It was, even with figures like 40 overs, 21 maidens 6 for 43.

Sad to hear.

In the early/mid 70's when I first became hooked on cricket he was one of the great bowlers I used to love to watch.

With an elegant smooth bowling action and almost unplayable on a damp wicket.

RIP 'Deadly Derek'

I had an irrational dislike for Home Counties cricketers but Underwood was class.

He changed his approach when wickets became covered. He was close on medium-pace but with incredible accuracy. Very difficult to get away. Some might laugh but I saw similarities between Underwood and Jack Simmons. They were both very difficult to hammer and a lot of batsmen gave away their wickets out of frustration.

RIP Derek
