The Cleveland Indians

Post by ontario claret » Wed Oct 26, 2016 4:28 pm

Well, the Indians upset the Cub bandwagon last night, and, personally, I think they should be favourites in this series. But, when they came to Toronto to beat the Blue Jays, a "native activist" tried not just to stop them from wearing their Chief Wahoo patch, but to ban them from being called 'The Indians' altogether. Of course, it was all designed for maximum publicity, but, to me, to assume that 'Indians' is an offensive moniker is just wrong. The team was originally called 'The Spiders', but when their best player became one 'Chief' Bender, a native American, the nickname was changed in his honour. Besides, the term Indian itself was coined by Christopher Columbus himself in 1492. (he was a little mixed-up in his directions). And, really, has political correctness really reached to this level?

Yes it has reached this level.

Didn't a former footballer turn down an MBE recently due to his feelings over slavery??

But 'Indians' aren't slaves. In this country, they have more rights than I have. For instance, they can commercially fish at any time of the year without a licence. Trying to correct past wrongs is one of the growth industries in Canada. (It used to be 'Immigration consultant'.)

Also, in Brantford, Ontario, annually the local tribes are given a hunk of cheese and half a loaf of bread to every member. Something to do with paying homage to 'The Great White Mother'. Talk about out-of-date anachronisms.

I like the baseball. My favourite player is always the bowler because he bowls really fast and it's hard for the batsman to hit he ball for 6 runs. The wicketkeeper has a really tough job in baseball because he has to protect the wicket and the home wicket referee.

I used to work with a guy who played some serious ball as a catcher (not a wicket keeper). All of his fingers were crooked from being broken so often. They used to call catcher's gear 'The Tools of Ignorance', because you had to be stoopid to play the position, but 90% of baseball field managers are ex-catchers. You figure it out.

Game 3, it's 1-1 in the series. 0-0 top of the 7th. Indians have runners at 1st and 3rd. 1 out. Count at 0-0

The Indians just scored with a base hit. Runner out at 3rd. 1-0 to not the Cubs.

Washington Redskins having ongoing problems over pc madness.
Even though they give millions, every year, to Native American organisations.

Good time for a bump.

Always followed the Indians, you have to have a team, simply because of the Major League film.

Just won game 18 in the 4th longest streak in the history of the game. The second longest since the leagues changed, behind the Oakland A's 20 game streak, made famous in the movie Moneyball.

The stats that they've rolled up in the process have been awesome. They don't appear to have any weaknesses at all.
Hopefully this year they can go all the way and win the World Series.

On the flipside LA Dodgers, whilst being 9 games clear in the NL West, have managed to lose 10 in a row. This is taking saving it for post season to a new level!
