Horrible flu going round

Post by ClaretsPadiham » Mon Jan 22, 2024 4:33 pm

Anyone had it ? Girlfriend been poorly for a week and iv caught it and it’s horrible, breathless, freezing, headache, cough, and body aches, a few at my work had the same.

Also know of a few other family/friends that have had it in the last few weeks.

I got an offered a flu jab a few months ago with having Asthma, didn’t have it though.

Hoping I don’t get worse, at the moment it’s just about bare able, but this is only day 1 so I’m expecting to get very poorly judging by how my girlfriend is(Been off work for a week and totally wiped out).

That just sounds like proper flu.

Most people don't have flu when they say they have, just a bad cold.

Yes lots going around, both me and my wife had it bad before Christmas, it got to the point where I had to see the doctor, she said there are lots of these type of strains going around. They prescribed me a short course of antibiotics and it eventually did the trick.

I work with the GP every Monday as part of my Advanced Practice training.

Last 3 weeks it’s been easily 2/3rds chest symptoms.

A lot of people are getting covid, feeling rough, then picking up a bit but then developing a secondary bacterial infection which floors them. Does seem particularly bad this year

Something wiped us out over Christmas and the New Year.

Not covid either. Still not fully over it. Be careful.

According to official figures COVID numbers are way down, and have fallen each of the last 3 weeks, so hopefully people will stop getting things other than the normal winter ailments

My mother and I both had the flu jab and both had this flu - though not as bad as the OP, by the sound of it.

The flu jab doesn't stop you getting flu, just the more serious strains of it.

Our Christmas plans were ruined by a very heavy cold. Started with it a couple of days before Christmas Eve. By Christmas Day it took me all my effort just to walk upstairs. We didn't get right until we were well into the first week of the new year.

Yes, had it for the past 7 days and after managing to totally avoid flu in my previous 41 years on this planet, it’s totally wiped me out.

Absolutely horrific.

If you can get the flu jab, get the flu jab.

Hospitals are currently inundated with RSV respiratory illnesses. You won't get VIP treatment if you're admitted as you're sadly likely to be on a corridor.

The flu vaccine helps mitigate the impact of the flu. The vaccine is nothing to fears, influenza is though

You never had flu in 41 years ? That’s some going.

Interested to know if you had the covid jabs ?

I had something like this last winter. Started off with something similar to a chest infection but no phlegm. Kept going the doctors and trying different things. In the end nasal steroids did the trick but it was horrible until they kicked in. Completely exhausted, struggling breathing, shaking.
Had my flu jab this year so touch wood. Did have a nasty bout of covid in October that floored me for a week

Covid was rampant last October. Kids going back after the summer break most likely drove the rise in numbers.

I was thinking about this the other day as the missus was saying how many people were off ill at her work. Made me realise I've not had so much as a cold since having Covid in 2020 (which was pretty mild). That's a decent run of dodging stuff.

Yes I’ve seen that. I don’t think covid is directly causing many issues, but it’s a lot easier to pick up a more serious bacterial infection when the immune system has been dealing with a virus. Hopefully with the reduction of covid we see reductions of secondary infections

Had a dreadful December. A cough, no sore throat, no pain but couldn’t stop coughing. After being brave for a week went to the Doc who cleared it with anti-bios.
Granddaughters 21st later in month caught summat, possibly covid, that put me in bed for 4 days. Really nasty. Loads of others caught it as well and it totally ruined Christmas and New Year for all the family.

I know a few elderly folk in hospital with it, and they've all been jabbed with the triple strain vaccine.

There are some nasty cold viruses going around at the moment. I've had covid after being jabbed and it wasn't to bad, had flue once in.my adult life the year I didn't get jabbed, you know it's flue as if you were offered a grand to get out of bed when it's at its worst you wouldn't or couldn't. Hope you get better soon

Yep, managed to avoid it for so long so didn’t know what all the fuss was about with flu. Thought it’d just be like a bad cold.

It’s the second worst I’ve ever felt in my life - first being glandular fever when I was 18 years old, which took many months to recover from (still haven’t fully recovered, never will and have bouts of extreme fatigue as a result)

I’ve had COVID a couple of times but haven’t had any boosters for a few years.

Whatever the hell this flu is, I’d pay whatever is necessary to be vaccinated against it next winter.

It has always amused me when hearing people say “I’ve had a bit of flu” when they’ve had the sniffles or been off work for a day. When you have genuinely got flu it wipes you off your feet, sometimes for over a week, and it can then take another week or more to get over. You certainly wouldn’t describe it as having a bit of it anyway.

If you know what you are doing & careful you can prevent a lot of the bugs getting into your system in the first place.

Washing the hands regular & not touching your nose or mouth or eyes can make all the difference, airborne germs that's different. Most of the time we assist.

You can get it mildly or you can get it severely. Just like covid or any other virus. Flu is caused by a different set of viruses from colds - if two people get the same virus and one is laid up but the other isn't, it doesn't mean that one has a flu and the other has a cold - it means that one has had the virus (whichever it may be) more seriously than the other.

The amount of people I see walking around in shops coughing openly into the air and making no effort to cover their mouth is astounding. It’s like they learned nothing from Covid.

Well, after my Christmas and New Year bout of very heavy cold, I'm going to start carrying a small bottle of hand sanitiser again, especially after using shopping trolleys or baskets. The virus I caught before Christmas may have been airborne, but at least sanitising my hands will cut out one possible source of infection. A couple of seconds doing your hands is better than a couple of weeks laid up.

I am sure I have legacy respiratory scarring from a previous PE and pneumonia but i also had a chest cold over christmas and still have the remnants of the cough right now. Alot of colleagues and family members seem to be suffering from chest infections this last 4 weeks or so. I am definitely washing my hands more frequently moving forward.

This.

All age groups too, but it's usually the type of people who look like they would struggle to hold a knife and fork correctly. And yes, I damn well will judge. If you are walking around a shop or supermarket coughing and sneezing your head off, and you cannot be bothered to cover your mouth or even make a lame attempt to do so, then you really are a selfish and uncouth pleb.

Maybe. Or maybe they claim they have flu every time they get the sniffles if they’re claiming it several times per year?
