I have never been so distraught at a result.
I’m hindsight it spurred us on. Almost everything we’ve enjoyed thereafter has roots in that night against Spurs.

The most magical, brilliant night ever even if it ended in heartbreak. As a teen I had a little cry after that match.

That's mad.
I do still think about the poor chap in the seat infront.
He collapsed at 3-0, ultimately passed I believe.
Poor chap and family.
At least he thought we were going to a cup final.

I'm ashamed to say I'd forgotten about that. It gave the whole thing perspective.alboclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 10:38 amThat's mad.

What a night that was. I remember queueing from the early hours outside the ticket office as a kid to make sure I was there. It was a heartbreaking result but also incredible pride that our 'little' club got so far in that tournament. I thought we might have peaked and we would fall away a bit after that, little did I know....Fretters wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 10:26 amHas it really been that long?

Grezza's face still gets me.
Re: 15 years ago today
As close to tears from shear pride as I’ve ever got. The goosebumps were unreal for those final moments and at full time with the singing for the team. Seem to remember two spurs players (possibly wood gate and Dawson) clapping our fans too at full time.
Despite the overall outcome it’s up there in my top ten of favourite nights as a Burnley fan. York, Chelsea (earlier round), Charlton, Aberdeen and last year at Ewood beat it but it was such an emotional night and effort from the lads.

Re: 15 years ago today
What a heart breaking night. We played at West Brom three days later in the FA Cup and I didn't really want to go, almost went out of duty.
I can still see Pato celebrating that late equaliser at the Hawthorns right in front of us, it looked like, and it was, a defiant show of determination that told us our season wasn't over.
But I hate Pavlyuchenko - I can't ever forgive him for breaking our hearts that night.

Probably one of if not the best atmosphere I've ever witnessed on the Turf, it actually felt like the stands were rocking!
Never felt so gutted after a game, to get back level then lose how we did in extra time absolutely heartbreaking.

Re: 15 years ago today
It was fitness and squad size that did for us that night, our lads were out on their feet, they gave everything.
Unfortunately Spurs had the quality off the bench but more importantly the fresh legs.
An utterly magnificent performance from us.

I noticed Ben Alnwick was in goal for Cardiff at Plymouth yesterday. I may be wrong and someone will correct me maybe, but I think it's the (young) Spurs goalie from that night.

If only away goals had doubled. We was robbed.

Jensen really should have saved the Pavlyuchenko goal.
Re: 15 years ago today
The ridiculous thing was that they counted in extra time, giving Spurs an extra 30 mins to score one. The tie should have ended at 90 mins with us having one more away goal than they had.
Still, those were the rules and we knew them.
Re: 15 years ago today
I’ve never felt so gutted after a result. Was at uni in Manchester at the time and it was a depressing X43 journey back, especially as one of my housemates was a Spurs fan. Don’t think a match will ever affect me like that again.
Re: 15 years ago today
We did, some of the players didn't apparently

Re: 15 years ago today
It was Jak Alnwick in goal for Cardiff yesterday. Ben last played in the 2018/19 season for Bolton. He was at Spurs for five and a half years but that was one of only three games he played for them and was his debut for them two years after signing. Ben & Jak are brothers.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 11:39 amI noticed Ben Alnwick was in goal for Cardiff at Plymouth yesterday. Ben played one FA Cup tie three days later against Man United but his only other appearance for Spurs came in the Premier League on the final day of the 2009/10 season when he conceded four goals on the Turf.

The worst I’ve ever felt after a game, more than relegation games and with better atmosphere than a derby game
We’d done the impossible in pulling it back and was 2 minutes away from Wembley

Re: 15 years ago today
The most memorable game of my 35 years watching us.
Clearly there were more successful games, but that game, that night, was special. I was disappointed at the end but not gutted. We fought hard, it was an amazing game.
What I was though, was absolutely shattered at the end of the game. I felt like I had played the game!! Never felt like that before.
If i recall correctly was chucking it down too.

Absolutely distraught after this game but what a night on the turf. As posted above acted as a catalyst for promotion in what was an absolutely superb season!

Man time absolutely flies.
I remember that night and game very, very vividly.
Incidentally, I did venture into the 110 club prematch for the first and last time as well to give some tickets to some acquaintances of mine.
One of the best individual performances that i've ever witnessed from Robbie Blake that night, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric, for it all to end in heartache with that ridiculous new rule about away goals only counting after extra time... Soul destroying!
I can remember the lads at 110-120 minuted desperately trying to get one back absolutely running themselves into the ground - even Ade had a half chance and young JayRod was flying into everything!
At least our efforts weren't in vain though; it could've easily dismantled our season that sort of loss. For the lads and gaffer to pick themselves up after that gave a huge insight into the togetherness of that group.
Wonderful season that - massive shame what happened halfway through the one after, mind.

Re: 15 years ago today
It was the first leg that killed us. We battered them in the first half and played some superb stuff. Missed quite a few chances.

It sure was, I was in the lower tier of the Longside and came off absolute drenched.

Remember the first leg, some Burnley fans calling the team and a few disagreements about getting behind the team.
I was in Tenerife for the game at Turf, watched in Linekers with a few Spurs fans. Can remember how proud I was when Burnley boy Jay scored. I was distraught for days and hardly spoke to the Mrs

In general the rule to go to extra time instead of away goals favours the team who plays the second leg at home as they get home advantage for the extra 30 mins.

Re: 15 years ago today
Fair point. If the results had been reversed with Spurs winning 3-0 at WHL and us winning 4-1 at The Turf this would never have been raised by Burnley fans. But we do like to feel a sense of injustice when decisions don't go in our favour.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 1:42 pmIn general the rule to go to extra time instead of away goals favours the team who plays the second leg at home as they get home advantage for the extra 30 mins.

So many emotions that night.
