Substitute Goal Involvements

Post by JR1882 » Sat Jan 20, 2024 10:42 am

Poor use of subs has been raised a few times on here.

Burnley and Sheff United the only 2 sides with less than 5 goal involvements by subs (goals or assists)

Brighton Arsenal City & Villa all 15+ (not our concern up that end) however….

Wolves 14
Bournemouth 13
Everton 10
Fulham 10
Palace 9
Luton 7

Sort of says what we al already know, we very much lack the ability to change the game, or we make the wrong changes.

How many have we actually had?

Brownhill and Larsen have scored from the bench.

Some of the changes baffle me at times and i think they cost us points

I can’t think what the other two would be.

Doubt there are many other teams who make their subs in the late 80s as often as we do.

Burnley and Sheffield United are also joint lowest scorers so the substitute stat could be purely coincidental.

And therefore quite misleading although if our sub stats were better then we probably wouldn't be joint lowest scorers. Chicken and egg methinks.

Totally agree the strange point being the substitutions last season seemed to do the exact opposite.

I'd be interested to see how many goals we have conceded after making our 1st substitute. I'm with those who think our subs have often cost us points.

Our game-changing subs unfortunately work in the opposite direction.

Apart from at Cardiff when he took our front three off in one big change which cost us

The bizarre substitutes show VK has struggled with naivety and judgement, evidencing for the umpteenth time that elite players have a lot to learn before becoming elite managers, just playing at this level is no guarantee, nor is generally being quite clever and articulate. The list of failures is endless, Gerrard etc.

It’s not the subs fault, all good players, but too often the wrong one at the wrong time. When to stick, when to twist. When to try plan B.

But, especially after last season when we owe him a lot, the worst thing to do now is bin him off and let another team benefit from those mistakes and the experience it leads to. I’m sure he will become a successful manager at this level and I’d like that to be with us. Otherwise we could start a long decline and I see that as more likely without Vincent.

I imagine we are low down most (positive) stats in the PL
