Jay Rodtiguez
Jay Rodtiguez
I've been saying it all season but today it was absolutely evident, if we play 2 up front he should be playing every week.
His direct competition is Amdouni for the number 10 role and Jay offers so much more. I didnt see him lose a header from a long ball today, his link play is a step above Amdouni, especially from long balls, hes constantly talking and leading and he is a goal threat, whilst also offering us an extra defensive presence from set pieces.
Im sick of the ageism from both the manager and the fans on here that weve seen this season. Our best technical players that have proved it at the highest level are Jack Cork and Jay Rodriguez, the rest is just potential who so far have proven themself as not good enough.
Both should be starting every week, and if they cant last the full 90 the young 'talent' could then be utilised as impact subs.

Re: Jay Rodtiguez
I think Jay Rod was a class above last season until he was injured but he's 34 and this is the PL.
For me Cork is the one who should have more minutes under his belt - we sadly miss his leadership and presence.

Fair, cant argue with that. Barnes was a fighter but lacked real ability, Rodriguez has both, hes technically a tremendous player which people persistently underestimate.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Sat Feb 17, 2024 11:52 pmNo doubt but someone with leadership and fight was Barnes.
Im not sure Barnes really would have offered us much anymore at this level,
Re: Jay Rodtiguez
Rodriguez wasn’t good enough for the Premier League two seasons ago, but is still probably a better option than our Swiss Houdini.

We are also a much better team when Johan plays to, he doesn’t have that yard of pace on the right anymore but with assignon up and down the right, Johan is vital
Re: Jay Rodtiguez
Exactly, he was the top scorer in the championship until he had a spell out. I dont know why but theres a weird consensus that this injury is one that suddenly made him not good enough, its a nonsense. Hes exactly the same player he was when he got injured, he just hasnt had the opportunities since.ClaretPete001 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 17, 2024 11:55 pmI think Jay Rod was a class above last season until he was injured but he's 34 and this is the PL.

Re: Jay Rodtiguez
Yes he was. He was a real threat once he got himself in the starting up. Just off the top kf my head, he put one on a plate for Weghost at West ham, scored v unite and scored v Everton all in the last few months of the season.
He isnt a 20 goal a season striker and never has been, hes a technically very good link player who works his ******** off on and off the ball.
I genuinely think he has been completed underestimated by a) the fans, because hes homegrown and b) the manager because of his age.

Agree Barnes playing wise wouldn’t have offered much but think being around the team would have helped. Can you imagine his reaction to the ‘effort’ of some today!?

I'd start him ahead of Amdouni at the moment. Purely for a bit of presence, experience, 100% effort. It's a damning indictment of how bad we've been but that's where we are.

Re: Jay Rodtiguez
I didn't, ive been his biggest advocate all season. Also one thing i didnt mention was his awareness of the need to turn Arsenal and try to use the pace of Fofana. It might not have paid off but it made life more uncomfortable for Arsenal, we played exactly into their hands for the rest of the game. Just play in behimd them and get up the pitch sometimes, it's not rocket science.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 6:16 pmWhen he was starting games, everyone wanted him replaced!

Re: Jay Rodtiguez
We are a side that spends most of the time on the back-foot. To score goals we need to be very quick indeed in the PL at counter-attacking.Its something we are shocking at. My footballing friends who know I support Burnley tell me how laborious we are when attacking.Cries for Rodriguez and JBG to be regular starters make us even more ponderous. They have been great servants for the club but like Westwood, Lowton and several others will be lucky next year to find a club in the Championship

Re: Jay Rodtiguez
For the ones arguing for Barnes, can you remember when he was the first name on the team sheet under Dyche, whilst offering nothing? Sure he was running around a lot, yes he was putting it about (and getting booked), but he was shockingly bad but kept getting picked by a manager who could teach Kompany about how to not drop under-performing players.
Talk about rose coloured glasses.

Yet we seem to play better with JBG. His vision and passing has been the best of any player this season. He is top on chances created with 30. It isn't his fault the players aren't finishing them off. If they had put half of those in people would be saying he should be the first name on the sheet.warksclaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 7:14 pmWe are a side that spends most of the time on the back-foot. Re: Jay Rodtiguez
I feel there's a general disconnect between this team and the Burnley fans - once Cork and Jay are gone this summer, and possibly Taylor though I'd hope we are trying to sort a new contract, it will pretty much leave JBG and Brownhill from the "old guard". What worried me Saturday was, O'Shea, Fofana and Jay when he came on aside, nobody seemed to want to "play for the shirt".
The one thing we have got used to is 100% effort - I question some of this starting line up on that front when the going is tough, I really do.

I was 1 of those who said Jay shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting lineup. But you could tell he was as ****** as the rest of us on Saturday. You could tell it means something. He has what we are sadly lacking.
Re: Jay Rodtiguez
This is why i'm getting more and more annoyed with Odobert. When we get him 1 v 1 with a full back hes really good and always a threat. The rest of the game hes an absolute passenger, and it's getting worse not better. We can't really drop him because he's our biggest attacking threat, so he will continue to get away with it.Luppy wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2024 9:08 amI feel there's a general disconnect between this team and the Burnley fans - once Cork and Jay are gone this summer, and possibly Taylor though I'd hope we are trying to sort a new contract, it will pretty much leave JBG and Brownhill from the "old guard". He’s now a low-end Championship player and shouldn’t be anywhere near a Premier League squad.
Showing a bit of passion doesn’t make him any better as a player.

Re: Jay Rodtiguez
When Jay was in the team pre Xmas I actually thought these performances as a team were the best we had this season. He got the best out of those around him and defended from the front. Useful for defending set pieces also. So I think there's argument to say that in a front two Jay should partner one of Foster/Fofana/Amdouni.
Re: Jay Rodtiguez
Exactly this! If you listen to the latest Ben Foster podcast, Jay himself talks about the importance put on the strikers in stopping the ball coming through the middle into the central midfielders. Who's more likely to be disciplined enough to stop that consistently, Rodriguez or Amdouni?
I think hes a number 10 and always has been so the competition for me should be Amdouni/Rodriguez partnering Foster/Fofana.
How often have we seen Foster partnering Rodriguez, im not sure ita happened once this season which is madness.

As evident here on Arsenal's first goal.
Just 4 minutes in and the lad who's meant to be playing #10/second striker is just jogging back despite Martin Odegaard making himself available at the edge of the box.
Really can't be arsed with Amdouni.

He had 15 minutes at the start of the match against Liverpool, then went missing.
Obviously talented but mentality and willingness to throw himself into a game is absolutely miles off it. Just not a player for the PL at all.

It’s not a good thing that Rodriguez starting games for us is a serious suggestion. But before Foster’s injury I was hoping to see a front two of Foster and Fofana. Now Foster is injured I would like to see Rodriguez and Fofana.
