Thanks for that BurnleyBob. That game holds special memories for me because it was the first football game I ever watched and couldn’t believe it was ‘our Burnley’ where we went shopping. I’ve been a claret ever since.

Alan, who was a little bit older than me, took supporting Burnley to a level I could never have reached. He played a game for our reserves in the Central League.

Well I'm guessing it was well before the advent of the M6/M1!

I think there was one very small stretch of the M1 that we used. The only part of the M6 open then was what was called Preston bypass.

Only remember this because I was once car sick on Bolton Town Hall steps in the very early hours. Getting thru Bristol was a complete nightmare ! The good old days eh ! Think it used to take about 14 hours Burnley to Newquay

I suspect so and I always seem to recall going through Newcastle-under-Lyme as well.

Even when part of the M6 was built, a trip to the south west always took you past Molineux.

My brother went by train from Accrington, I think. Set off around midnight getting into London 6/7am and the return journey leaving London around midnight and getting back in Accrington around 6/7am. I was 14. Travelled down by car with Dad, Uncle (driving) and cousin. We stopped at Lichfield for dinner on the way down. Mum and Auntie travelled by train. We all stayed at the Cumberland, Marble Arch Friday and Saturday nights and went to Petticoat Lane on Sunday morning before driving back home.

Thing was that third goal by Bobby Smith, immediately in front of us, was a tough one to take, but the Burnley players took it with grace and humility.

Fast forward some seven months and wer'e drawn against them again in the Third Round of the FA Cup at White Hart Lane and we simply blow them away 3-0 in the snow, Connelly, Harris & Lochhead....the difference being this time they couldn't take defeat and acted like petulant losers......We showed our class that day, and Adam Blacklaw showed them he was not to be messed with.

Listened to the final - my first - on the radio. I was nearly 9.

When we went back to school on the Monday, we played football in the playground. One lad said, "We'll be Spurs". I said, "We'll be Burnley".

Played each day at breaks.

Then it rained...we played a tournament with an old penny as your player and a sixpence for the ball. We lined up to say what team we were. One lade wrote it down, for the draw to be made. He looked up when it was my turn and said, "You'll be Burnley".

I have been since that moment.

Watched the game on television with my dad and 2 older brothers, all supporting Spurs. As a 6 year old I had to be different and chose Burnley.Once a claret, always a Claret.

Okay. I was a season ticket holder though only 9/10 throughout it. Easter Sunday my cousins came to our house where they got their annual Easter eggs off my mum. The eldest was 13 and my mum said to him she thought he was too old for an Easter egg. His head dropped but rose again pretty quickly when she said he could have my cup final ticket instead. Gutted.

Trust me it was not the best experience.

But the best part for for me was that we accepted defeat in the appropriate manner.

Tottenham, however, seven months later, did not do that.......Harry Potts would not have accepted that.
