What's the difference between being officially linked and unofficially linked?

I see Charlie Adam has become the new Dry Powder.
I’d be delighted with Cahill. Top player.

Cahill's an international class defender and he's be a great player to bring in.
One can imagine wages would be a sticking point however.

Re: G Cahill officially linked
Cahill? Seriously? I would hope that IF this was to happen it would be as a back up player. Would be good to have him partner a young CB (Dunne maybe) in our cup games.
Re: G Cahill officially linked
This would be against the stated policy of player trading, buying younger players with sell on value and using them to replace a future big sale. If this is to replace Tarky, then it is going in the opposite direction

Good defender but wrong age for us.
Could see him signing for Sheff Utd. He supports them and they will probably require some experience.

A class player but a bit too old to make regular pl football as with crouch. They are great to have in the dressing room with their know how but i cant see any making the starting 11 every week,
Re: G Cahill officially linked
I think it would be an excellent signing should we need to bolster the ranks at CH - however, I don't think we do at the moment. But, the bloke isn't happy on Chelsea's bench so why would he be happy on Burnley's?

An official link I guess is when the club actually come out and say they are interested in bringing him to the club.

i dont think he's too old , and as long as the most of the team are younger, then with his experience it could be a very astute addition.
Its not as if we are aiming to pack the squad with over 30's players.

Would definitely take him if Tarks was to be sold.

If we offload a few of the older lads (Hart, Defour, Crouch, Bardsley), then there's room in the squad for one more experienced player. Cahill would be a good signing if Tarkowski goes.
The bulk of our business must be younger players, as Rigg has alluded to.

No per se objection to this if we need a stop gap replacement for Tarks and aren't convinced by the younger options. We'll need someone in sharpish for pre-season if Tarks does leave so they can build a partnership. Cahill's as good a man for that as any.
It would though place a greater emphasis on youth in other areas of the team.

Cahill would be quality playing in a protected back four & means another leader on the pitch.

TBH I'm not sure about this. He's 33 and we haven't had real value for money out of several of our older signings.claretspice wrote:No per se objection to this if we need a stop gap replacement for Tarks and aren't convinced by the younger options. Would he be a replacement for Tarks?
Would he be an upgrade on Kevin Long?
We are an established PL club, should we be looking at signing "stop-gaps"?

Not convinced. OK, Cahill is still a good player but by next season, Gibson will have served his twelve months apprenticeship and Dyche has never been afraid to play Kevin Long if necessary...unless there are transfers out from the central defender ranks.

Re: G Cahill officially linked
He'd be a decent enough short-term replacement if either Mee or Tarks left this summer, wages could be a problem, and we definitely don't want another Joe Hart scenario.
I'm more worried about the suggestion Crouch's contract might be renewed.

Any player that stays at Burnley is either too young to have yet shown their full potential, too old to have a Premier League future elsewhere, or simply isn't good enough to do better.
Gary Cahill, I would guess, has been unable to get in the current Chelsea side because he is basically an old school defender with limited playmaking abilities. If he has no injury worries I would think he would be good for us for three years, not only as a solid centre back but as a goalscorer too. He scored some spectacular goals at Villa:

People saying he's not good enough for us when we have shipped 65 league goals. The highest of any side not relegated.
To say we're a defensive side first it's a little bit worrying.

Let's have some balance here as that's only because of the first half of the season.Quickenthetempo wrote:People saying he's not good enough for us when we have shipped 65 league goals. The highest of any side not relegated.

Once we got everything sorted after Boxing day we are now pretty much back to our best defensively.

It's not a position we really need to recruit tbh unless as speculated somebody (maybe more) are leaving. Most here seem to think the most likely to leave is Tarks, but realistically where would he go? He's good, but he's not top 5/ Champions League good so that leaves Everton and possibly Leicester who are at present upgrades on us. Everything else is largely a sideways move imo, despite many having a better season than us this time, where we had a better season than most last time.

Fair point but Leicester could need to replace Maguire and Everton have had a good season out of Zouma and Chelsea have said they want him back, for pre-season at least.Dark Cloud wrote:It's not a position we really need to recruit tbh unless as speculated somebody (maybe more) are leaving. For mine I think he would be perfect in a back 3 but after last seasons trial I can’t see us going there again.
Re: G Cahill officially linked
Not sure about that - think there are a few teams who would be interested and have problems in the CB position. When you look round the league it’s a bit of a problem position. Just a few clubs that would blow us out of the water salary wise and have ambitions to break into top 6 or 7 include Everton, West Ham, Leicester and Palace who all need centre backs next year. You can even look at the likes of United who probably need at least 2 centre backs and Tarks could be good for them even as a 3rd choice - he’s better than Rojo and Jones. Look at Arsenal also - they are shocking in this position.Dark Cloud wrote:It's not a position we really need to recruit tbh unless as speculated somebody (maybe more) are leaving. Let's hope our recruitment team aren't as daft as you.
We signed him on having a decent half season and completely ignored the other half where he was terrible.

Yes, you can write off the first half of the season when it comes to our defence as everyone in football knows we are back to our best in that respect.Quickenthetempo wrote:You want me to forget about a full half season so it looks better?

If you were judging a neutral teams defence you would praise when they kept a clean sheet.
Re: G Cahill officially linked
I'd have thought Jagielka would move to Sheff Utd rather than Cahill
Re: G Cahill officially linked
You should also take into account the quality of the opposition. Would be good to see the variance to expected goals but xG is still to be refined and the defence itself plays a part in the xG metric.Quickenthetempo wrote:If you were judging a neutral teams defence you would praise when they kept a clean sheet.

Everyone thinks are defence is brilliant but Eddie Howe's Bournemouth can't defend for toffee. It's crazy.

He was certainly a cut above the rest when we had him on lone from Villa when he was a youngster, but signing him now I don't know unless stated above maybe one of our existing centre backs goes.

Still think there's plenty of football left in GC. He reads the game well and comes up with a few goals. Not sure if were interested or not, but if we were it could be a shrewd bit of business. My hunch is him ending up at somewhere like Fulham.

I'm not that keen on signing 33 year olds, but If Cahill is still as good as he was in his last Chelsea appearance on the Turf then I would take him all day long.

A little surprising seeing as Nixon reckons we're very keen on Reece James who has been on loan at Wigan from Chelsea and impressed massively.Spike wrote:Bardsley has already signed a one year extension -just not been announced by the club
Others are also keen and Chelsea might decide to keep if under transfer embargo.
Unless selling Lowton we must be sticking to our current options.
