steve Cotterill. I had missed one visit ever to watch us at Wigan (in that sherpavanwindscreenpaint trophy) and last season was the first time I had seen us win. Think it was 12th or 13th visit if I remember when we looked back at results

That one they had a separate turnstile ostensibly for kids but were letting anyone through and charging either adult or child fee……in cash……..nice pay day for the turnstile operator (s).Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:28 pmI was in the ground early for both these games. They were on the brink of admin. Owed the printers too much money for them to do any more work for them.Jimmymaccer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 3:04 pmThat one they had a separate turnstile ostensibly for kids but were letting anyone through and charging either adult or child fee……in cash……..nice pay day for the turnstile operator (s).

Who remembers the FA cup game at the Turf in 1991, where Citeh were given the whole of the Cricketfield stand and the regular away terrace of the longside?
I guess it boosted the attendance though!

I remember being sat in Sainsbury’s car park and disappointed I couldn’t attend a game at Wigan in the late 90s. My disappointment was short lived when I think we got an absolute hiding.

Travelled up on the X43 with my partner. She'd not been before and became worried...not about us being on a bus full of city fans...but of what they were saying. About our fans!fidelcastro wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 7:46 pmWho remembers the FA cup game at the Turf in 1991, where Citeh were given the whole of the Cricketfield stand and the regular away terrace of the longside?

They were on about Burnley fans being a mad lot and how they'd kicked them out of "our end" back in the 70s..
Re: Man Utd allocation at Wigan tonight
That 0-0 under Ternent was one of the worst games of football I've seen. Pitch was atrocious too.

Also went to this match and only thing I remember is as you say the torrential rain and my mate slipping down some steep grass banking on the way to the ground and being covered in mud!jedi_master wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 11:35 amI remember a 0-0 draw there under I think Cotterill (so wouldn’t be a Neil Wood debut) and we were definitely in a side stand yes. The first visit to the new ground in the 1-1 draw we were treated to a Marti Pellow tribute act before the game I think before the chaos started and Alan Lee missed a last minute sitter!
