Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
The retake of the quick throw in when the Brentford substitute wasn’t even ready really summed him up.
He missed an absolute stonewall penalty and red card too, but was saved by VAR.

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
Awful performance - how he couldn’t see that it was a penalty, when it was right in front of him, I haven’t a clue. Useless throughout.

And he missed a second stonewall penalty and red card when Fofana was rugby tackled at the end of the first half.

Difficult to see how he could have missed giving that penalty from open play.

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
This ref was absolutely awful. Missed everything and just blew up every time they went down, let them go down far far to easy.
It’s meant to be an uncontested drop ball in the 1st Half.
The pen was a joke, took far to long, no doubt having to be told what to give/do.

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
Following Clinton Morrison and Mike Dean on Sky and they had no problem with the Referee
Apparently all communications with VAR were lost at the time of red card and penalty and that was why it took a long time for VAR to check it. ( they check all possible penalties and red card decisions)

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
He probably did but VAR check everything and VAR was lost for a period
Giving 4x 3 is ridiculous as players get minimum of 3 out of 10
Equals 30 out of 100
Referees get some decisions right in the 100 minutes played as players do
All about opinions of course

Great win whatever

For 25 minutes in the first half he invented an entirely new sport - non contact football.

Dreadful. He was terrible. Incinsistent and how he could not award that penalty in real time is astounding.

To not award the penalty and leave it to VAR is utterly bizarre. It's absolutely obvious!! Why would Vitihno go down there when he's clearly going to tap in??? That set the tone for a truly weird performance unfortunately!!!

He was hopeless and a complete wimp. He couldn’t wait to blow for Brentford free kicks and was poor with use of the advantage rule. Fofana turned his man in centre circle and was trying to run clear. His shirt was being pulled and then he was chopped down. The ball fell to a Burnley player under pressure and the ball was lost. He should’ve brought play back for a free kick to Burnley.
Alongside most refs this season we got few of the 50/50 decisions and I feel he was trying to level things up a bit after the penalty against Brentford.

I can't understand how he, or the lineswoman, missed such an obvious penalty. Poor IMHO.
And what was the farcical wait for the monitor to come on all about? I thought at one stage this was not going to work and we would end up without being awarded a clear penalty.

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
He got to the right conclusion in the end on the pen and sending off. Also got the disallowed goal right which was a big decision as well.
I always feel when I watch him that he can be pressured. Brentford played on that today and Toney got away with two of three before his booking at the end. Had he booked him earlier he would have been off.
Not sure either side were that enamoured with him.

For a so called elite, Prem League ref, to not see it was a clear penalty is mystifying. Inept doesn’t even begin to describe his performance. Shocking, absolutely shocking.

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
A back pass has to be played by the foot. The keeper can pick it up if it comes off the shin, knee or thigh. In this case it came off the Bees player’s knee.

The first knee pass back I’ve seen since John Pender at a pre season friendly away at Blackpool when the ruling came in!ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 11:16 pmA back pass has to be played by the foot. Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
I thought that but, when the supporters went mad, the commentators were saying they didn't know the rule as he was allowed to pick it up. They didn't explain why though.aggi wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 11:08 pmI think they're often instructed not to flag for that kind of thing now. Rightly or wrongly, if you're going to have the linesman make the decision you may as well wait for var.
Was it my imagination or was there a completely blatant back pass that the keeper picked up towards the end of the second half?

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
The pass back was with the knee/thigh so not an offence. It was quite brave though as VAR wouldn’t have been able to intervene and I don’t think I would have trusted the on-field refs to call it correctly.

He had a golden opportunity to “level things up” especially Fofana’s rugby tackle in the box. If anything Brentford felt they were hard done by with one or two (correct ) decisions that happened in our box to the extent that Frank had to physically restrain one of his players from attacking the referee after the final whistle.
Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
Ah, that will be it then. Thought it came off his foot.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 11:16 pmA back pass has to be played by the foot. The keeper can pick it up if it comes off the shin, knee or thigh. In this case it came off the Bees player’s knee.

He must have reffed that with his eyes closed. Absolutely woeful.
At one point Burnley were in posession when he stopped the game for a Brentford player with a sore foot. Then gave Brentford the ball to restart without making the 'injured' player leave the pitch.

But that's how things get missed - and we've had a few of those.
If only we had officials who were allowed to officiate. Yes, there'll be mistakes from them next season in the Champs, but it'll still be great to have all the decisions made immediately, on-field.

He's a shocking ref.
The home crowd shouldn't be baying for the refs blood when they are 2nil up. But they were, such was his performance.

Re: RATE THE REF - Darren Bond v Brentford
That's my assessment of it too. If a "linesman" were to effectively over-rule the referee (by making an on--field decision), it would still have to be looked at by VAR, and VAR might then reverse the decision which would be a bit embarrassing all round.
Of course, it was quite blatant yesterday, and it's quite possible that she advised the referee that it was (from her position) a penalty and red card, but I wouldn't expect to see a flag for that nowadays. (Rightly or wrongly)
