Pet hates in Football

Post by Foshiznik » Thu May 09, 2019 1:10 pm

There has been far too much positivety and excitement over the last few days so we need some balance. What is your biggest peeve about the game or the authorities that run it. I'll start:-

Players stopping in mid run after a tug of the shirt, i.e reffing the game themselves as the referee almost always gives a free kick.

Modern day football fans. The ones who have a dig at half/half scarve buyers, foreigners getting tickets, ones who have a pop at modern stadiums etc etc

It’s all “Look at me I’m a proper fan”.

Teams that insist on playing a certain way regardless of the situation.

See Ajax last night for more details.

Both teams walking out together and the shaking hands ******** before every game
People over the age of about 12 asking players for their shirt on bits of cardboard
People filming parts of the match instead of just enjoying it

1. A player showing the imaginary card to the referee - they should be booked themselves, for doing that.
2. A playing rolling over 17 times, to make the challenge seem worse than it actually is.

I'm sure players waving imaginary cards at the ref was, some years ago, deemed a bookable offence, but I think they've now backed off, which I agree Frank, is a shame.

Players choosing their preferred name on the back of their shirt as opposed to what everybody calls them. Obvious offenders being Javier Hernandez (Chicarito), Dele Alli (Dele) and Alexis Sanchez (Alexis).

Pundits saying things like:-

"you've seen 'em given"
"play football the right way"

Give your opinion. Was it is a red/pen/foul? As long as football is played within the laws of the game it is still football. If we all thought the proper way was to pass sideways 100 times then lay it off to the best player to try doing something magical, the game would be extremely dull.

The West Ham song and the Liverpool song.

The Liverpool love in all ****ing day on the radio yesterday, whereas today it seems to be about how much better their comeback was than that of Spurs rather than a Spurs love in (which would have been pretty sickening too).

The FA Leagues Committee and their seeming intransigence in moving clubs from league to league without consideration for what the financial consequences are.

Lots of cheating in various forms, which seems to be getting worse (except, maybe at Brighton, who cheat less now than they used to, but that seems to be down to a change in personnel up front).

Not being able to just go to a ground and get a ticket there and then, which, I suppose comes with not being sh7t anymore, so it's sort of tolerable.

Commentators that have 'witty' quips and lines prepared for when a team or a certain individual scores. Clive Tyldsley is the grandaddy of this but he's not a patch on Peter Drury, who is absolutely insufferable for it.

Absolutely this. If I am unable to be home for the 5:30pm kick off on a saturday, I have the unfortunate experience of listening to Sam Matterface on Talksport who literally only speaks in puns and cliches.

My uncle on my dad's side, is a london born Burnley fan. No links whatsoever to the club or town. Only reason was because in the early 60s his dad and brother supported spurs and he didn't want to be the same so picked the second best team!

Actually took him to Turf Moor for his first game about 10 years ago.

Not being able to appeal a red card that was given for two yellows. Even though one of the yellow cards was so obviously wrong.

Add to that, just being able to appeal a yellow, or not taking retrospective action against a serious offence just because the referee wrongly only gave a yellow at the time.

Live TV coverage that cannot wait for an appropriate time to show a replay of something and all you hear in the background is the live crowd going nuts at something for a good five seconds or so and the camera shot cuts back to live and Burnley have a free kick 40 yards from goal.

Also when the camera cuts to a close up of someone on the run or wing or something, coz it's hollywood, and you've got no idea who's in space or anything anymore in the absent wider shot because the director wants to make the coverage action packed and sexy.

When FIFA persistently cut to a fit bird in the crowd during the World Cup coverage. I'm not a prude or owt nor do I give a monkeys about objectification, but it does get a bit creepy after a bit and makes me roll my eyes at the desperation.

Players surrounding the referee attempting to influence a decision should be banned. Only the team captain or his designate (assistant captain) should be allowed to speak to the ref.

Oh, and ‘simulation’, but that goes without saying.

The group stages format in both Euro competitions. This past week has shown how amazing and exhilarating knock-out football is.

Semi finals at Wembley.

Diving only being punished when they successfully con a match official. Why not punish all diving?

Pundits saying "he's entitled to go down".

Players who go down and grab the ball, should be booked for handball unless the ref had already blown for the free kick.

The sound of camera shutters going off being picked up by microphones behind the goal. I've heard it quite a bit this season but non more so than in the two semi's this week, every time the ball was in the box 'click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click' it does your head in when you notice it.

The phrase, "there was contact", by pundits.

What has contact, in a contact sport, got to do with anything?

If there is is deliberate force, fine.

"unplayable!" - it actually means something else

"you've got your gerrards, your rooneys, your welbecks..." There's more than one of each player?!

Players grabbing the ball when they go down. If the whistle hasn't gone, it should be a yellow card for deliberate handball.
