The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon)

Post by South West Claret. » Sun Jan 14, 2024 11:54 am

Here’s some of the run down of the Africa Cup of Nations:

I’m particularly interested in two of the teams competing Namibia and E Guinea.

Make that just Guinea.

Guinea drew 2-2 today with 5 times champions Cameron today.

Guinea were also robbed of their talisman with a thigh problem sidelining “Serhou Guirassy,” the Bundesliga's second leading scorer this season, behind Harry Kane.

Wonder what the odds were for that shock result.

I watched that game. Both sides absolute tripe.

It felt like I was watching an FA Cup first round replay they sometimes show on the tele.

Really that’s a surprise as the short highlights looked very entertaining.

Been watching the games and find them what I expected, some very good players surrounded by some very poor players.

I suppose we have to remember that African football is relatively in its early stages of development.

That’s probably a fair assessment.

I suspect when you get to the semi final and final it would be like watching a side maybe like Ukraine used to be with Shevchenko in or something who are clearly miles above the level the lads they are playing with.

One or two top quality players with lots of pony ones providing them.

Some of the teams have really good squads with some well known players in, knock out stages should see an increase in quality but saying that the group stages are throwing some shock results about

South Africa v Namibia 8pm tonight will Namibia avoid defeat in this one after their shock win against Tunisia.

Very unlikely but you never know.

Caught up with the highlights this weekend. It's just so good. Some blistering goals and some big dollops of chaotic defending. What's not to love?

I'm hugely in favour of an expanded World Cup. We should be seeing as many teams as is logistically possible.

Also big shout-out to the commentators on the highlights I watched. British, I assume, but the style is more international (for want of a better word) and really added to it.
