Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Hugely effective player for us was Fletcher. Scored some terrific goals for us to add to his incredible work rate and his talent in the air. Club record signing at £60,000 and he more than repaid that.
Four superb goals in that game.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Was it that season that the return game at Villa Park was a 3-0 win for us?
The majestic Keith Newton scored, I went to that, I think it was that year.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Not sure which season that is but can easily be narrowed to two. We are wearing white socks which replaced the claret & blue hoops in 1965 and Villa were relegated in 1967 so it’s either 1965/66 or 1966/67.gawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 10:55 pmMissing link!

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Brief Frank Casper appearance near the end. ‘67 at the earliest. Also Morgan, Bellamy, Irvine(post quiff), Coates. I’ll check Clarets Chronicles in the AM, shouldn’t be difficult.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 11:27 pmNot sure which season that is but can easily be narrowed to two. Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Who is the Burnley player at 30 seconds in? Was it Frank Casper? He was at BFC with Willie Morgan for one season, so it could have been.gawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 10:55 pmMissing link!

It must have been 1967-68.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Surprised that it hasn't been mentioned yet but there's an ex claret playing for Villa, spotted very early in the video and also with the assist.gawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 10:36 pmEnjoy!

I swear that Fletcher defied gravity at times, he appeared to hover when waiting to headca ball in.
Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
I think we are playing Chelsea in that clip, not Villa.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Thank you. I thought it couldn’t be Villa.
Chelsea game: 4-11-67. 1-1. They took lead 82mins, Morgan equalised 89mins. All the players I mentioned higher up played.

We didn't play Villa in 1967/68 - so it can't be Casper

My favorite ever team including players like Stevenson, Newton, Waldron, Dobson, Collins, Fletcher, Thomas, James, Casper. What would those guys be valued at todayClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 10:14 amAnd forget my last post, I'd only seen it on my phone and now realised it's not Villa

It's now been spotted that it wasn't Villa but Chelsea and so it was Casper.

Definitely Chelsea. Bonetti, Harris, McCreadie & Hollins all shown. Plus Wednesday played in white shirts in the December 23rd game.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 10:46 amIs it Chelsea?.......Or Sheff Wed the following month.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Not saying it was the first time ever, but this game was the first time I recall 'No Nay Never' being sung on the Longside.
It was simply 'Blackburn' Rovers then, no idea when/how 'B@st@rd' appeared.
What a memorable day that was, brilliant.

(Just to be clear, I'm on about the OP Villa '72 game, not the '67 Chelsea one)

I think I was there. I’d be about 10 and using my grandad’s season ticket sat in the CFS.

Really enjoyed that clip because that was the era when I became a Claret
Thomas Casper James and Fletcher - great times
Interesting that both Man U and Villa were in the second Division then.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
Are there away fans cheering in the CFS when Villa scored? I thought the end of the Longside next to the CFS was where away fans went

I still find it odd to see footage where the Longside has no perimeter fencing.
Also love the strange little dance that Alan Stevenson always did after he punted the ball up the pitch.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
There were always varying numbers of away fans in the CFS - you could just turn up on the day and pay, no questions were asked.
Very little trouble though.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
I saw both Villa games in 1972-73. I sat in the CFS and remember Villa fans being in there as well - and there was no trouble. The away game (3-0) was just about our best away performance of the season. I was a student based just outside Birmingham and I had been hearing for weeks all about what Villa were going to do to us at Villa Park. And we absolutely thrashed them, in fact the 3-0 scoreline flattered them.

Re: Burnley v Aston Villa August 1972
"Thrashed them" is the perfect description........6-0 would have been more than realistic.
