Odobert

Post by helmclaret » Tue Apr 02, 2024 11:46 pm

I think we have a real player on our hands here.

Really impressed with him in that more central role tonight. For a 19 year old to put in a performance like that against good PL opposition is really promising. He's very comfortable on the ball and liked how he drove forward with it down the middle.

He was very diligent defensively in the second half too. He flits in and out a bit too much but he’s only 19 so will only get better.

He looks a top prospect to me.

I thought he was decent, but a bit slow tracking back at times.

Think VK got this horribly wrong tonight and was too worried about the opposition.

Wilson on the wing, Foster central and we win the game.

Play to our strengths

I thought that he was at times ineffective in the middle where we seemed to be overcrowded at times. He seems better imo when he is out on the left wing. Clearly very talented though and a real prospect

For someone so young, I think he has shown great potential and can cover a few positions. Would like to see him have a run in that central role.

He looked good without ever doing much.i think the game plan was to stretch Wolves so wide that it would then open up huge spaces centrally for Odobert which it did at times. He just didn't do anything with it. I'd have maybe put JBG in there at some point and moved Odobert wide.
Vk over thought it last night. Wolves were just sat back waiting to be beaten.

I also think Odobert is a good player, potentially our best.
He is far more effective on the left wing where he can use his pace and skill.
For me , he was out of position last night, played well but nothing more than other players could do.
I think we wasted an opportunity last night.

I have to agree. Odobert playing centrally, plus Foster wide and JBL narrow on the left blunted our attacking threat. Taylor saw lots of the ball on the left but doesn't have the trickery to threaten. Imagine what Odobert may have created from those positions.

Add to that Fofana having a poor game and we wasted a lot of good opportunities last night.

Why does a 28m loss suggest we have to sell Odobert, there’s plenty of players to look at selling to pull some money back before looking at Odobert

I don't like him centrally and didn't understand putting him central and Foster wide, think it mutes his attacking attributes and he should have been subbed probably to put Benson wide and Foster back central, but on the other hand in terms of workrate and doing the hard yards supporting defence and midfield that was by far the best he's played for us. Id like to see him wide left but showing that level of supportive work, that's what he's been missing there and he's more effective on the attack out wide.

Whilst I have some sympathy with this, I think its only right to note two things. Firstly, that our goal owed everything to the tactical set up. Foster playing in a sort-of Tella role plus Vitinho high on the right plus Odobert just behind dragged the Wolves back 3 across and created all the space for JBL. Secondly, against Luton we came up against a side playing exactly the same set up as Wolves and really struggled down our left. By matching Wolves man for man we tackled it a lot better last night and controlled the game, possibly at the expense of some penetration on our left.

I did think we should have changed it up earlier in the second half mind.

He deserves a mention for the goal-saving challenge near the end. For a player who has been criticised for his defensive work that was a phenomenal bit of work.

The whole reason he was finding space was because of our shape and system.

I thought we dominated a very good wolves side exactly because of the shape and system we played. We mightn’t have had enough quality to finish it off in the end but I think Kompany’s tactics were spot on.

Yep there were definite benefits to the system and it was a very interesting watch but I think 9 times out of 10 we lose that game in the Premier league. The man to man got very ragged by the second half and verged on desperation. It wasn't controlled enough imo.
The attacking side was just an issue with individuals. Taylor was the one with the space but couldn't do anything with it and Fofana was a waste of a shirt. Im not always convinced about Kompanys reading of a game from the touchline, he wasted about 15 minutes of the game with a front 3 of Rodriguez, Fofana and Foster.

I agree with your comment. We saw the lack of quality in the through balls to the forwards and of course our defending set peices - again. Everton will bombard us on Saturday having already scored a set piece goal against us this season. But we did show quality in, as you say, dominating Wolves for long spells. Berge and Cullen were very good. If only Brun Larsen ahd scored the second gaol. which he should have to add to his suerb goal we might have won this game. Muric did keep us in it though.

Taylor found acres of space but couldn’t do anything with it. The obvious move was to put Odobert there. VK didn’t see it or try it, so wasted opportunities that we can’t afford.

If you take Odobert in isolation and look at a 19 year old who started off the season as a squad player and has now matured enough to play as he did last night then you have to praise him.

I feel like I've spent all season arguing against overly positive assessments of players but Odobert is one that really has shown some signs of progress.

And yes, you could argue with VKs tactics and Odobert's ability to track back but all things considered he looks to be a fine prospect who is maturing .

I thought he ran into crowds far too often whilst central and at parts him Fofana and Foster all seemed to want to be in the same place.

I liked the idea of him driving at teams centrally though would be great to see that with Koleosho wide.

I've said all along that I think Odobert is an immense talent (IMO even more so than Luka) and our only hope of keeping him next season is if either nobody comes in (never gonna happen) or the board think a good season in the champ and following season in the prem (big gamble) makes us a huge profit the likes ofwhich we have never seen.

I think this is the issue. We’re so used to having a squad full of experienced players, it’s easy to forget that several in the current team are just kids. Some folk seem to be judging Odobert as though he’s 28 and the finished article.

If you stuck him into our team three years ago under Dyche, we’d all be raving about his potential.

Don't think Taylor was 100% fit so was the reason he wasn't beating he's man and getting the cross in, obviously with Assignon suspended we'd no other left back. I agree on fofana, should have been hooked with Benson on and foster in a more natural position.

VK has got a lot wrong this season and it’s why we will get relegated. He’s trying to deflect and blame the refs but I’d have more respect if he came out I said it’s on him and he’s made significant errors of judgement on certain players.

Yes he’s young etc but there are also young PL managers including Wolves and Luton managers that would have done better than he has with this group of players

Think that's about right and I'd be happy to see them all go for those amounts apart from Ekdal, who I'd keep if we go down, and maybe Twine. We have way too many players.

Hope we can get some of this bright-minded thinking on the board this summer. Instead of selling the good young players for profit just sell the crap ones we don't want.

I like Ekdal the only reason I listed him was if we keep o’sjea and esteve, we then have al-dakhil who is young and kompany rates highly, but then the question is Beyer, has his injury record put any club off making a move for him, I just see Ekdal being one of the ones we look to generate some cash from all be it a relatively small fee

All depends on the players too doesn’t it, summer 22 it would of been nice to keep Collins on the face of it but as soon as interest appeared it seemed clear he had no intention of staying at the club.

Hopefully the fact we won’t be starting pre season with only 8 or 9 players might give players the feeling of well if we stay around we will just have one season in champ and be back in the prem

I see Beyer as a right back and also as a dcm sitting in front of the back 4. He is just a bit too short for a modern PL cb. I think he has all the attributes for both, the above, in particular be our Rodri. If we convert him, it could save a lot of money, as we are desperately short in those roles.

Next season in the championship if Beyer stays would give us an opportunity to potentially try him in a different position but in the same breath he was comfortably the best CB in the championship last season
