Greatest World XI to have played in the Premier League at Turf Moor

Post by jdrobbo » Sun Mar 17, 2024 10:11 am

RULES

Have to have played in the Premier League against Burnley.

Have to have played at Turf Moor

Doesn’t matter how long they played for or if they played well.

Best XI’s are based on career performances rather than a superb game against Burnley.

Ie Even though he’s never really played that well afainst Burnley, you can include CHRISTIANO RONALDO because he played 20+ minutes against us in our 1-1 draw two years ago.

Good luck!

Hazard would have to be in for his performance at TM alone.

Di Maria? Really? I know he made his PL debut at Turf Moor, but “greatest”? I think not.

It is based on career performance, I would say he's done very well overall. He did a lot of the heavy lifting in Argentina's world cup win!

Hazard was another great shout, shame he has completely gone to pot since leaving Chelsea!

Gone for a slightly different approach - top performances against the Clarets at the Turf in the PL

-----------Ederson
Moses--Kompany-Gabriel-Digne
------------Kante
-------Gerrard---Fabregas
-Aubameyang-Kane-Pulisic

*Hazard & Son narrowly miss out.

Because he is not even the best Welsh left winger to come here, let alone the best left winger.

Only four players were deemed truly world-class by Sir Alex Ferguson during his tenure as Manchester United manager.
Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Paul Scholes were singled out by the managerial great.

He was world class, no debate on that.

I think it is possibly because his image off the pitch has tainted memories of the talented player he was. Superb player in his day no doubt about it.

Nobody finding a place for Vandyck? I know he's not the Rolls Royce he once was, but crikey, he was head and shoulders above anyone else in his team and that was an absolutely brilliant team.

At the time, Giggs was electric running down the wing. He stood out with his assists and some goals.
But he only got 13 and 11 prem goals once, the rest he didn't make double figures.

Today, all the players are as fast as he was and the wide players score far more goals.

He never had the chance to shine at international level. Although he certainly never carried Wales like Bale did.

Did Giggs stand out in the cup finals he played in?

Just a bit strange to say a world class player was sublime that day, when they got walloped off a relegated club.

Would all be great if you ignored his 13 Premier Leagues, 4 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 2 Champions' Leagues, 1 Super Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 FIFA Club World Cup, 2 time PFA player of the year, 6 times in the PFA team of the year, PFA Player's player and the fact he has scored a goal in 21 consecutive Premier League seasons. I'm not saying he is the greatest of all time, but you don't win or do so much not being one of the best to do it.

Giggs was a very good player, part of a very good team.

To get in to one of these best elevens or world class elevens, you have to play and be influential at the very top.

You could say Giggs was a better Premier league player than Bale, but Bale stood out in champions league finals and winning them on his own. He carried his poor international team quite far into competitions.

So for this particular thread. I reckon Bale wins hands down.

He scored a couple for Everton when we played them in 2014/15. There was one in front of the Cricket Field end which was a cracker if memory serves.

Total memory blank that he went to Everton! I only had his stint at Chelsea in my head and was fairly sure he didn't represent Chelsea against us (but I could be wrong again about that) :D

Should be based on their ability at the time when they played against us. CR was a different player on his return to England.

I remember Giggs, at 38 or whatever age he was, still being lightyears ahead of our players when he appeared at the turf even though we did run out 1-0 winners.

The one I always think of as having an incredible game against us was N'Golo Kante. He ran the game, kept taking possession from us and set up a goal as I recall. Unbelievable player.

Surely you would have to add Peter Schmeichel to that list. He was world class and for a number of seasons one of, if not, the best keepers in the world.

Aubameyang did nothing after Arsenal but when he played against us (hat-trick) he would have to be up there with anyone else I’ve seen play against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Giggs, I may be wrong, came off the bench against us when we won 1-0. He was only on the pitch 20/30 minutes or so but it was like a knife through butter the way he carried the ball through our team. He was an exceptional player.

I’ve looked this up and Giggs started, apologies! Possibly thinking of Scholes. Either way, Giggs was great.

Re: Greatest World XI to have played in the Premier League at Turf Moor

Fully understand the rules of the thread, but we should never forget that two of the greatest centre-forwards in the history of football played against us on the Turf in European Cup games........Raymond Kopa (Reims) and Uwe Seeler (Hamburg).

Would Jimmy Greaves not be in that conversation?

Just a bit strange to say a world class player was sublime that day, when they got walloped off a relegated club.
Are you suggesting a player can’t play well and lose the game? A meaningless game at that.

I'm saying if a world class midfielder played at his best then a relegated side shouldn't get bear them them.

Do you think Real Madrid fans will be raving about Bellingham's performance if he scores against a relegated side and they get beat 4-2?

No, they will say he should have done more.

-----------------Cech
Ivanovich VK VVD Evra
--------Modric de Bruyne
C. Ronaldo-----------------Di Maria
-----------Zlatan Suarez

My opening bid! Wasn't 100% sure Zlatan played? If not, Aguero
Zlatan never played at Turf Moor
