Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
Appalling abuse directed towards Jay from a large section of the Brighton support.
Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing years ago chants calling Jay a “racist *******” were audible even in the JM Stand.
Totally and unacceptable behaviour!

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
Thought the Brigton support was well out of order today given all there complaining over the years.
There repertoire included Dirty Norther B------s - Burnley Sh1thole- Burnley always cheating- Going down etc- Jay Rodriguez cheap shots.
I do wonder if they bring some stick back upon themselves. Glad the Burnley fans did not bite,

Seeing as Brighton recorded record profits, please can they refund the Burnley fans who put money in their begging buckets years ago when they were in severe dire straits.

Meh. There's no denying Brighton fans tend towards being awful smug bastards but I reckon if one of our players made allegations like Bong's a good chunk of us would believe them no matter what the FA found.

They are a **** club with a huge chip on their shoulder. The sooner they are back in the doldrums of football with sub 2000 gates the better.

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
I don't think he was cleared - more that the case couldn't be proven. I know Jay well and was shocked at the time thinking he just couldn't do that and I had a massive row with Andy Naylor (then Brighton Argus and now Athletic) who was branding him a racist. Only Jay will know what he said and what he meant but I do think had the boot been on the other foot then the Burnley fans would have given just the same out.John Johnson 1605 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 9:45 pm

Burnley have banned this kind of chanting from Turf Moor - Good to see the club is identifying the culprits, reporting them to the police and taking control of the media narrative.

biggest irony of the lot is the majority of Brighton fans there today probably hadn't stepped foot inside any of Brighton's grounds outside of the Premier League.

If anyone had to think of a word to rhyme with Bong I think the majority would choose Pong and would probably hold their nose to emphasise it. Sad that it all blew up like it did. The things people do in the heat of the moment eh!

Was Jay being racist or not? Tony stated he didn't think he was.
I don't think anyone who thinks they know him well would say this:
Only Jay will know what he said and what he meant

I think the way the FA went about their ruling was shoddy.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 11:20 pmI don't think he was cleared - more that the case couldn't be proven. I'm not sure how inquiries like this stand on a legal basis in terms of what level of certainty (eh..beyond reasonable doubt Vs balance of probability) but they were seemingly happy to deny Jay the status of being given a 'not guilty' (equivalent) verdict.
If that's how their rules work and it's more akin to a Scottish "not proven" verdict I'll have to leave to others more in the know.
But the truly shoddy thing they did was to announce that they had no reason to doubt Bong's complaint was made in completely good faith. Of course they didn't. That wasnt the issue under investigation so why on earth would they have that information?
In choosing to announce this, without any need to do so, they left Jay out to hang. The verdict should have been implacable but one party left with an entirely unevidenced character reference.
Neither party changed their story from day one and I saw nothing in the reported evidence that warranted this partisanship in the concluding statement.
Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
Brighton fans based their prejudice on two factors. One, that the only possible reason for holding your nose is to cover up what you are saying, and no one would ever hold their nose to indicate a bad smell. Two, that it is impossible to mishear what a man with his hand over his mouth is saying in a football crowd.
I think the attitude of a lot of their fans could be summed up as "I'm glad I'm not prejudiced like Burnley fans are".

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
You aren’t making any sense! Why wouldn’t you say that if you knew him? Surely it is factual only Jay knows what he meant although I would assume there are a few people on the pitch at the time along with Jay and Bong that would have heard what he said though.
Tony said he doesn’t think Jay would have been racists but that is only an assumption based on knowing him.
Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
Not that long ago Brighton was the heroin capital of the UK. At least that's one title they managed to 'win' because they've won fcuk all else.
Smug self opinionated obnoxious gob shi-te fans with very short memories. Whenever I am unfortunate enough to be anywhere near a group of them they remind me of the Harry Enfield character Loadsamoney.
Another artificially propped up plastic club having their 2 minutes in the sun. Yes they've bought and sold very well recently but still 'owe' Bloom around 300M don't they ?
Classic media darlings, oh and that ex striker of theirs who's name escapes me but pops up on TV doing a bit of 'expert' punditry gets right on my pip. Thicker than a miners buttie.
Apart from that I don't mind them.

The Football Association announced last Friday that an Independent Regulatory Commission “determined that on the balance of probabilities the allegation was not proven” against Rodriguez, who criticised Bong for choosing “to publicly condemn” him.

Always had a dislike for Brighton since my dad decided it would be a good away trip to go to on Boxing Day in the 90’s where we got beat 3.0 and I could have spent the day on the Sega Master System.

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
I make no comment on whether the incident was racist or not, but as the extract I posted makes clear, Jay was not “cleared”, the charge was found “not proven”. A subtle distinction, but a distinction none the less.AGENT_CLARET wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 8:58 amTaken from a match report on the night "Baggies striker Rodriguez was seen pinching his nose before wafting a hand in front of his face" sorry but jokingly gesturing to a person his breath stinks is childish at best but one million percent never racism
No amount of anyone imposing their own interpretations on the incident from what they saw on TV changes that fact.
Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Bong heard it as "you're black, you stink" whereas Jay was deemed to have said "get back, you stink".
I just don't see how the first sentence would come out of jay's mouth or anyone's really, it just makes no sense to say that.

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
Like others have said, no one except Jay himself knows exactly what was said. But those that know him, know it is highly unlikely he said what was suggested.
Holier than thou Brighton fans make me laugh. A group of them were filmed on a train fairly recently singing a racist song about Crystal Palace.

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
It seems like Brighton fans are being hypocritical (imagine my shock).
They are quick to criticise Jay and us Clarets for (allegedly) not aligning with Brighton's self-proclaimed values of diversity, inclusion & their perfect egalitarian world view.
Yet, their own behaviour, specifically their chants directed at Jay/Burnley, contradicts these stated values of tolerance and acceptance.

Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
I’m sure I also heard a chant from the Brighton fans along the lines of “you only sing if it’s racist”?
I was in Bob Lord though near half way line so I could be wrong. Nothing to like about this lot yesterday.
Mind you, we have just had another thread locked from our some own which didn’t serve to do the town of Burnley any favours by implying many of us are racists because a handful of people booed yesterday.

Absolutely not condoing it but I've been amongst Burnley fans down in Brighton singing "Town full of queers".
Re: Appalling Abuse Directed at Jay.
I too sadly put money in the begging bucket for them ( early 80s ?)
Talked to a few when we played them at their ground and didn't find one I thought was OK .
Met one on holiday who came across as a good lad, hated the new fans that had come from London and switched to Brighton when premiership was achieved.
