I’m not sure the logic of giving him a few games in to next season works; by this point he’s shaped a summer of recruitment and decided tactically what we wants us to be again next season. It’d be a big risk to get rid at this point and expect someone else to come in and turn it around.

I don’t know what the answer is, but the complacency setting in is a hard thing to get rid of as a club, particularly when it’ll be expected to be largely the same base of players for next season.

Nobody should learning from their mistakes once a year.
He should be learning and adapting every single week, not looking back in May and thinking maybe I should have dropped Trafford in November or realising the squad was too young and inexperienced to compete.

There's no two ways about it, he's messed this season up beyond belief and I have to admire those with the patience to give him another go next season.

For me it's a massive risk given his performance this year.

We all want the best for the club but react in different ways. From anger to sarcasm to petulance to resignation to huge indifference to eternal optimism but I honestly believe that 99% of all Burnley fans would have been happy for him to try and lead us in the Championship if we hadn't gone down in such a pathetic manner where every game has the feel of a cup tie and we're at least one league below the opposition.

Go

To think he can win back these players, adapt and then develop some pragmatism, is deluded.

He's needed results in the last 5 and look what happened there

But it is entirely based on what he achieved last season in the division we are going to be playing in.

I take your point to some degree, but a lot depends on circumstances at any particular club. VK was appointed in fairly chaotic times at the Turf, given that he won promotion at the first attempt in that division is no small achievement.
Basing his managerial abilities at this level on one season is harsh, we aren't one of the wealthiest clubs, and he can't conjure up talent to match the divisions better teams . Yes there has been money spent, but ultimately its a lottery for numerous managers. That's why many clarets fans want him to continue.
Managers adapt to what they have available. VK simply hasn’t. He doesn’t look like he’s learning and his post-match pressers are full of bullshit.

Definitely a NO. Two weeks of Gary O Neil or Rob Edwards , both relatively new to the PL and we would be getting a tune out of this team, and some sweat on their backs, and maybe even recording a shot

STAY. Then GO after 10 games next season if things don’t improve. Yesterday was bad he can’t be blamed for Traffords erratic decision making( i know he keeps picking him) Time for Trafford to have time on the bench

Not many but then again they haven't had the sort of loans like THB & maatsen & Nathan tella. If we are using that as a yardstick let's tell the full story.
Well if you want the actual full story other managers in the championship have had the benefit of Maatsen and THB on loan and they weren’t exactly big clubs either.

And for whatever reason nobody - until VK did - wanted to take a chance on taking Tella on loan which might be because he failed to break into a Southampton side which had been flirting with relegation season after season.

Clearly we are having a terrible season but not sure why that means some fans now want to try and unpick last year as lucky or as one poster completely lied about this morning that it was the most expensive side ever assembled in the championship (conveniently forgetting we had to sell £80m worth of players before spending the £30m we did and cut our wage bill by more than £50m too)

I’m pretty certain that person was wrong about our title winning side being the most expensive side assembled in the Championship. Leeds United have a striker who cost approx £25m alone. But the amount of money we brought in from sales doesn’t relate to the amount that the squad cost to assemble.

In theory he should be sacked. In practice his relationship with the board and the club’s parlours financial state will save him.

It’s fine saying “give him until November” but after this summers business are we risking giving VK another summer window and X amount of money?

Last summer we signed a number of players who have made zero contribution - Churlinov, Bastien, Twine, CJ as well as this summer being a shambles, I’m not sure I want another VK summer to be honest.

We knew we were going up by March at the very latest so had 6 months before the season started to get it right and failed spectacularly.

Of course by definition it does not - but that’s not the point when posters are using this in the context they are.
The net spend is completely relevant - if you lose all of your best players like we did then unless you are going to play the academy kids then of course the manager is going to get some of this to spend.

It was not an expensive team to assemble because it was paid for (and then some) by the sale of players.

If you had to sell your house for £200k and you then bought your new house for £50k that would not be described as assembling an expensive property portfolio !!

There’s no point making comparisons with selling a house because it doesn’t need to be so complicated. If the squad that won promotion cost, say £50m to assemble, it doesn’t really make a difference whether it was funded by player sales. That squad should have an advantage over a squad that was assembled for £20m. I don’t know exactly how the cost of our squad compared to our rivals last season but it’s probably fair to say we had one of the most expensive squads in the division.

On houses though, if you sold a house for £1.5m and bought a house for £1m your house would still be more expensive than your friend’s, who bought their house for £300k.

It’s relevant because you have lost all your best players then you are replacing a lot of the squad at the same time.

How do you compare that to a team who have assembled their squad over many years ?
If a team bought player 5 years ago for £5m and he was playing in the championship last year but he’s on a decent salary (like Pukki and Gibson for Norwich for example) then that is part of the cost of assembling their squad.

We were bringing in players for £3m or £4m and paying them low wages…..and it was all money that we brought in from selling players and reducing the wage bill.

The cost of many of the other teams squads have to be looked at over a number of years in both transfer fees and wages. Ours was a much more condensed period for a big bulk of the team for the reasons we all know.

Exactly

Not rocket science is it? Relatively was still pretty expensive vs the rest of the Champ - was well put together though - no doubt about that.

You’re over-complicating it and muddying the waters, it’s quite simple. If someone is claiming that we have assembled the most expensive squad in the Championship then this obviously relates to the transfer fees spent to purchase said squad. The fact that we sold players to fund that spending has absolutely no relevance to the cost of that squad.

Personally I think it’s very relevant in a debate about “buying the league” that you have reduced your wage bill by £50m plus and have brought in £80m in sales and spent only £30m of it.
And not sure why it’s not relevant to talk about previous years for other teams just because our spend had to be condensed into a short period.
If Man City got relegated and did not spend one penny on new players they would still have assembled the most expensive team in the championship.

But happy to agree to disagree as don’t want to ruin the thread.

Cheers.

Yes, your Man City point is completely right and is exactly the point I’m making. They would have by far the most expensive squad in the division so would have an advantage over every other team.

But in the same vein the Sheffield United team last year cost more than a £100m to assemble.
The Norwich team cost how much to assemble ?
Even Blackburn had a player in their team who was more expensive than any one of the players we bought in the first summer.
West Brom, Watford, Boro etc all spent plenty of money assembling their teams over a few years.

I know. I haven’t disputed that and acknowledged that we didn’t have the most expensive squad ever in the Championship. I even offered Leeds United as an example as a single one of their players cost £25m.

We didn’t even have the most expensive squad last season - let alone in history.

I say stay but,

this season has been awful. spend £50m rather than that £100m and keep last years team - we'd be doing a lot better. Yes they bought potential, but you have to stay up or you lose the good players like odobert, koleosho and end up with expensive flops like Ramsey, tresor who nobody will want to take on.
Also, will last seasons core such as Benson, Music, Roberts, Cullen, Zaroury want to do it again when they know what will happen and how they've been treated.

His flops will still be waiting to click around Christmas time no doubt.

This season has been disastrous. But after last season I imagine most other championship clubs would still swap their manager for him.

Stay. For now. See how next season starts.

Stay ...

1) We're down, accept it, don't waste the money ...

2) We have a talented young squad, most of whom signed because of VK ... if we go up from the Championship next year, then they'll be 18 months older, stronger and more experienced

Stay - this season is over for sure and it’s been bitterly disappointing. Next season we need a manager who can win us the championship and we have one. The players we have now will walk it in the championship, I’m actually looking forward to seeing our young players develop, hopefully we can keep most of them for another year or two.
