Silly yellow cards

Post by Poulton-le-Claret » Sun Mar 10, 2024 4:24 pm

My biggest gripe from today is the amount of silly yellow cards we picked up.

Some of them are completely stupid and unnecessary e.g., for kicking the ball away. Delcroix was the prime example, comes on as sub, conceded a throw in and then ran off with the ball to get a yellow card. Completely stupid and puts himself under pressure immediately. He wasn't alone though, just one of a few equally stupid yellows.

It's the modern game, apparently.

No intelligence. No discipline.

See Assignon feigning a head injury and giving his opponent a free shot at goal as a result. Pathetic ill-disciplined mob and it doesn’t reflect well on the management.

Strange player is Assignon. Looks ok one minute then does something mad the next.

Yeah really bizarre decision and his yellow card was completely stupid as well.

The best defensively organised teams, however robust, have good disciplinary records because they know how to defend properly. Under Dyche everyone thought we were a dirty team but we generally had exemplary disciplinary records because we were bloody good at all aspects of defending.

On another day Assignon gets a red. His yellow was ridiculous, for kicking the ball two yards away, then he followed it up with feigning injuries and giving the ref and linesman verbals.

Kompany knew how to mix it as a player too, remember?

He no doubt actively encourages it.

I don't get him either, obviously has an amount of ability but tries his best not to show it. Seems more interested in falling over and moaning. I'm genuinely not bothered in the summer when he goes back

That Assignon one where he feigned a facial injury was embarrassing and had I had been the manager he would have been hooked at that point. Agree with Delcroix too.

We are so ill-disciplined it’s unreal. It could be tolerated if we were half decent, but we aren’t.

If you remember how Kompany and Bellamy played , they weren't exactly the best with discipline . I remember when Kompany should of gone after about 10 minutes against us .

I actually think Dyche and his coaching staff would improve our current crop of defenders 100%, so basically it`s up to Kompany and Co to up their management game and make/organise/discipline our current players better than what we are witnessing as I think the players are good enough if they receive the coaching.

Kompany didnt play in the era where kicking the ball away or giving the ref verbals was an auto booking i.e. from this season.

I might think Kompany makes a lot of strange decisions but encouraging his players to get booked or actively try to get sent off is most likely not in his tactics book yet.

I thought both the Delcroix and Assignon bookings were harsh, especially the Delcroix one.
The Berge one was the correct decision to take the card couldnt let Bowen get away in that position.

In the 1st half we won a throw in near the halfway line down our right.
Ward-Prowse claiming the throw was West Ham's then took a throw in to one of his colleagues, preventing us from taking a quick throw.

The ref took no action against him at all apart from blowing his whistle and indicating it was a Burnley throw.
However he was very quick to get the yellow card out in the 2nd half to book a couple of our players for similar incidents.

I do agree that we are picking up these silly bookings regularly and it needs to stop before it ends with someone being sent off needlessly.
Surely our players do know the rules?

The BErge booking was very clever play by Bowen because, although he was in front of Berge, he had hold of Berge's shirt and actually pulled Berge off balance so that he would then fall on Bowen. It was yet again another manufactured foul which has become very commonplace in the modern game.

We have all these highly paid coaches sat fiddling with their laptops yet we make so many basic/schoolboy errors that even a Sunday league team would be ashamed of. Doesn't reflect well on Kompany and the coaching staff at all.

I’ve always felt that a lot of yellow cards given in the second half wouldn’t have/ were not given in the first half, especially depending on the state of a game. If a home team is chasing the game, referees seem to want to please the home fans and book an away player for time wasting. A real lack of consistency.

VK needs to get a grip with the stupid yellows. I can see why players take one for the team by stopping an opponent in a dangerous position, however we are giving away non sensical ones like O Shea last week heading a ball out of a throwers hands and the two today, and has to be said countless others this season

As others have said, there is a culture of ill discipline that runs through the first team these days. The manager needs to get a grip on the situation but I suspect it’s too far gone now.

As pathetic as the antics were today though, nothing will beat O’Shea heading the ball out of a players hands after 30 seconds last weekend.

I don't know, we seem to have long since adopted the Man City tactic of deliberate fouls whenever there's chance of a breakaway (aka The Rodri). Unlike City we never get away with it or, as with Berge today, we don't even manage to bring the player down while accruing the booking.

Yeah that yellow card last week in the first minute was dreadful. I would say schoolboy, but I doubt you'd see schoolboys doing that.

Rotational fouling (a la Citeh) is different to ‘go out and kick the ball after the whistle is gone, so you get booked’, which is what was being suggested.
