Re: Current first team squad
Slightly more balanced, but still too many centre backs and could probably still lose a winger or 2

That was Obafemi, and yes he's temporarily departed.

Re: Current first team squad
I personally feel that VK has been brought up and schooled in football in the "right way" in many respects and in terms of lots of the things he's tried to bring to our club he's used what he learned from the big boys and has attempted to move us more towards that model, both on and off the field and that's generally been great. I feel transfers is one such area, but I'm not sure for a club like us, in our position, it's actually working atm. The big boys clearly take something of a scatter gun approach to bringing in players, both young and proven and for every 2 that prosper, 7 or 8 turn out to be dud, impulse buys, or never even kick a ball in anger and are quietly slipped out the back door. I feel we're looking a bit like we're going down that route and I'm not sure we can afford it. Despite yesterday's outgoings, we still have a huge squad and many won't even make the bench most weeks. Plus we never pick the same lineup (or bench) two games running. I was like others at the time in that I could be critical of SDs teams being so predictable that I never even bothered to check the line up when it was announced. We made far, far fewer signings, but they were well considered signings and hardly any were superfluous to requirements within weeks of arrival. Also, taking up on something Elizabeth mentioned on here yesterday, I don't think the way we're going about things just now will end well and there's definitely not as much connection with the team for me. I hope I'm proved wrong.

Re: Current first team squad
I don't think this is a good squad of players. They don't complement each other; they're just a load of players chucked together based on age and stats.
The only decent player VK has signed since promotion to the Premier League is Sander Berg. I'm sure the others will develop over time, but this squad is nowhere near the quality to make a do at this level.

Re: Current first team squad
Totally agree with DK...scatter gun approach to bringing in players and very few will achieve the standard. They are invariably young. If they all appreciate in value as Kompany suggests, and we make a profit from almost each and every one, well it might takes us forward longer term. If we make a loss from many of these, then I see financial dark clouds on the horizon.
If we are relegated it remains to be seen if we can sustain a squad of that size. If we're forced to sell, then surely their value will drop, not appreciate

Re: Current first team squad
Isn't the value of the players very much related to our place in the top division?
Nothing will drop the stock value quicker than relegation.
Staying in the PL would have been a better plan.

Re: Current first team squad
Quite impressive how so much has been spent (relatively), so many incomings... and we still have one left back who Kompany doesn't really fancy, and glaring gaps in midfield and up front.

Yep, goes without saying reallydougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 5:21 pmIsn't the value of the players very much related to our place in the top division?

Didn't seem to hurt Southampton who as well as selling lavia for big money, have just sold another one for 50m to juve.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 5:21 pmIsn't the value of the players very much related to our place in the top division?

Re: Current first team squad
I look at this current squad and can't name anyone who is my favourite.
I loved Muric last season, could have watched Cullen play like he did for 10 more seasons, got excited when Zaroury or Benson was on the ball.
Was hoping Foster would become my new hero this season, but no, not one player has made me sit up and take notice.
Odobert and Berge have played OK but I don't think 'great they are on the team sheet ' . At 2.00pm when the team sheets is announced it's all become 'Oh....right'.

Re: Current first team squad
We could make a good Championship team from the squad listed above , the thing is we don't have a clue who will be here next season. That is unsettling to me and I'm sure many loyal Burnley fans.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 10:36 amJust trying to get my head round the main squad now

Re: Current first team squad
I’m quite settled, and I’m a loyal Burnley fan.
I’d like to be rid of Kompany, but it looks as though he’s here for the long term. So sit back, enjoy winning the champ next season and having another bash at the Premier league the year after.
I can’t remember who said it, but; you leave the club one way or the other…
You do good you go, you do badly you go.
It is what it is

.....and still a weak looking midfield.

Re: Current first team squad
It’s pretty painful and a more disjointed mish mash I’ve ever seen as a Burnley supporter (1979) Oh , we’ve had far far worse teams through the divisions per se , but for the money spent it’s pretty sickening .
My main issue is ,if we go down ( I know I know but hope springs eternal ) is yet another rebuild but without any real hardcore prem experience to build around . We were superb last time but literally everything fell into place , great loans , signings , tidy prem players , money , momentum , a weak champ , and the whole “ Vinny factor “ .

Re: Current first team squad
Yes, and you are right of course, but it becomes easier to sell good players after relegation.
e.g, McNeil at £20m and Cornet at £17.5m. I don't think Everton/Wham even come in with a bid were we still in the Premier League that summer, and certainly not the £10m+ extra they'd both have cost, but taking the perceived 'best' players from a relegated team always seems like value.
So, if we get ~ £10m above buying price for Koleosho or Odobert after relegation, that will be better than not getting £15m above buying price if we survive because no one wants to buy them, if you can understand my logic...?!
Re: Current first team squad
So which one of this current first team squad is the £100 million man?

Re: Current first team squad
Correct! I will say however that Koleosho was the one who was becoming an exception and I was really warming to him. When he got the ball I did sat up and expect something to happen and then of course he bloody gets crocked!!!Nonayforever wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 7:05 pmI look at this current squad and can't name anyone who is my favourite.
