Kick off after a goal.

Post by karatekid » Sat Feb 10, 2024 8:42 pm

Just wondering why after a team scores the opposition get the kick off from the centre spot handing the advantage to them. It’s almost like you are penalised for scoring. Why doesn’t the scoring side kick off?
I know it has always been this way but just wondering how they originally came up with this.

The only thing I can think of is that the scoring side have put the ball out of play by scoring.

It doesn't seem to have been much of an advantage to us this season.

We've had enough practise re-starting the game.

Is it an advantage though?

We've kicked off 50 times after conceding a goal this season, doesn't seem to have helped us much :-(

I’m not talking about us in particular. Just in general.

If this was the case Man City would have 99% possession

I presume it was based on sportsmanship and fairness.

To give the opposition a chance to come back into the game.

Originally (as there was no netting) after a goal was scored it was a race to retrieve the ball with the first person to jump on it getting to restart the game for their team anywhere from within their own half of the pitch.

In the mid 19th centaury Montague Bertie (Earl of Abingdon) didn't think the rush for the ball was gentlemanly enough so he suggested the goalkeeper who let in the goal should be responsible for retrieving the ball and restarting the game.

Over time there were some tweaks before it was settled that the restart should be from the centre of the pitch with both teams all back on their own side of the pitch

Don't let the law makers see this, I'm sure they'll have some hair brained scheme to add 'excitement' to the game.

Maybe one player getting the use of an invisibility cloak for ten seconds after conceding.

Nice info. In my time the rules were that after a goal was scored the possesson of the ball went to the conceding side, sometimes to the frustration of the scorers if they were still behind. Don't know if that's still the case but there's always a scrap over the ball.

VAR is checking who jumped on the ball first…

To be consistent, the kick off should be taken by the opposition of who last touched the ball, like in throw ins or goalkicks / corners…

So if it was an own goal or the keeper got a touch before crossing the line, the team who scored be taking the kickoff.

Christ, we'd need VAR to see who kicks off.

Just checked and it's covered under "Right To The Ball When A Goal Is Scored". Possession goes to the goalie and his team, who take it back to the centre spot (without intentional delay, for which they could be sanctioned). The scoring team may be sanctioned if they cause confrontation by tussling for the ball. Just like the good old days!
