Mumbai advice
Anyone been?
Looking for any info I can get as I truly don't know where to start.
Looking at it as an option on my way to Singapore later this year so I think maybe 2 nights there would be a good place for a stopover.
Obviously I'm gonna do my research to see if it's worth bothering with but any quick info from you well travelled lot would be great.
Cheers

Re: Mumbai advice
Never been but the other Indian cities I have visited are pretty fascinating so well worth doing I'd say.

Was there last month. Go to India gate and get a cheap boat ( around £2 each return) to Elaphanta Island to see the fascinating caves with sculptures carved 1500 years ago. Do it yourself. You don’t need to go on an organised tour. You can do a tour of Mumbai including a slum tour and Bollywood tour. Suggest you look at Viatour. The Taj Palace hotel is great for afternoon tea. You need to book in advance. Airport is around one hour away. $10US in a taxi. Be prepared for an assault on your senses!

Good place to eat 10 min walk from IndiaGate
Cafe Mondegar

Also think about going to the Dhobi Ghats ( outdoor washing place). Likely to be included in Viatour tour

Re: Mumbai advice
is the Gateway of India the best place to stay for pottering about / semi touristy things then?
Looks a long way from the airport - or if not exactly far, very long in traffic!

Re: Mumbai advice
I think that goes without saying - especially since I fear no street vendors hygiene record!

From my experience (of New Delhi and Agra):
- Going vegetarian can sometimes be a safer option
- Try to eat something you can guarantee would have been cooked immediately and not stored in unknown conditions.
No guarantees either way but I managed to get through 10 days with no "incidents"

Been to India a few times and the food is great provided it’s prepared properly, don’t drink the water obviously (bottled is ok)
The people are very friendly, don’t drive.

What do you want to see particularly? Queen's Necklace? The taj? Nariman? Juhu? Jugu is where I stayed. Sun and Sand Hitel. Near to Bollywood
Re: Mumbai advice
Was there for a day last year as was working just outside the city, it’s an exceptionally busy city. Like crazy busy. Wasnt overly impressed with what I saw but it’s probably unfair to judge with spending so little time in it.
I preferred Bangalore which had a better climate and a better vibe around the city. Nowhere near as busy either.

Re: Mumbai advice
Probably the India gate, a few things just whilst roaming the city
Generally I just want to potter, have street food and many beers
Re: Mumbai advice
Colourful, noisy, dirty, cheap and excellent food... I was there 2 days ago! Only for a short time so others will have better advice. My only recommendation would be to get a prepaid taxi at the airport (there’s a counter, 1 level down after exiting arrivals) so then you know the price. I got to the Byculla area in 50 mins and I paid around 600INR (about £6)

Re: Mumbai advice
Mumbai is great. Getting around takes time though, and south Mumbai is really nice. I did use a tour guide to see the sights of the city. Mumbai Moments. https://www.mumbaimoments.com/
The owner is Amish Sheth and he makes sure to meet all his clients during their tours. I did a full day tour with a guide with a car and driver. Saw loads of the City, far more than if I tried by myself, and really felt it was the real Mumbai, as well as the tourist spots.

Re: Mumbai advice
Bombay is a great city. Smelly, noisy, colourful and absolutely chaotic. Well worth a two day stay. Long time since I've been, hence the name, but I used to love it.

Re: Mumbai advice
Been there and as other posters have said noisy smelly but great, shocking poverty, how can they have a space program with widespread poverty.
Went to a restaurant near India gate and the palace hotel where you can still see the bullet holes from the terror attack a few years back.
The people are very gracious and happy to see you
Enjoy

There's a guy called Karl Rock who has a YouTube channel that might be worth checking out.
He's actually a New Zealander but he lives in India with his Indian wife and he makes lots of interesting travel vlogs around India (and other places) giving lots of helpful tips, insights and advice for tourists.
