League One

Post by Fretters » Tue Mar 12, 2024 10:24 pm

Lincoln followed up a very impressive 5-1 win at high flying Barnsley at the weekend with a 6-0 win tonight against Cambridge. Their fans must be buzzing.

Bolton also had a big win, 5-0 against Oxford.

Makes you think - as painful as this season is - we've been at the same level as all of Lincoln, Barnsley, Cambridge, Bolton and Oxford in recent times and they'd all swap places with us right now.

For balance in recent times we’ve also been at a higher level than Man City, West Ham, Brighton, Wolves, Newcastle, Fulham, Bournemouth, Palace, Brentford, Forest and Luton ;)

Of course they would, just as at one point or another we’ve looked up the tables at them in envy. All have them have looked light years ahead of us in the not too distant past.

As likely as not, we'll be competing with Bolton again
next term.

And possibly Stevenage as well.

I cannot think of any time in the last 40 or 50 years when we have been in a higher division than Man City or West Ham. All the others I agree with.

League one is a fantastically competitive league and has been for a number of years. There's some big hitters in there and yet I'm still surprised it's taken Pompey so long rise to the top and they at last look certain for automatic promotion. The rest is a proper bun fight.

Quite right, my mistake, I thought we were above West Ham for a season when we got promoted under Coyle and Man City for a season around '99 but appears not.

But the kind of games you don't need to be honest.

Nothing like the derby factor to upset the formbook.

Going by that logic I hope we have some derby games very early next season because our form of 3 wins in 28 games needs upsetting.

We were unbeaten against Blackburn, Blackpool, Preston and Wigan last season. And won home and away against Huddersfield who aren't too far away.

Last time we were a division higher than Manchester City was in 1965/66 and it was 1957/58 with West Ham

When you look at clubs like Bolton, Portsmouth, Derby, all of who played in the Premier League for several seasons before doom struck. You soon realise how difficult it is for clubs to return to the top level.
Charting The Clarets fortunes Since the war we've only been out of the top 40 clubs for a decade in the past 80 years. A great achievement by any clubs standards.

Can’t easily get to there ground by public transport but assume there is parking near the ground.

Oxford were in Division one… Billy Hamilton left us to play for them, making a front two of Hamilton and Aldrich. Lincoln beat us at a walk 3-0 At Sincil Bank when our keeper sweeper (Joe Neenan?) flew out to deal with a through ball completely missed his kick and ended up in a lump on his arse as their striker walked the ball in. Cambridge under Beck were far and away the best team in the fourth division as we fought for our lives.

I was at the Bolton game last night and that Oxford team were terrible. We were talking between ourselves on the way home about how that Bolton team would struggle in the championship though.

I regularly look at the teams in the lowest two leagues and think back to a time when we had to genuinely worried about clubs of that stature turning us over regularly. The last thirty years really have been a different world for Burnley fans; not expecting to win our big Lancashire derbies against Bury and Rochdale or our roses clashes against Scarborough and Halifax Town… was not that long ago ‘the norm’.

Typical Stevenage performance of late, need to score when on top but 3 goals in 5 games shows the issue.

See my above post re Lincoln. Mid eighties Lincoln spent a couple of seasons where they finished above us and even in the league above us.

Came across the results from this day in 1986 earlier (we lost 3-1 to Swindon) , the following Tuesday Rochdale 1-0 Burnley 2,597. Steve Taylor scored the only goal from the penalty spot.

Never forget us losing to Rochdale with our own goalkeeper playing a blinder , on loan for them.

I’m not sure come to think of it. I do remember a proper feisty FAC cup game on the Turf against them which ended up with them finishing with 9, think Monington was sent off too.

Bob Taylor got all 5 for Gillingham. Then the Goater show for City the next home match on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. February 1999. Over quarter of a century ago 😲

Lincoln leading Bristol Rovers 3-0 at half time, that's 19 goals in their past 6 games and they are right on the cusp of the play offs at the moment.

Whereas Stevenage have scored 3 goals in 6 games, taken 9 points from the last 10 games. It's all gone horribly wrong!
