I believe this was Paul Fletcher's first goal for Burnley. I was at the match. We all thought this win was significant. We both went down.

Weird things memories...I was at the game and could have sworn that Fletcher scored with a header at the open end.

It did raise some last flickering hopes, but to no avail. Relegation duly arrived and many thought that would be the end of Burnley as a force in British football.

I was there too , and just looking through the team , with today’s advances in diet , training etc. it would hold its own today in the Prem .
Fletch had only been there six games but how on earth we contrived to go down is still beyond me .

How did we manage to go down that season?
1. Had a goalkeeper in Tony Waiters who couldnt clear his lines and threw the ball to his fullbacks putting them under undue pressure far too often
2. Lack of a proven goalscorer until too late

Now why does that sound slightly familiar!

So I was right. It was his first. Rather a good goal. I recalled it as being mishit somewhat. It sparked a fair old celebration on the Longside. POWER TO THE CLARETS! as Burnley fans moved threateningly towards the Blackpool lot. Good old days.

We caught the result on radio (she had no TV!) and were thrilled we had won due to Fletcher's first goal. The next day grandma took us to Stanley Park for a picnic and we sat on benches next to an elderly couple with what turned out to be their lanky son. We knew who it was straight away so brother and I sidled over to get his autograph and delighted in telling him we were from Burnley.......... Who was it?................. Blackpool winger Tommy Hutchison. He took it all in good part.

Ha ha - yes little did he, or the rest of us, know what would happen to Burnley post 1983-84.

Serious injuries at the beginning of that season and poor start saw confidence fall and talented youngsters were unable to edge the results needed. I always support Adamson's proclamation even though it never worked out. The performances after Easter 1972 and for a few seasons after were the best I've ever season in my time at Burnley. Despite what happened later they were still my 'Team of the Seventies!'

There was at least one title in that emerging side, had we kept it, along with a little of the experience we had.

Don't disagree with your general point, but Lochhead was long gone by then. He left for Leicester in 1968, and his career tailed off somewhat after that. Though he was quite effective in the lower divisions (at Villa and Oldham), I doubt he would have played a major role in "The Team of the 70s"
Many other young stars had been sold by 1972 though.
