I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Crocodile Dundee, the ultimate feel good movie. Another Aussie favourites - and another not suitable for the homophobes - is Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
No mention for the Magnificent Seven or The Great Escape either.

If you were expecting a comedy then it’s not a surprise that you were left disappointed.

Incidentally, I think Schindler’s List is probably also my favourite movie of all time.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (the 70s one, although the remake with Denzel is actually quite good)
North by Northwest
Diabolique (1955, not the remake)
Marathon Man (is it safe?)
Out of Sight (should have won best picture)
The Princess Bride
Inside Man (that man Denzel again)
Training Day (there’s a theme here…)
The Frighteners

If you want to turn your brain off and be thoroughly entertained, I always go to Legally Blonde or Mission:Impossible 4.

If you want to try something different, Tenebre or The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Italian ‘horror’ from the 70s/80s but more like Hitchcock with boobs and blood).

Here's a few I've seen in recent months.

In the Heat of the Night: you can feel the heat and racial hatred of the Deep South. All the cast were excellent but Rod Steiger topped for me and deserved his Oscar

Mississippi Burning: Same place, same theme. KKK v Civil Rights' workers. Based on a true story, it's controversial but superb cinema with a brilliant cast led by Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe.

Mystic River: One of Clint Eastwood's best films as director. Murder mystery/ Superb cast led by Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon.

Great suggestions here, two that haven't been mentioned and are two classics (my opinion)

Cool Hand Luke - Newman should have won the Oscar.
Casablanca - all time Bogart classic.
