He's been excellent in the second half of the season. We were all relieved when he didn't get that 10th yellow card against Wolves but he's then gone and missed the last five games.

Fully deserved, he’s been very dependable when called upon. Bardsley’s spell in the time must have been frustrating for Lowton but now Lowton is back in the team he’s looking more like his usual self. Two solid right backs for us.

Thought he was gone with that performance at Wolves, but came back stronger and one of the reasons we stayed up.

Gives us another year before we need to strengthen at RB, allowing us to focus elsewhere. I’m happy with this.

I'd rather we signed Bogle. Can't see him coming in as 3rd choice, so unlikely unless we move Lowton out...

or gives us a year to bed a young player in to our defensive structures so they are ready when needed

Excellent!
If bringing Heaton back in was the U-Turn in our season, Bardsley was the indicator light.

Felipe Anderson will be disappointed. He was on course for being one of the players of the season, until he disappeared into Bardsley's back pocket at the Turf, never to be seen again.

Not a dig at Bardsley who played a massive part in our upturn in form at the start of the year but this is not good as a progressive move for the club.

RB is an obvious area where we can (and should IMO) improve the first 11. Lowton is a great back up and challenger at this level and with an aging Bardsley coming to the end of his contract it seems a natural opportunity to improve us.

If we are going to renew Bardsley's contract and stick with the two RBs we already have that's a good indication of another very conservative transfer window.

Hopefully im wrong and we push the boat out a little in the midfield and forward areas instead cos if that was the case id happily compromise on keeping the defence as it is to free up funds

Edit: If Bardsleys triggered it and its his choice and right to take another year then that's a different matter and fair enough

This is good news.

PB is great back-up if Matt Lowton is injured/suspended and this, as Chester Perry says, allows us to buy the next 'almost ready' young star.

I'm clearly in the minority but it whiffs a little of complacency to me. If we can get Bogle, we should, and he should be the long-term option, with one of Bardsley or Lowton ahead of him.

We either keep moving forward or we become the next Stoke City / West Brom etc

Interestingly, I was talking to a Derby season ticket holder recently who was amazed any Premier League club would be interested in Bogle. One person's opinion but clearly didn't rate him.

I take it there is more to anyone wanting Bogle than Nixon making a tenuous link to fill some space on his gossip page.

Going down now due to signing Bardsley. Can't wait for the window to open

yeah I saw that in your article (I do read them ! :D ) but I think we would have offered him a year anyway, huge part of why we managed to stay up

I'd agree with those who aren't convinced by this. He's a decent enough player but this seemed a decent chance to replicate what we've done with Taylor on the other flank, bring in a younger player who needs a bit of finishing off and have them around the first team for a year or so before competing for a starting place.

I guess the thinking is that Lowton is only 29 so we can maybe get another few seasons out of him so we can push this back a bit.

EDIT: Or Bardsley triggered it.

I posted the same after a few full game tv appearances. I rated Holmes, nominally a MFer, a much better RB.
Excellent news about Bardsley. He’s warranted another year. It gives us two PL RBs and frees up money for more pressing signings.

I think Lowton’s age is key. He should be coming to a sweet spot in his career(barring any injury). If, like Ward on the other side, we can get the best three years out of his career, then I’m quite happy to have the experienced Bardsley as cover.
Let’s concentrate on getting some more dynamism in our Midfield.

Am happy with this news. He’s been a very useful and reliable player for us.

Bardsley is a decent utility defender- as I recall it he can play anywhere along the back line so this means we can probably release Ward and free up his squad space.

With Taylor, Bardsley, and Brady all able to play at left-back I think we’re fine there.

wasn't the biggest fan of his, certainly earned that extension though, one of our better players and a big reason for our upturn in form.

Bardsley’s inspired performance vs Liverpool was a key element in salvaging this season. For that performance alone, he earned his contract extension. He may be on the downside of his career, and a tackle away from a red card, however he’s proved to be an important part of Dyche’s squad.

100% correct decision. Assuming we stay up we can address RB next year. If we go down Lowton would be one of the best in the championship.

Can we afford to upgrade CM RB ST all in one go? No. Focus spend on that CM spot this season.

As I understand it, this report is merely confirming the amount of games Bardsley played hit the target in his contract for an extension. That wouldn’t necessarily prevent him moving on if it’s an area Dyche looks to reshape?
I think Bardsley has been a great pro, he’s clearly in great physical shape. But the modern right back needs to be able to put a decent cross over and play on the overlap.
Taylor can do this but both Bardsley and Lowton are less good at it. Bardsley found himself in some great positions this second half of the season but rarely created a chance or hit the target with a shot. Totally agree with the value of his contribution this season mind.

No problem with this, he deserves it.
However, I would like to see us take a bit of a chance on young players with a possible sell-on value, and try to use under 21s to augment the squad.
Hopefully we won't need 5 senior goalkeepers next season, perhaps 3 will be enough.

Don't worry, we will sign a couple of 15 year old Brazilians to bring the squad age down.

Because as we know, that's very important.

I haven't seen enough of him to offer a relevant opinion, but....

When we signed Lowton and Westwood, Villa fans were queueing up to drive them here.

As far as Bardsley is concerned, I don't care who is responsible for him getting an extra year, he's earned it an its good news.

PB's had a brilliant second half to the season and thoroughly deserves a seasons extension. Certainly an outfield leader that were in short supply before Christmas.

I like Bardsley. And he was a critical part of our turnaround this season. He is what he is. An uncompromising, hard, committed defender but with limitations.

Problem is hes a year older. And dont we have VAR next season? Wont exactly the be the type of player it benefits.

If we had no option fair enough. But we have to be looking to the future.

I suppose the good thing is it lets the lunatics who thought otherwise know Trippiers an absolute no nay never
