How to Make Celery Sticks

Post by Rowls » Thu Apr 11, 2024 10:21 am

Recently at my local Aldi they did not stock whole celeries but they did stock "celery sticks" which are very similar but notably more expensive.

Clearly the celery sticks are popular so I thought I'd share this simple recipe for celery sticks that you can use at home. It only takes about 2 minutes (or less) and there's no cooking time.

Method
Buy a whole celery.
Wash the celery.
Cut the celery into sticks.

I know!? I couldn't believe it when I find out either but IT'S THAT SIMPLE!!!!!

Definitely. So to continue in like vein....
The shops I use tend to offer both whole bunch and sticks. As per OP, the full bunch is much better value but the sticks give you a smaller, more compact item so, whilst I usually go for the bunch, I can see why some go for sticks.

On the other hand... there's no excuse for buying ready-grated cheese.

Horses for courses, but yeah there should be both options, but the German supermarkets don't tend to do choice....

No doubt the automated cutting process adds a cost, but you already know that.

Some people are just want everything ready to go.

I agree. It's not as strongly tasting as sprouts or cabbage and has good nutritional values and a decent (slightly chewy) texture + dirt cheap if you buy it on a market.
Steam it and cover it with a curry concoction or some sauce you'd usually have on pasta.

Tried that and it still went in the bin 🤣.

A good Red Cabbage is far preferable 😁

Roasted Celery completely changes it and gives it a depth of flavour. I also use it in Soffrito when making a pasta sauce, an Italian classic

Buy a whole celery, cut off and bin the stalks and just eat the heart
with a pinch of salt.

Apparently you will consume more calories eating it than you
will derive from eating it. ;)

I feel your pain Flixton.

At risk of one-upmanship, my pain was worse because celery sticks are more expensive than whole celeries. You pay more for less with celery sticks.

But I do feel your (somewhat lesser) pain and send moderate sympathy your way.

Correct. It's only worthy of going into stock which makes the Celery Stick Thing even more egregious.

No buffet is complete these days without a pile of uneaten celery sticks at its conclusion.

Celery is great stuff a must in veg risotto (paired with carrot and other veg) and stir fries etc.
Celeriac is also a decent root veg, not up with spuds, onions, carrots or parsnips but ahead of turnips definitely.

Never been into celery soup though.

Good sliced up and stirred into mince and onions for a bit of bulk / texture
