Time to hear from Chairman Pace

Post by FCBurnley » Sat Feb 17, 2024 8:39 pm

All over the press and TV last season and happy to take the deserved plaudits. But now he has become invisible. The fans need to hear his thoughts and his plans. We also need to have some feedback on what our finances will look like next season. Not looking for him to say he will fire or keep VK just an update about the health of our club. He can sell up and walk away but the fans will be Clarets till they die. They deserve a pep talk at the very least because his Manager looks down and disillusioned to me.

Off the pitch we’re doing very well - corporate sponsorship, investment and dining is going very well, the ground has been developed and the electronic advertising has already paid for itself.

As for the fans - Football, food and crowd control is - well let’s say it’s very poor

We need investment in both areas and they’ve got the balance badly wrong

Why hear from the chairman when they can wheel out Matt Williams instead?

I've never really bought into the whole media blitz carried out by Pace et al. I found the documentary series oddly unengaging, coming across more as a semi-scripted faux-reality TV show at times.
I doubt Pace has a great deal of interest to say about the current situation. His background is PR/finance.

The wheels may well come off the business model if we don't bounce back quickly after relegation. It will be then that the full problems that come with leveraging debt to buy a football club will become obvious.
Despite improving income from other areas and attracting further investment, losing the income that results from being in the Premier League is a huge blow. The catastrophic nature of this season will also negatively impact the value of a lot of the young players.

The Championship has a number of "big" clubs who have been there for some time.
The likes of Portsmouth, Derby, Bolton, Reading, Wigan and Bradford also prove that it is easy to drop down the leagues and remain there, especially following questionable owners/investors.

The Jimmy Mac hospitality lounge yesterday cost £170 for a padded seat and some “street” food completely overpriced , Burnley will be lucky to get half that next season.

what is it, 4 or 5 of ALK have moved their entire family over to the UK haven't they ? That doesn't smack of an ultra short term view in any way shape or form

Pace and Hunt are the only ones I am aware of - I do not know if Checketts is still over here full time, after his role in London for the CoLDS - the others visit reasonably often

I genuinely think Pace wants the club to do well and he is a football fan as per his time following Barcelona when he was in Spain, I also think he has turned into a Claret, however he is blinkered by VK and his scouting business making massive profits for the club and subsequently the investors.

He isn’t stupid .. he is a businessman and he will be wondering like all us fans what has happened ! ..He won’t want to give up just yet but I think he won’t be as generous with his money next season and probably scrutinise all transfers ..I can’t see VK recovering from this season and think it’s only a matter of time

It's not his money though, it his his reputation as an astute financier and businessman that is on the line now.

As someone said earlier, all you need to know is in the Chairman's programme notes.
Well, it might not be all that you need to know but, quite rightly, it's all you'll get.

No you don't. But you get post match 'entertainment' and announcements from the host - the first of which drowns any conversation you might want to have & the second are completely inaudible owing to the noise and awful PA system. Oh, and don't forget staff members coming round trying to rinse you for scratchcards.

For the opposite approach it's interesting to follow Andy Holt (Stanley owner) on twitter.

He's very open and it's interesting to read but I'm not sure whether airing all that he does is positive for the club or not.

They’re very lucky to have him. He comes across really well in interviews and has shed loads of experience in running a club that ALK won’t have.

some of us are football fans, its hard enough watching the team every week without advanced mathematics and economics degree being a requirements for a modern supporter, but that's what it's come to.
Not content with criticising formations and selections, we must now be adept at accountancy to qualify as a true Claret.

It's been pointed out several times that he normally does an article in the programme, which I know will be quite well spun, but so would any other interview.

I'd be interested what people have heard from other chairmen at this level, which makes them think ours should be doing similar

This is the exact reason he won’t be doing any interviews - whatever he says, people will interpret it negatively, spin it in different ways, complain about what he didn’t say as well as what he did.

Which is the same reason other chairmen don’t do mid season interviews and often any interviews at all. Pace should be no different at all.

Sadly, most the time this is exactly why people demand to hear from him. The nonsense that gets repeated on here following the Mission to Burnley makes me wish they weren't doing another one.

Don't think anyone really wants to hear specially from him tbh.

For those who are unhappy there's nothing he's realistically going to say to change anything and for those who are happy there's nothing he's realistically going to say that they won't feel the need to defend for hours on the messageboard.

Not having a go at all Eddie, I just find it curious that from someone who if I recall correctly usually posts left-of-centre views on political threads, you're all for a Wall Street executive who leveraged a buyout of a football club which is a community asset, and has been staggeringly opaque about cashflow, the ownership structure, and accounts therein, being entitled to say naff all to the fans & local community of said club besides controlled curated programme notes.
Just seems inconsistent to me. This is the exact sort of aloof corporate "it's his business to run how he wants" stuff I'd have thought you'd dislike.

I’ve been a socialist and left wing all my life too.
But to a large extent I am able to separate what is happening in football from politics.

I dislike intensely what has happened to football and the Premier League especially.
I dislike the inequality between the EPL and the rest of the leagues.
I hate the greed of EPL clubs, owners, players, managers etc.
I hate the complete disregard for supporters that Sky and the EPL billions have brought.

But I am grateful that Burnley managed to hold out as long as we did and consistently over achieve against all reasonable odds. We may have now succumbed to how virtually every other club is ran and owned but it was pretty inevitable and completely outside of our control as fans.

I loved last season so I’m grateful for that.
I’ve absolutely hated this season but it’s made me realise even more that it’s just part of the way football has gone. I can’t get that bothered about it anymore - I see other clubs in our vicinity and think we have had a much better 10 or 15 years than any of them and if it all turns to ratshit then I’ll just watch more local amateur football and play golf.

It’s all good - well it isn’t…..but you know what I mean !!

I'm not a fan of the way football has gone in recent years. All about the money etc. But if we have to accept that's the way football has gone, then within that I don't see it as a bad thing that the chairman wants to make money and be successful as for that to happen the club has to be equally successful. I remain proud of our constant overachieving as a club and as others have said it was probably inevitable that eventually we would be sold to a foreign investor. Thankfully it's an investor that is keen to see us improve on and off the pitch. It could all come tumbling down if, at the point they do come to sell up, they do so irresponsibly with little thought for the future of the club. I'd like to think they wouldn't want their hard work to come undone. But there is always a risk in changing ownership, regardless of whether that's foreign owners selling up or owners from far closer to home.

Absolutely, Big Vinny, my thoughts exactly.
Couple that with the frenzy of criticism aimed at most aspects of the club on and off the field which I think is becoming increasingly repetitive, pointless and tedious and I too am at the point that, yes, I care deeply about how we go on on match days - as I have since 1967 -
and the long term future of the club but I'm not obsessing over it.

What I'm not interested in is endless speculation about whether Pace and/or our backers will do this, that or the other and their motives, ulterior or otherwise, because that's all it is, speculation.
I put it down to having acquired a sense of perspective over the years, I suppose I could be wrong...
Hit the nail on the head regarding my politics though,

Fantastic post & spot on, football is highs & lows, support the team through thick & thin. I know we all have opinions around Burnley FC but to be quite honest I have been ashamed by some of the comments I have seen on here & other social media from attacking the board, players & coaching staff from individuals who most likely can’t fasten their own shoe laces & wear slip on’s, there are also the ones who think they have a better grasp of players & tactics than our coaching staff & the ones who blart about finances without a clue & likely to struggle with a paper round. We do have some good logical posters who raise good points & supply decent knowledge around fiancés etc & are a great read. I’ve read several times about the players showing no leadership & lack bottle, my opinion is that it’s about time posters & fans show some of the leadership & bottle & not follow other clubs leads on self entitlement now they have a keyboard. You only have to look at the clubs who got rid of managers etc & the trouble that leads to. We stuck with another manager through a relegation & look how that turned out. That’s my opinion & we all have one.😄

I know this board can be cathartic for some but that’s a step too far.
