A59 at Blubberhouses

Post by Harrygate » Fri Feb 02, 2024 4:38 pm

For those traveling tomorrow from Harrogate and beyond, North Yorks CC have announced this afternoon that the A59 is being closed again from 6.30pm this evening due to new cracking. There is no date for reopening at this stage but it's unlikely to be quick. Back to taking your choice between Ilkely and Grassington!!

Is this on the section they closed last year?

I believe so. It's the section up/down the hill that is subject to land movement.

Cheers. Going to be a right pain, but so be it.

It’s a horrendous stretch of road, I can’t see any other fix long term without building a steel bridge to avoid the bends. The large wagons that use it won’t help.

Makes life painful travelling up to the NE for work, I’ll probably head up the M6 and cut across

Thanks for the heads up! It's a great drive over with fabulous views (in the daylight). The speed camera vans are usually lurking before and after the match as I have discovered a couple of times.

The works have started to build the Kex Ghyll 'bypass' (for want of a better word) in the adjacent fields near the bottom of the Ghyll, the part nearest Fewston res. Been going on over a year now, but I imagine it's a mammoth task and no idea what completion target date is.

It’s at the very bottom of kex gill on the level if your heading towards Harrogate before you climb up the hill passing the now closed pub Hopper Lane on the left. It looked to me on Tuesday that the area that’s fallen away is as a result of them digging out for the new road that’s butted up to the existing road. It’s a real pain, they've only recently opened it after a 5 week closure.

Thanks for the heads up, was meant to be heading over that way in the morning… guess it’s the M6 then!

Check the motorways in advance. Took me 4 hours to get home last time (instead of 75-90 minutes) because of night repair works.

Thanks for the heads up, as I always come over to Burnley that way , but on Google maps it’s just showing a shortish detour around the problem , never taken that before when there’s been a closure as anyone else?

There are a few shortish detours, but they tend not to officially sign them - probably because of the commercial traffic, which can be heavy on there.

The likely detour will take you up the hill just after the reservoir then through Ilkley and another village or two. Probably no great impact on distance but does slow progress around along that stretch as average speed will drop off a cliff (scuse the pun).

This one turns right not left off the A59 at the crossroads before you go down the steep dip and up the other side. You don’t go through any towns or villages just country lanes for what looks like five or six miles before you rejoin the A59’.

Probably Hardisty/Greenhow, past Stump Cross Caverns. There are smaller roads that do it in less distance but can get interesting if you meet anything substantial coming towards you.
