Roma sack Mourinho
Not really a surprise, Roma sitting 9th in the league, and after just losing the Rome derby.
Newcastle? The Saudis may be looking for a big name manager shortly?

He’s a good manager for short periods. He tends to go into a club who are at a low ebb, turn them round, win a trophy and then it goes stale very quickly after that.

But suprised with this one , he’d won the conference, got them to Europa final , and flying in this yrs Europa and were only couple points off top 4 week or so back . He’s done wonders tbf with the budget he’s had . I’d imagine it’s more Jose falling out with them /throwing his toys out ? Unless he’s been offered something big and juicy ?

He's a good manager is Mourinho. I don't think his ego helps him stay at a club for long but his record speaks for itself.

You can not like him as a personality, but his honours list speaks for itself.

I get the feeling hes lost a lot of the passion and determination which took him to the top.

Won Roma's only European cup, so he will be a legend there forever.
Only club he's failed to win something with was Spurs and they sacked him the day before they bottled a cup final.

His record speaks for itself but he's a manager who can go into a club with good players and win things. He's not one to build a squad and I doubt he actually improves teams very much over time.

He's a mixed bag. A lot of the time I think his arrogance is pretence but then when you read about him running after a referee in a car park because he robbed him of a title it's just not on.
He always had this ambition/obsession with winning the CL with three clubs. It caused him his downfall IMO.
Still surprised Roma have sacked him. De Rossi is a pure Roman and Roma man. I hope it works for him.

Re: Roma sack Mourinho
Will be a very controversial call, the De Rossi appointment strikes me as something to halt a public outcry. Jose has been revered by the fan base there as still is. They have sold out 40+ home games in succession, it was never sold out pre-Jose, he has galvanised that fan base (in his own way!).
First European trophy for them, followed by another Euro final, not really firing in the league but they have much less of a budget than some of the big boys in that league, and not helped by Fiorentina and Bologna having stellar seasons above them either.
He does what he does, wins trophies and makes headlines, it has a shelf life however - this was his much maligned “third season” where things implode historically.
Second place finish and a Europa league win with a United team that had little investment at that stage - they would kill for that now.

Re: Roma sack Mourinho
In today's football it's not very often that can be evidenced because you simply don't get the time. Ever since Chelsea I can't recall him staying about long enough anywhere to build anything. From about late may 2016 he was at Manchester United & was out of work for nearly a year before joining spurs did over a year there, maybe he could have built something at roma but I think they was hindered with FFP during his tenure.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2024 11:39 amHis record speaks for itself but he's a manager who can go into a club with good players and win things. Re: Roma sack Mourinho
His first Chelsea team was probably the most underrated in the history if football. Conceding just 15 goals one year in the PL. If it wasn’t for the robbery against Barcelona, they’d probably have won the CL as well. Called finishing 2nd with Man U his greatest ever achievement, and you can’t really argue against that given what they did before and after he left.

Easy to forget he got Utd a League cup and Europa league double in his first season . Champs league , 2nd in prem and an fa cup final in his 2nd. To think of the ragged mess Man Utd are now
Re: Roma sack Mourinho
Very much a manager of his day, incredible in his younger career but seems to have lost it. One of those managers who the players loved but also could fall out with quickly.
To use a wrestling term he played the heel role well, I sense he'd be a genuinely nice guy to have a drink with. He wasn't a player and his background story is very interesting.

He has a certain style, and i think that determines if you like/ or dislike him but he did win Roma's first trophy in over 1 years and was a penalty shootout from winning them their 2nd last season in the Europa League final.

His problem is people can’t stand him for more than a couple of years.
He always takes the same route, starts off happy and smiley and ends up moody and paranoid.

It’s the trail of destruction he leaves behind every club now too. Players on a fortune who are past it and the cost of getting rid of him and his coaches.
Invariably he will have fallen out with fans, the press and everyone else.
Then there will be the players he will have called out and blamed at some point.
Living on past reputation now but no doubt there will be another club stupid enough to appoint him.
There is no way a club as big as Roma especially with what they spent under Mourinho should be finishing where they have in the league…..winning one Europa cup when they should actually be competing in the Champions League is not compensation. Just as it’s not for United fans.

Re: Roma sack Mourinho
And that is why he has been sacked. For the budget he commands you have to deliver champions league football by finishing in the top 3-4 in the league and he hasn't. I think his style suits knock out football more than weekly points based football and that is is less lucrative, so from a business position it become unsustainable over time. But from a football perspective 2 consecutive European tournament finals and winning one of them would be considered successful tenure by many.
