Chesterfield back in the league

Post by Fretters » Sat Mar 23, 2024 5:42 pm

After the drawn-out battle between Wrexham and Notts County last season, Paul Cook's Spireites have made it look easy this season, winning promotion with five games to go. They should smash the 100 point barrier easily.

I was surprised to see WIll Grigg plays for them now. It doesn't seem long since he was 'on fire' at the Euros.

They might not be playing the mighty Stockport next season though....Stockport 2 up v MK Don's in the top of the table clash.

The locals (when we lived there, back when they played at Saltergate) invariably referred to the club as 'The Town' pronounced 'tarn'

They’ve suffered terribly since they lost to Preston in the League One Play-Off’s in 2015. Relegated twice and flirted with relegation to National League Nirth at times. A succession of absolutely horrendous managerial appointments (Saunders, Caldwell, Lester, Pemberton, Sheridan and I’m sure a few others) before bringing Cook back in who had done such a good job in his first spell.

They’ve been great this season and have a few very good players for that level (particularly Liam Mandeville, Armando Dobra, Ryan Colclough and Will Grigg). Their defence has been crap though and I reckon Cook will need to replace the entire back four to make any strides in League Two.

I’m delighted for them as I live in the town and my Wife and Father in Law are season ticket holders. Great set of fans, lovely ground these days and they’ve definitely earned a day like today after the shower they’ve had to watch predominantly prior to last season.

Have they a well funded new owner? Usually the conference needs some very decent money to ride that season out . Usually “ how much” depends if it’s a promotion challenge or a struggle in div 2 . Good to see them get back up though .

They’re owned by the Chesterfield community trust made up of fans and local businessmen. Not wealthy as such but certainly a bigger budget than the rest of that league.

Avoiding Stockport or mk dons isn't an issue. Chesterfield have a pretty decent record at mk. What they will be glad to see the back of is bogey team maidenhead - although there is still a fixture v them to play this year.

It has helped a lot that no-one else has looked very good this season. Oxford city apart, every other team is just as likely to beat a side in the playoffs one week and then lose to a relegation threatened team the next.

I’m sure we had a game called off at Chesterfield some years ago probably around late 80’s or so. I remember getting to saltergate and seeing the spire and driving straight back. Complete waste of time, I think it was around Christmas/New Year too.

They'll find some well funded clubs in League Two - how many dependent on who goes up. I listened to Gary Neville at last year's FSA AGM and he said Salford would have the fifth biggest budget in League Two behind Stockport, Wrexham, Notts County and Bradford City.

It was Boxing Day 1990...we turned back round just before Sheffield.

We got as far as Chesterfield, it was an early KO too, we saw Burnley fans driving in the opposite direction and the penny dropped. Torrential rain was the problem. Saw us win 1 - 0 at Saltergate , Peter Mumby got the winner, nearly got filled in outside down near their end. Lost 1 - 0 under Waddle, that early season run of games where we just couldn’t score.

I saw Mark Kendall keep a clean sheet for us there in 1991/2. My favourite trip was on Easter Monday 1982 for a 2-1 win on our way to the 3rd Division title.

I thought that was the case rather than a frozen pitch as someone suggested.

Didn't go to the rearranged match but went the following season when we won 2-0 with Deary & Francis getting the goals in the first 30 mins.

They did the double over us that season too. We went back in March and lost 2-1 and they were the only team to beat us on the Turf that season, winning 1-0 later in the same month.

They had a thug of a central defender by then who left John Francis (I think) with blood on his face. Not sure what happened to him but I believe he was called Sean Dyche.

Just had a look at the league table and Salford are having a really poor season. Thought they'd be play off contenders with their backing

They've improved since they changed manager. In a relegation battle until they did that.

I can't say I'd heard of Dyche at that time ;) and I don't recall any goings with Francis.

With you mentioning Francis though, was it that season when he was sent off at Hereford (L 3-0) or the following season (L2-0) ?

I went to both but I can't Determine which game it was.

Same season as the Hereford game - sent off early season when Frank Casper was still in charge. I'm not sure why I said Francis on the Dyche incident, it was Mark Kendall he did. In my report from that season, I wrote: "Kendall was left with a bloodied mouth in a late change after clashing with Dyche."

I once asked Dyche about it; he just smiled.

I remember a cup game there - mid 2000's probably... conservative estimate is that Burnley had 11,463 corners that game, but had to rely on penalties to get them through, after a nil nil draw.

I think the fans were chanting "Ooh It's a Corner" to the tune of the fabled George Oghani song.

I remember going to Chesterfield in the forerunner to the Sherpa Van in 1986 I think with Stevie2112 amongst others. We won 2-1 in front of a crowd of just 1053. Could this be the smallest attendance ever for a Burnley game (pandemic gates excluded)

An early recollection of a game against Chesterfield was in the 3rd Round FA Cup when we won 7-0.

Followed by a 9-0 win in the 4th Round......Ian Lawson scored 7 of those 16 goals, I think.

Just had a look at the league table and Salford are having a really poor season. Thought they'd be play off contenders with their backing
Salford signed Jez Davies from us in the transfer window and I told my Salford supporting mate that I thought they had got a good player. Don't think he's kicked a ball for them yet. No idea why.
