Craving a dirty kebab

Post by ŽižkovClaret » Wed Feb 14, 2024 6:29 pm

They just don't do them the same over here, not to mention the lack of a good artery clogging garlic sauce.

Can't decide between a large mixed from either Sumbuls or Planet Pizza

Be a while til i can get one but loody hell i'd smash one just now.

Tulsi kebabs best in Burnley, not had one that comes close.

Chicken and Donner on a Garlic Naan with Garlic Mayo.

If you want a good kebab, that's healthy to - order from Ciao (Kenanks) - Their italian kebabs with grilled chicken are unreal

Can’t stand the donar meat in UK used to love the Donar or Gyros meat in Germany though. If you can try a German donar kebabs when in UK next there are a few shops around the UK not sure if there is 1 near Burnley though, amazing.

I knew I'd seen you somewhere before.... you were holding up that slide weren't you? ;-)

I can also add Ireland as severely lacking in the kebab stakes, and Turkish best near the turf is surely the current best kebab holder, along with Enzo's for Pizza and Shagor for Indian takeaway.

Neither of the two establishments in the OP are worth the time it takes to say their name… shocking food.

Best place in town USED to be the Tara takeaway in Rosegrove, but they stopped making fresh naan bread and started buying supermarket naans - that made their kebabs awful.

Kebab lab was quite good last time I went, and Turkish Best do a nice lamb and chicken shish.

Watching this thread eagerly as I’m always looking for a decent dirty kebab.

One in the town near us that shouldn’t be named.

Used to love the proper pork gyros in Germany, the stuff we are served in “German doner kebab” franchises is either chicken or beef.

If you want a good Gyros ... a garrison town where Squaddies live (like Una Massen or Detmold 😉) are the places to be.
When my Stepson and family were stationed over there, we went over a few times and had some crackers.

Absolutely agree with this. Kebabs from supermarkets also used to be half decent, but are now just rubbish. Who the f wants a "soft pitta"? That isn't a pitta at all. It's a bit of folded bread in the shape of a pitta.

I blame Warburtons. Their brand name is all over the crappy ones.

I'm bang in the former US zone here, but my brother in law was based in Paderborn and Spandau back in the day with 1QLR. He raves about the gyros.

Given it a google and aye looks decent that. Basically "normal" Doner, but with "red" spices like paprika, chilli etc mixed in.

If I want 'healthy' I'll eat a salad with some tofu - not that I ever have - but if I'm having a kebab, the last thing I'm interested in is whether it's 'healthy'; as with fry-ups, pork pies and chips... Their unhealthyness is half the pleasure

On a slightly different tack ... My wife and I were in Gran Canaria in 2005 on holiday and saw a flyer for "fly the tiger" Helicopter flights and thought we would give it a whirl (pardon the pun) we were picked up at the hotel along with another couple by a German chap who was part of the crew who ran the helicopter flights.
Chatting on the way to the airport, turned out they were ex German Army Helicopter pilots who had set it up the year before.
I asked where there were from back in Germany, and he said "you probably hadn't heard of a place near Dortmund called Una Massen" so I told him my wifes son was based there in the RAMC, he asked what his name was, because the German Army used to fly our RAMC paramedics about ... b*gger me he knew our Paul quite well and Paul confirmed it when we saw him next....

Small bloody world innit.

Been working on my posh kebab recently. Nice spice mix from Amazon then I mix mince beef and lamb from the butchers.

Mould it into a brick shape or a bread tin and oven cook it. Then just slice off - it’s bloody fantastic

Best kebab I had was in Holland I don’t even think it was even an official kebab more like a Turkish bread crumb thing and chips. Never had anything as good since. Any ideas what it was? Think it was lamb in some sort of bread coating bit like a pitta bread.

lebanese style shawarmas from arabian nights at the bottom of great horton road in bradford. ironically a persian restaurant.

alas, long gone and replaced with a series of generic crappy pitholes that do everything and everything badly.

it's difficult these days to get a good kebab. they are mostly served with lettuce that is not conducive to heat; it literally turns to slime.

they should be served in a fresh pitta (never a naan) with shredded cabbage, shredded carrot, finely chopped raw onion, a quartered tomato, tzatziki and some chili sauce.

Salva (St James St by McDonalds) do good job of replicating a proper German Donner Kebab. Well worth giving them a try.

I too was there in paderborn, and can confirm your BiL is dead right. There was a place in the town centre called “Bolton 5” (paders is twinned with Bolton) that served up the best gyros EVER!

Amazes me how anyone eats that donner stuff it looks rancid.

Imagine being offered the choice of a grilled chicken breast or proper lamb pieces and thinking that elephant leg spinning round dripping in gunk looks better.

Most of the slop that gets served up as donner has never seen premium cuts of meat. Anything can & does taste good when you've had a skinful.

Aye, but for me, Lamb needs to be minced and spiced, like koftas, good doner etc. Its too fatty as a meat otherwise.

Amazes me how anyone eats that donner stuff it looks rancid...
But the correct way to eat a Donner kebab is in the early hours of the morning when it's dark and you're ******; at which point the kebab's visual appearance and indeed hygiene are, by a long way, of secondary importance.🤣
