Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
Yes a very glowing piece on professionals, community-identity of the club and the changing face of League cricket.
Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
Good article. Looking at the comments at the end of the article Michael Holding is mentioned as playing against Walsden. He must have been deputising for whoever played Walsden as he never pro'd in the Central Lancs League. Trust me, I would have remembered if he had!

Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
Interesting story of the India pro playing the day after the World Cup final and getting a ton in the game against Burnley.
Amazing to think he played.
Some poetic licence though, he didn’t get a ton. And of course Burnley won the game.

He tells a good tale about it on our podcast, IIRC Stan ran him out.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 17, 2024 6:07 pmInteresting story of the India pro playing the day after the World Cup final and getting a ton in the game against Burnley.

Suppose it’s where you class the Lowerhouse boundary. If it’s lumped in with Rosegrove I see where they are coming from.ClaretsPadiham wrote: ↑Wed Jan 17, 2024 5:30 pm‘Lowerhouse sits in an area of high deprivation’
Erm no it doesn’t.
Quite a few houses in what i’d class as Lowerhouse are falling apart too (I.e. Lowerhouse Lane).
Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
They just can't resist the impoverished Burnley spiel"Lowerhouse sits in an area of high deprivation. " Absolute garbage, what are they comparing it against a village green cricket club in the Cotswalds ?

Lowerhouse goes from the Lane Ends to the Canteen...after the Canteen it's Padiham.

Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
According to the deprivation index quite a bit of Lowerhouse is deprived (Lowerhouse Lane, Rutland, Cumberland Av), where the actual ground is located is not

sjb are you suggesting that Lowerhouse is deprived of trophies or deprived in general? Sounds like Poorhouse to me!

Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
Burnley CC benefitted historically from the old eligibility rules. All the solicitors , accountants etc (toffs) qualified by working in the offices in the town centre, Whereas Lowerhouse had by working qualifications foundry labourer and weavers (lobs) Hence the early supremacy of BCC trophy-wise Since the relaxation of the qualification rules the honours have been much more evenly shared. With the star of LCC now in the ascendancy I fully expect The House to sweep all before them.

Last time I was at Liverpool Road it was certainly deprived and very depressing. To be fair it was in the sixties !!!

Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
I think Burnley as a whole isn't far from being an economically deprived area, apart from a few areas, especially when compared to rest of England. Many post-industrial towns have struggled against the loss of reasonably paid, and well paid, jobs to the large metropolitan areas such as Manchester/Salford, Leeds and Liverpool.
To say that, just because a few streets of good housing and industrial/shopping areas constitute a reason for Lowerhouse CC not to be described as in an area of deprivation insinuates that no-one outside the proximity of the ground supports the club. I grew up on Accy Rd in the late 1960s and early 70s, and all of us from the neighbourhood supported Lowerhouse - if more in theory than actually attending many games!

Re: Lowerhouse featured in the Guardian today
Excellent stuff. The House will have a couple of returning players next season along with a new professional.
Looking forward to the cricket season already with the current state of play with the Clarets on the football.
Still up the Clarets and the House.
