World War II hero (RIP)
Hero is used way too often these days. He's a man who truly was one.
RIP Mike Sadler.
Last original member of the SAS who used the stars to navigate across the North African desert during the Second World War
Mike Sadler, who has died aged 103, won both the military medal and the military cross as an honorary “founding member” of the wartime SAS before going on to a long career in the British secret intelligence service MI6. He was the last original member of the SAS.

By the way, the obituary is well worth reading - such an interesting life.

Very brave men who knew that capture probably meant death. But someone had to do it.

Wonderful read
Re: World War II hero (RIP)
In our modern times of comfort and often first world problems, I struggle to comprehend what these poor young men must have witnessed and gone through. My grandfathers served but never talked about it. That guilt of coming home yet so many of your comrades didn't, quite simply breaks my heart.
Rest in peace Mike, a true hero.

Another of the 'Golden Generation' gone and very few still with us sadly.
A brave man and a remarkable life and career.

Some people aren't going to like what I say here but I don't care!
I don't think this fellow was sent to war. He wanted to fight. He sounds like the sort of person war is made for. He was not an ordinary person. I can't comment on whether he was scared or not. Certainly what he did was brave in our eyes but I bet he didn't see it that way. It was an adventure with risks.
I've no argument about him except to me the real heroes of war are the ordinary people who have to go and do extraordinary things.
