It’s for inclusivity purposes which I would say is a fairly meaningful reason, although no doubt others will disagree. I can’t really understand why something like this would upset or annoy anyone. If the concept of an award for the best player in a match was to be invented today it wouldn’t be called ‘man of the match’ would it?!
not upset, just think it's silly.

here's an idea:

men's footy - man of the match
women's footy - woman of the match
boy's footy - man of the match (got to big those lads up)
girl's footy - girl of the match
transgender footy - you choose

A few fans in the crowd needing some ManSize tissues :o

2 players on loan at Sunderland last season score for Coventry and Manchester United in FA Cup Semi Finals.

It has enabled the same terminology to be used across all age and gender groups, like I’ve explained. So an 8 year old girl who is awarded player of the match for her local youth team, in her mind, can treat that with the same gravitas as Messi winning player of the match in the World Cup final. I’d say that is more important than the feelings of strange people who get annoyed or upset by something as harmless as this.

you can't say how things have improved because you're talking nonsense.

here's a thought: sometimes in the quest for inclusivity and equality decisions are taken that are counter productive and completely arbitrary.

man of the match for me and linesmen as well.

So we should never change anything in case some people get annoyed? Struggling to see what is counter productive about changing the term ‘man of the match’ to ‘player of the match’. It’s v odd to me that this annoys or upsets anyone.

Edit - as for linesman. We had a female assistant referee yesterday. Why should she be referred to as a man? To prevent you from being annoyed?

Surely, a young girl should be inspired by top players in the women’s game? With all of the money being poured into women’s football and the extensive free to air TV coverage that should provide sufficient inspiration.

Man of the Match is fine. There’s only men on the pitch. Nobody would be upset it’s just virtue signalling again.

No probs either way ,but it was so obvious that Lee Dixon was told as soon as he said MoM that he’d got it wrong and that the media has become obsessed with saying the right thing and are afraid of being criticised ,they seem to think that they’d rather annoy a few thousand people than have one person ringing in and complaining that they’re not Pc.

Yes, I’m awful darling.

I don’t think it’s difficult for people to distinguish between men’s and women’s football and adjust their terminology, where have I claimed that? I’m saying that a male or female player or official should not have a title which is defined by their gender. Why is their gender relevant? Why should Sian Massey-Ellis be the only lineswoman in the Premier League?

Wasn't it "Player of the match" up until 1921 when the FA tried to stop women and girls playing football?

Now we can all enjoy playing football again, let's start using the correct terminology again.

Shall we drop the Mr, Mrs, Miss and Master titles from everyday life also
I don’t think that would be necessary - although those titles serve little purpose to my knowledge and I certainly wouldn’t be annoyed or upset if I was addressed by my name without it being prefixed with Mr.

And what are the reasons not to change the terminology which are littering this thread?
I admire your persistence Rilybobs. Your arguments are solid but you might as well be whistling into the wind with the folk here.

It is important to some people though and they do have a purpose.
