Odobert

Post by NewClaret » Mon Apr 15, 2024 4:29 pm

I can’t find his thread, sorry, but noticed when I watched the game back that he put the cross in for JBL’s miss and then for Fofana’s. Brilliant deliveries.

Then he should’ve won us a penalty.

A couple of points here:

1. He put two of the best crosses in from the right I think we’ve seen all year. I’ve seen people say he needs to play on the left but don’t recall his delivery being that good from the left.

2. His scores seemed really low when I browsed through the ratings thread but he could’ve ended up with 3 assists with some better officiating/finishing.

I think he’s a hell of a player.

If he could back up his ability with effort, we would have a great player but he is far too lazy/uninterested

I don’t think he works as hard as Koleosho did, but I don’t notice a lack of effort. Not in the same way I did with Dwight in his latter years with us (who always tracked back by the way, just often at half pace).

Is there something specific I’m not noticing?

It’s the same with Amdouni, he’s stuck with this lazy tag whilst being our most creative player.

Slam the new young lads (to dig at VK) but give the likes of Jay Rod (who couldn’t control a simple pass) a free pass

Well, you get the 'he's one of our own' stuff but I think the majority realise Jay's limitations - and that he's not the answer to anything.

The kid is class and just 19. His talent at that age is blindingly obvious but for whatever reason he’s massively underrated compared to how Dwight was at that age by our fan base.
IMO he’s miles ahead of Dwight. Not knocking McNeil as he’s a class player and will have a good premier league career, and this may be a big shout now, but I think Odobert has as much talent as anyone and could reach the top of the game.

Odobert was a joy to watch in the first half. I thought being on the right actually made him less predictable on the left.
If we have Odobert right and Koleosho on the left next season we will be an exciting team to watch.

not sure which 'Odobert' you have been watching but ours is certainly not lazy or uninterested. He's a fantastic player with a great future, and he plays for us.

Our best passages of play tend to involve him. As others have said, he’s only 19.

Is it an Ian Moore or Liam Robinson poster you still have up on your wall?

I thought he was good first half, then the management team in their infinite wisdom swapped him and Foster over for the second half and he faded.

I like Wilson. I'll never understand why Kompany wasted weeks playing as a number 10, when without Kolo he's our main threat out wide.

He signed a million wingers and then puts his best available in a position the player was not ready for.

I think we tend to massively over rate our own players ability’s.

He looks a decent talent but to date I haven’t ever come away from a match and thought he looks a level above (like Ings/Trippier did at times in there younger years).

I suspect he will have a good premier league career but I can’t imagine he will the top of the game. The gap is just too big, the teams at the top like city/Liverpool etc… have got so good that I can’t see any of our lads getting close to there squads (like ings did).

Moreso Trippier I’d say over Ings.

At 19 though I wouldn’t be so certain Odobert won’t go to the same level or higher. I take your point on overrating players but I also think our league is underrated sometimes too. If Odobert goes to Italy or Portugal or Spain he’d be tearing it up and considered the next best thing.

Anyway… I was just happy to see some brilliant crosses from the right for a change.

What a lot of people miss with Odobert is how much room for improvement he has. He is still incredibly raw. If he can add better awareness, and a little more game IQ to his game he really is going to be a fantastic player. Unfortunately, right now he gives the ball away far too much and is wasteful in possession too often. Going forward he is our most dangerous player by a mile. With his back to goal in midfield he is a bit of a liability. He isn't a lazy player at all IMO. He does occasionally disappear and can be anonymous, but often that is the lack of service to him. Overall, he is one of our most valuable assets. If we go down, I could see someone taking a punt on him for about 20 Mill. That would probably suit all parties. We make a quick profit (roughly doubling our investment), and the player gets to stay in the Prem.

I mean there is always a chance he gets there. I just look at the level of talent around the mid table teams and think he’s got some way to go to get even above that level.

I do believe the quality in the premier league is at a high right now, teams like Villa, Newcastle, West Ham etc… have got some immense talent. Odobert will do well in his career to even start for them type of clubs.

Ings went on to score 20 league goals at a poor Southampton team and we all know what trippier went on to achieve, those comparisons are crazy. I think Odobert had all the ability to be an excellent player but one thing he doesn’t have for a winger is that burst of pace that might be his main downful

At a guess, because we could cover the left wing with JBL and WO has the ability to find shooting opportunities around the box.
Whether it's worked or not??
