No Nay Never...

Post by burnley007 » Fri Mar 01, 2024 9:46 am

Does anyone have the full words to this written down?

My son wants it.

Cheers.

I went to an ale house I used to frequent,
I saw Kenny b@stard his money was spent,
He asked me to play, I answered him 'NAY!'
Said 'Rubbish like yours I can beat any day'.

And it's No, Nay Never, No nay never no more, til we play b@stard Rovers, No never no more.

Ewoods now empty, it's getting knocked down, they play their games on a piece of waste ground,
Jack Walker on the touchline says something's not right
There's far more players than supporters in sight.

And it's No, Nay Never, No nay never no more, til we play B@stard Rovers, No never no more.

A couple of years later, and we rule reign supreme,
The league and the cup have been won by our team, b@stards went bankrupt and long since have died, and Jack Walker sweeps upon Burnley's Longside.

And it's No, Nay Never, No nay never no more, til we play b@stard Rovers, No never no more.

'Will not till'.
It's even written incorrectly on the ceiling beams in the Royal Dyche.

It has always been 'til' to me.

However, here's the original lyrics

And it's no, nay, never
No, nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover
No never no more

That said the context of the song is different to the original - Burnley fans have not been a 'wild Rover for many a year' and we wont 'play the wild rover no more' - because we are not wild rovers....

It's not a hopeful ditty about how Rovers recover from going bust, having ewood knocked down and their benefactor sweeping up for us, like some sort of footballing Lazarus and we are singing until we meet again; we are revelling in their demise and singing that we will never play them again.

That's because you grew up in an era where Rovers were on top.

The original song was to mock Rovers being in the division below and not playing us.
We we play Blackburn Rovers? No never, no more.

When we were 2 divisions below, the words changed to till we play them.

I suppose there's something to that. But I've never noticed fans chanting, 'Will we play?' but I've never listened out for it.

That said, when I was really little, I thought the lyrics were

"I answered him Nay
That Peter Schmiechel, I can beat any day"

Why I thought these were the words, I have no idea.

Silly argument but....

The song’s been sung since long before Kenny Dalglish and Jack Walker.

So technically there are no "right" words. Maybe it's time to replace Jack with Mrs Rao.

As others have said, I understand it used to be will, then changed to 'til when we weren't doing so well. I quite like the 'til version as it's a bit tongue in cheek these days with us being well and truly on top :D

Goes back well before Walker we used to sing about the manager at the time sweeping the Longside.

It was always 'Kenny *******' to me, but I think it depends on if the name fits... like 'Souness *******'. I remember it from Kenny Dalgleish's days, but I presumed since then the Kenny ******* name just became generic 'Blackburn Rovers man.'

Do we ever get to Ewood is empty a bit these days?

Its weird how the chant evolves, but I never really noticed.

We use to sing
Come to Ewood ,come to Ewood ,it’s a place of misery
There’s a sign above the turnstile advertising VD
Don’t believe ,don’t believe it ,it’s all a pack of lies
If it wasn’t for Blackburn Rovers it would be a paradise.
We didn’t call them Bastards in the 60’s can’t remember when that strarted.

No nay never, no nay never no more, 'til we play..

Makes no sense whatsoever.

Always been 'will', always will be.

Think you have this almost spot on, however I believe where you have VD it was welcome unto thee.

I always wondered why Blackburn sing a version of the same song. The traditional Wild Rover , Irish folk song urges people not to be a Rover as it leads to a life of misery etc. Blackburn fans sing a song that is telling you not to be a Rover.

And then claiming they had it first.

The clue is in the lyrics, as you say.

My son sings Basket Rovers. As he's only 7, I've not corrected him.

I thought the first verse is;
When I was a young lad my dad said to me
A Blackburn bstrd son you'll never be,
I brought you to Turf Moor to watch Claret and Blue,
This my son is what you must always do,
And it's no nay never, no nay never no more,
Will we play bstrd rovers, no nay never no more.

This has to be the definitive answer, it is your song after all 😉

When I first started singing it I am pretty sure the penniless manager I saw in the ale house was Gordon Lee.

The first year I remember this is 1974, so that would be right.

It was my lad's first season last season and he thought it was 'will we play Bastien Roberts'.

Which has changed this season to "will we play Benson Muric".
