U2 in concert at the Turf July 2020

Post by No Ney Never » Fri May 17, 2019 8:35 pm

Ok maybe not, but why don't we host any giggs at the Turf? There's good money to be made out of these events. Who would you like to see on stage there?

Remember being told some years ago (Andrew Watson I think) that it’s not possible on our ground.

Yes, from memory it had roller shutter doors on the front so you could bring them down and the idea was we’d host boxing fights and all sorts at The Turf!

Any idea why not?
Surely it can't be a safety certification issue if we're a venue able to host football with its crowds.

Think it was access issues, and i doubt the filling in of the corners has done owt to change that

Access for equipment is part of it. Didn’t get a full explanation but if it Watson would have been over 16 years ago.

aye if youre building a stage theres a lot of long single beams and frankly unless you get a big crane in theres not the angles to get it in without a right faff.

We might not like it but ewood is just down the road and a far better set up for gigs

I'm meaning the access issues that you mentioned...as in the whole setting things up electrics /sewage etc. Thought that would be harder to do than just rolling up at turf moor.

Glastonbury isnt a standing start is it? much of that will be well established now, with all the tunnels etc for cabling would be there id imagine

I'm always rather proud of the fact we've never had anything but football on the Turf.

Leave all that other stuff to the Johnny-come-latelies.

Probably not tunnelled. It'll be trunked or hung.

Personally, I think you could get a stage in at the Turf. But, it wouldn't be the quickest operation and is Turf Moor a big drawer so close to Manchester which is a better option for a stadium show.

I'd say no. The prime spot for an oldies all seated show is Blackpool imho. Not the biggest, sure, but no shortage of accommodation so you can package it up and make a fortune. They had Neil Diamond on a few years back i remember

We did once have a concert at the Turf some years ago. It was Water Prize Band but not many turned up. I thought they were very good, I heard it all from the cricket next door. :D

Then there was Chico and the Fancy Pants Dog Troupe and don’t get me started on the woman in the big balloon and the parachutist on the stand roof. :D

I know the stadium of light is a bigger stadia than the Turf, but its worth over a million quid to Sunderland each time they host a concert.
When we look at income other than that from broadcasting in our club accounts, 5 or so giggs per year could make quite a positive contribution to these figures.

Its also purpose built to host concerts as well as football, The Turf isnt

Would the Desso Grasmaster pitch cope with standing / seated / dancing people?

All sorts of noise problems being so close to residential areas even if sorted access issues etc.

Plus, as alluded above, nowhere near the logistics in terms of accommodation, parking, transport....

Travelodge. When that’s full too then I don’t know. Not sure what glamping is but it seems all the rage, could get a few tents on the cricket field.

The stage would have to be in front of the cricket field end. You could only realistically sell 2/3rds of the bob lord and longside, full jimmy mc and NO cricket field 2/3 of the pitch too. The capacity would probably be around what it is now for a match. 21/22,000.

Stadium gigs are stadium gigs because arenas can’t cater for that capacity. Old Trafford, Etihad, Wembley etc etc.

Why would a band pay alot more for the hire of a stadium that holds 21/22,000 when Manchester Arena holds almost the same?

Unless a band from Burnley become huge and want a homecoming gig it won’t ever happen

You only have to read the music magazines to realise all the big acts are desperate for a venue in Burnley to play at.

Come on board, sort it out....

If I was a successful artist I would want to play at turf moor simply because I'm from Burnley. That is the only way you would see a gig at turf moor for me.

Wasn't in the early 70s, when other clubs were hosting the Stones or the Who, that it was arranged for The Temperance Seven to play at Turf Moor:

Bingley's transport links are excellent with a less than 20 minute train journey in to Leeds and Bradford. The festival also has early finish times each day to ensure there are enough trains to get people back to a city that can support accommodating such a large influx of people.

Bono launched into one of " Geldof " homilies, at the Point in Dublin, a few years back ....

" Every time I clap my hands, a child in the world dies .. " he exclaimed, when a voice shouted back, " Well stop f*****g doing it then, y'eejit ! "
