Word on the street is that Burnley have signed Daryn Smit for at least 7 games. Has a team ever won the league using sub pros for the full season?

Don’t know that but Burnley lost pro Shafiq Ahmed (brilliant batsman) in 1978. They eventually signed Mudassar but had a lot of sub pros in between.

Just looked up that season and Burnley used

Ken Shuttleworth
Joel Garner
Geoff Trim
Neal Radford
Garth Le Roux (2 games)

Less games than I thought it was with a sub pro

Trim was from Lancs 2nds, didn’t bowl and scored 1 with the bat. Burnley chased 232 to beat East Lancs that day. Allan Border was 104no for EL. On the following day EL lost at Rawtenstall in the Worsley Cup with Border again not out on 179.

I didn't realise it was allowed.

In the Ribb league you could only get a sub pro for the first 4 games (Although it might of changed.)

A bit farcial if Burnley just plan to use sub pro's all season.

How did Neal Radford do as a league pro?

He was a good un for Worcs.

I’ve just added to that post re: East Lancs.

I saw all those games and Burnley won them all. Le Roux was a terrific player and I think was quite young at the time.

Burnley's pro went down injured on the eve off the season.

I seem to remember the house using sub pros for over half a season last year. Injuries are part off the game

Erasmus got a bad injury last season I think. Must make it very difficult for clubs in this situation.

It happens to lots of clubs. Some pro's back out at the last minute.

But clubs should do all they can to get a full time pro.

It can’t be helped, you’ll struggle to find a full time pro now easiest thing to do is field county level pros which isn’t a cheap business so I’m sure they’d rather have a settled pro

I’m sure they do but I would think it’s not always that easy as I’m sure our Lowerhouse friends on here would confirm. Even worse for them. If memory serves he got injured on the Saturday and they had a game the following day.

There's that many cricket agents these days, it's not to bad if you have the finance.

To be fair to Lowerhouse, quite a bit of the season had gone and most pro's miss the last 4 games.

I’ve no idea what Burnley’s plans are but I would have thought they’d prefer to have a regular pro than the current situation.

For anybody who can remember Lancashire league cricket as long ago as 1988 I was playing for Rishton when we signed Mohammed Azharuddin as pro for the season. He was an exceptional talent and a lovely bloke but got an injury after six or seven games and returned home.

So Rishton had the following sub pros for the rest of the season and it was brilliant playing with some of the best players in the world at that time:

Mark Greatbach
Saleem Malik
Arshad Ayub
Dean Jones
Dennis Lillee
Maninder Singh
Michael Holding
R S Ghai
Norbert Phillips
Alvin Kallicharran
Kevin Curran
Ezra Moseley
Franklyn Stephenson

Some great characters. Saleem Malik was late for every game as he was in the casinos in Manchester.

Dean Jones was then batting number three for Australia and was out cheaply so put his match fee behind the bar for the rest of the players.

Ocki was injured in the T20 on Friday night and we had a game on the Saturday.

Wouldn’t wish the sub pro situation on anybody.....not even Burnley. It’s a nightmare.

Daryn Smit is a great player and a top bloke. He’s also very fair price wise so if they can get him as often as possible then fair play!

No, the rugby season was long over by the time he was injured ....

Btw .... anyone remember Colin Kuhn, the Rhodesian who played as an amateur for Rishton during the 80's ? He also played Rugby down at Blackburn, another fly half/centre. He was about 10 years older than me, cracking bloke, used to drive for Blackburn Transport. The only time I ever saw him lost for words, was when a couple of 1st Team lads mocked up fake Rhodesian Army " Call up " papers, and got a bloke in a suit to hand-deliver them to Colin at training. He fell for it hook, line and sinker ...... brilliant wind up !! :D :D
