Stan Bowles RIP

Post by ClaretTony » Sat Feb 24, 2024 7:59 pm

A player who got you off your feet in that QPR team of the 1970s. He had dementia but sad to see him pass away at 75.

Playing alongside the likes of Gerry Francis and Dave Thomas, they were a great team. Always thought at the time he was a flamboyant Cockley lad, but born in Manchester I think.
RIP Stan Bowles.

A quite superb midfielder .... with the current Billiard Table pitches and protection from Referees, he'd have made a fortune in the modern game ... as would Jimmy McIlroy, Rodney Marsh and many others ...

Great player and a true maverick, something he paid a heavy price for under several managers. As others have said that QPR team was unbelievably talented. RIP

Used to see him regular at Belle Vue dog track. He was asked to do an after dinner speak one time and I remember him being slated for being drunk but it turned out it was the start of his problems with Alzheimer's.A true character and star player from a great era of football RIP

Absolute diamond of a footballer. Mesmerising at times . Born in Collyhurst, North Manchester only a short distance from where I lived in Lower Crumpsall in the 1960's. Both areas were dumps but his talent with a ball at his feet served to get him away. RIP the mercurial Stan Bowles.

One of those players you'd happily pay to watch. Wonderfull skills, a bit of devilment about him and an ordinary bloke with faults like many of us. Alzheimers took hold some years ago. Sad news RIP Stan.

A true charismatic character of the game. Part of a well remembered legendary QPR team of the 70s. RIP Stan.

RIP Stan.
Wonderful MFers in the 70s. We had Dobo but there were Stan, Tony Currie and Alan Hudson, all outstanding and under-capped.

Very sad news. We knew he was ill but seemed to go quickly.

Loveable rogue who frequented many a hostelry and bookmaker's but I don't think anybody disliked him.

He loved playing football and made us happy.

Thank you Stan and may your soul rest in peace.

Loved watching Stan.
When I lived in London in Shepherds Bush, I used to go and watch Stan at QPR and Glen Hoddle at Spurs. Two of the most skilful players I've ever seen.

I think that you’ll find that he was a striker.

Occasionally, but his strike rate was 1 in 4 over his career, so I would say an attacking midfielder ... He did wear the no.10 shirt at QPR, but that was because nobody else wanted it, as they didn't want to be compared to the previous wearer, Rodney Marsh. Stan had no such issues ... 8-)

I'd never class Stan as a striker. Not that he couldn't score goals, but his best work was deeper, more of a playmaker.

Stan also responsible for one of the great football quotes, when Tommy Doherty took over at Loftus Road in the late 1970's, Doherty made him train with the reserves after some misdemeanor ...." but don't worry Stan, you can trust me ! "

" I'd rather trust my f***ing chickens with Colonel Sanders ! "

This morning I stumbled across this absolutely fascinating
interview with Stan. If you've got the time, make an effort
to watch it.

A complicated character, who knew his own mind and just
went for it with a bit of guidance in his early years.

RIP Stan and thank you.
