Surely a gem is a player that’s successful at this level?
Apart from Foster and potentially Odobert has anyone else been even close to successful
Re: Tonights Football
It would be nice if Brighton could get 3 or 4 this half. I can dream.

I believe Palace have just signed a gem in Adam Wharton but he’s not played a PL game yet.

Re: Tonights Football
I very much doubt Everton will get any points back, because:ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 8:33 pmI don’t think anyone is giving up, just being realistic. If Everton get some of their points back then we are going to have to finish above Luton and Sheffield United plus a team currently running at a point per game. To get to a point per game, we would now need 26 more points from the final 17 games. As I said, it’s being realistic.
- they admitted breaching PSR, the only argument was by how much
- they admitted they did so to “strengthen their non-existent midfield”
- their mitigation arguments were extremely poor and only one of six accepted to any degree
- they’re now reliant on proving an error in how the process was conducted or the severity of the punishment was disproportionate - but being the first to be punished won’t help their cause as they are the precedent
- it’d be highly embarrassing for the PL and the commission if their first real attempt at governing themselves were undone by an appeal
- the world knows they’ve committed the same offence again
I reckon it’s more likely they might get another deduction than get points given back
Not that I think it’ll matter for us, either way.

Re: Tonights Football
I think given the age profile of the players we’re signing it’ll be a few years down the line before we’ll know if buying the young talent we’ve bought is a more effective strategy than our previous “experienced pro’s” strategy.

It will take a seismic collapse on Luton’s part and massive up swing from us to survive. We are so far short of Luton in every department.

Don’t think RV suggested we’d signed anyone of elite quality. Not that I think Neymar is that anymore (arguably ever).Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 8:55 pmGood players but the way some go on, you would think we signed the next Neymar.
Not sure either are a scratch on McNeil when he broke through.
Well have to agree to disagree on the McNeil point too.

Fair play to Luton, they are giving themselves a real chance of survival owing to the fact they are a team greater than the sum of their parts and they really know how to defend and press…….which we don’t!

They might have a point if Luton was in London.CombatClaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:09 pmMy friend who works for Easyjet said there's no way Burnley can complete with the London clubs.
Perhaps I'm missing something.
Re: Tonights Football
The problem being that this long term view is very different to connect with when compared to the immediate cut and thrust of a survival battle and all emotion that goes with it.
In all honesty most people have given up on this season, hence the lack of passion at games and the resigned shrugs of indifference when that last minute equaliser went in the other week.
The problem is that that a long term policy is difficult to take to at supporter/game level. It’s also assuming that we keep getting promoted back up too, which isn’t a given.

Awoniyi goal for Forest pending VAR. Not good news for us that hes back, their record with him in the team is much better. I really cant see anyway out for us sadly.

Trouble is, when/if we get relegated, premier league teams will look on these players as not good enough, so who can afford them, if we put them all up for sale tomorrow, I doubt we'd get back half what we've spent on them.

Re: Tonights Football
But for that reffing atrocity we’d have done the double over them. Ditto beaten Forest away. Did beat Sheffield at home. Should have beaten Palace at home. It’s really only Everton at home from our rivals that we have struggled against.
The problem is twofold.
One, reffing decisions, that by my reckoning has cost us 8 points. Two, when a side does the total epitome of “not turning up”, like BHA tonight, it has not happened against us. Heck, even Onana had a stormer against is for Man Utd.
So yes, we are odds on to drop, and yes, we have been naive or poor at times, but I don’t see us as worse than Forest, Luton or Sheffield.

It is a different level, but if we had improved the team, would Luton currently be this far ahead of us having finished 21 points below us last season?Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:23 pmwhat are you basing 'we haven't improved the team' on ? We are playing at a different level.

Gems.
So we're OK putting up with a poor side, who will undoubtedly be relegated, because some of them may be worth something in the future?
Is that the plan?

and how do you suspect he is gaining from player trades ? How is it clear we prioritized players for financial gain rather than for improving the squad ? Have we not improved the squad ?Rileybobs wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 8:22 pmI don’t know his reasons for signing a contract extension, but he was presumably handsomely rewarded for doing so. I also suspect he may have something to gain financially by trading said players.
Either way, that’s not really got anything to do with my point. It’s quite clear we prioritised player trading for financial gain above building a squad that could compete this season.
Also, us signing players and hopefully selling them for a profit is the only way forward for clubs like us

I don't think anyone can argue we've made the odd mistake in the market, that much is clear, I'm not sure we've gone backwards though. We've definitely not gone forward enough though

Re: Tonights Football
I know you’re very much an over emotional type as seen with wishing Tresor was dead after a last minute leveller and with a rival winning tonight it’s quite hard for you to cope, but it’s quite literally the opposite of a ‘fact’ that the team isn’t improved, it’s what’s called an opinion.

Re: Tonights Football
The results tonight are irrelevant, we’ve been down from the second VAR robbed us against Luton. The points requirement is well beyond us. Focus should be on hopefully not going down with a whimper to build some momentum for next season and getting some idea of the players we’re going to be building our promotion tilt with.
Talk of sacking Kompany is silly - the club are clearly backing him again this window with an eye on 24/25 so he’s here without question. We’ve messed up this season massively, but it’s done now. Ae need to accept it and hope we’ve learned from our mistakes when we’re hopefully back here in August 2025.

Never understood the inclination of a few to run their own team down.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:28 pmCan we give the refs a rest. We are where we are because we are one of the worst teams to grace the premier league.
One of the worst ever is a gross exaggeration and insult to our club as a whole. We will probably drop, but our “correct” points tally but for official’s errors would rank as “not quite good enough yet”, rather than being one of the worst ever. Also worth remembering it is also Luton and Forest who have been gifted am extra point which further distorts the effect of it.
Re: Tonights Football
I think that's being a little unfair. I described Tresor as being a waste of oxygen on the night but I didn't wish he was dead, despite my clumsy choice of language. I did admit soon after that I shouldn't have posted in such a way as well.RVclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:30 pmI know you’re very much an over emotional type as seen with wishing Tresor was dead after a last minute leveller and with a rival winning tonight it’s quite hard for you to cope, but it’s quite literally the opposite of a ‘fact’ that the team isn’t improved, it’s what’s called an opinion.
I think what you've posted here says far more about you. You've always been a holier than thou type but you forget yourself far too often to be convincing.
