Your favourite promotion?

Post by KRBFC » Thu Sep 15, 2016 4:52 pm

Out of all promotions you have seen, which is your favourite? For me the one under Coyle, probably because it was the 1st I had seen. The cup run and winning at Wembley was magical. The football wasn't bad either, of course it all went downhill quickly, that season was memorable and a proud one though.

The one out of the old 4th division was amazing and so unexpected. I also loved the play off final 1 against Stockport. If it is premier Promotions this one as we were Champions.

Another vote for '91-92 here.

Just being behind that goal when we won the title in the last minute at York remains my favourite ever Burnley moment.

09 the first i can fully remember. Everything was brilliant. Even going in town at weekends and everyone singing Owen Coyles name. I thank him for the greatest 12/18 months i'll have being a claret.

I really enjoyed 1999-2000. At the time I was working in Manchester and the majority of the people I was working with supported one of the Manchester teams. It felt good going into work on a Monday morning being proud of how my team was doing. Payts and Little were on fire that season.

Oh yes York absolutely brilliant. Carlisle was also a great day even though we only got the draw. Still the site of the thousands of Clarets from the seats in the main stand was something special.
Great memories. UTC.

2009 is up there with '92, maybe even better.

It feels blasphemous saying that, it's like admitting the 2005 Ashes were better than '81.

Been lucky enough to have seen 6. All very special in their own way.

The team of '92 certainly have cult status and rescued us from the bottom tier.

Wembley '94 was a great day but otherwise a fairly forgettable season.

Stan, Little, Payton, Wright.... 99/00 was a fantastic season, especially following the previous two.

Of the three to the Premier League; winning the league takes some beating. In 13/14 nobody gave us a chance which makes it pretty special. 2009 was probably the most entertaining in terms of the football and being the first time in 33 years makes it stand out too.

You have to consider the two Wembley wins because of the sheer excitement of winning there, and you have to consider 1991/92 because we were finally out of that bottom division in an amazing season, but, for me, there are three that come out above them.

1. 1972/73 - only four defeats all season, a small squad and a team that you knew was virtually promoted with weeks and weeks to go.
2. 2013/14 - for exactly the same reasons, albeit five defeats.
3. 2015/16 - same reasons again other than there being three teams chasing it.

To have seasons like that when you average around two points per game (would have been 86 from 42 games in 72/73 had it been three points for a win) are very special. They might have lacked the excitement of Wembley but these three promotions are superb.

1972/73 was my first promotion too so will always place that one first.

72-73 for me.
Back then I considered it our right to be in the top division, and saw relegation from it as merely a blip!

My first was the Chesterfield game - which was a special if wet and muddy night.

However, 91-92 was my favourite because of how it built up through the season, the diversion of Derby in the FA Cup and the fact our belief in the club was beginning to be justified as it started it's return to respectability

72-73 by a street. Just the sheer class of the team and the joy they gave us.
Both playoff winning seasons we barely scraped into them and the last two have been wonderful with great commitment and will but nowhere near the level of Dobos side.

All as good as each other for me. I refuse to pick a favourite so there.

Someone mentioned the 99/00 promotion, that was a cracking and unexpected end to the season.

I remember the brown underpants game against Millwall at home though. :D

1991/92 season for me too, the football, the results and the atmosphere were just amazing.

I remember many of the players, we even had a strong bench.

GK
Andy Marriott, Chris Pearce
DEF
Steve Davis,Joe Jakub,Ian Measham,Mark Monington,John Pender(c)
MID
John Deary,Steve Harper,Adrian Randall,Andy Farrell,Mark Yates
FW
Mike Conroy,Roger Eli,John Francis,Graham Lancashire,Robbie Painter

Be nice if next year, 25 years on if the players could have a reunion and be celebrated on the Turf Moor pitch, lead out by Jimmy Mullen.

91/92 was the best for me getting sealed with the last kick of the game at York was brilliant, as was the home game against Wrexham with the electric atmosphere. The longside had to be shut an hour before kick off as already full.

But all the rest since were completely unexpected apart from the last one. I can still remember at half time at the Stockport Wembley game 1-1 and their down to 9 men and I say to my mate I think we can win this now. Seems stupid now and we should of romped it but most of us went there expecting to get beat easily. They finished 16 points above us in the league or something.

Last Season by a country mile.

I really did not expect to see Burnley promoted to the Top Flight as Champions, just like they had in the year of my birth.
The Football on display was disciplined and controlled, we displayed guts and courage, strength and skill and, despite what some may argue, a fair bit of flair.

I think 1972/73 because there were no worries about coming straight back down and we had so many players approaching the peak of their careers.

We spent a pittance on Peter Noble and finished sixth in the top flight the following season.

Has to be last season for me. The football wasn't great at times but, having started supporting us in 93/93, I never thought I'd see us win the football league. It's not that long since Cotterill was walking into a squad of 9 players and we were selling the Turf. I've spent the majority of my time supporting the Clarets just being grateful to even be in the second tier.

The first few matches started off at around 6k and momentum built up and we haven't gone below the 10k average since.

It's where it all began for the modern Burnley

My 1-2-3 are exactly the same as CT's.

An honourable mention for one that hasn't been mentioned yet on this thread, 81-82. Six defeats in the first eight games, then only two in the remaining thirty eight.

Having joined a Regiment full of Leeds fans it was pretty special getting there in 72/73. The season long battle with the much fancied QPR was similar to last seasons struggle with us prevailing and as Tony said, only 4 defeats.

The downside was only getting to see 2 or 3 games whilst on leave as I was in Germany.

Every promotion is/was memorable but 1972/73 for me . Great side full of great players . The last 2 promotions are right up there given the changing face of football and everyone connected with the club deserves great credit for getting us where we are today .

2014 for me.

Touch too young to fully experience 92, and there's something about winning automatic promotion not only comfortably, but completely unexpectedly. Watching a team grow through a season is rather special.

Started following in 2001 so I've only witnessed the three to the top flight.

Winning the league was special IMO.

We were the last ever fourth division champions, did we get to keep that trophy?

So technically we still are the fourth division champions? and now we are champions of the championship, so we hold two titles

Seen all of the recent ones from 91 onwards. But think the 99/00 one was my favourite. Worked at Michelin at the time and obviously most co-workers were Burnley fans so the excitement built as the season went on.

91-92 was brilliant because it ended the nightmare of seven consecutive years in Division Four and we played everyone off the park. It was great not only to be a big fish in a small pond but also to finally have piranha teeth. But for me 1990/2000 was better because no one outside of Burnley expected it. With the exception of the last 11 games of the previous season when we were unbeaten, the previous season had been a complete shocker, with 0-5 and 0-6 home losses to Gillingham and Man City around February/March 1999 causing many of us to fear the worst. A City-supporting mate of mine asked me in August 1999 to predict how Burnley would fare in the coming season and without a moment's hesitation I said "We'll get automatic promotion". He thought I'd lost my mind. Even now it's the only time I've ever predicted a top-two finish as I'm the ultimate pessimist. But somehow I knew Stan had got the magic formula.

Above all, though, the 1999/2000 season saw Glen Little at his finest and it was a privilege to watch him. His goal against Bristol Rovers at the Turf remains the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I'd pay a hell of a lot of money to relive that moment.

Has to be 91/92 for me. Those away games at Carlisle then York where there were well over 7000 Clarets at each game was just brilliant to see and be a part of. This promotion coming after our near extinction, when up until the Orient game most of the town had given up on the team.

91-92 by a mile, nothing has come close to it for passion from the supporters imho. I can honestly say that as good as everything else has been and the special moments we've had I don't think anything has come close to the way I felt when SJF struck the winner in at York

1972/73 for me... I think your first is always special.

As someone else said I felt Burnley were bound to live in the top division.

That we had been relegated 2 seasons earlier was an injustice that had been put right and we would be in the top flight for 50 years.

The team was young and looked like it had a good 5-6 seasons in it with minimal change... Then Bob Lord started selling, Frank Casper got injured and the next crop simply weren't as good.

91/92........ending years of watching "durge".......Northampton away, Wrexham away, Carlisle away, York away to name but a few.......

And after that, in June 92......Jimmmaccer Junior was born..........

A fantastic year!

Loved them all even the old days with Brian Laws scoring v Southend.A great full back but a crap manager.2009 was specially as we took a 1-0 lead to the Madstad then played Reading off the park with Pato and Stevie Thompson's goal. But special as a Reading based Claret.Enjoyed celebrations at the end but not the game day to tense.Especially when Kalvenes booted Ward for a stonewall penalty that wasn't given

Being Champions was brilliant but I'd put it 3rd of the three promotions to the Premier League.

1) As a whole season, cup runs and ending with the play off victory, 2009 tops the list for me for excitement, some great games and goals.

2) 13/14 saw some brilliant football and a hugely deserved if unexpected promotion.

3) 15/16 there was more expectation than perhaps we are used to and despite winning the league, many of the games were not exactly crowd pleasers. As an achievement it tops the lot and we were great at grinding out results, but in terms of a spectacle and excitement, it wasn't as good as the other two.
